We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

Of course it can be stopped. Anything political can be stopped. As unicorns and rainbows morph into a political and economic wilderness it will be impossible not to.
I think we will get really close to the deadline, then the Tories will beg to stay, we will have to forfeit at least one of Rebate/ Euro opt-out/ Schengen opt-out. Which one(s)?

MsHooliesCardigan · 08/08/2017 11:49

Peregrina I agree that my DP's generation are statistical outliers. I was listening to a R4 programme a few months back called 'Is retirement over?' which spoke about the whole concept of retiring being pretty recent - for most of history, people have just worked until they dropped and the current retirement age is going up and up.
I honestly don't resent baby boomers en masse, nobody can help when they were born. It's the ones who don't acknowledge their privilege and bang on about young people all being feckless and lazy that I have an issue with.

TheElementsSong · 08/08/2017 12:00

I think this Remoaner needs to have some of what mummmy is having. Doesn't he know that all kinds of wonderful things are being carried out, by all kinds of wonderful people, behind the magic curtain?

Thing I don't understand about Brexit. Govt says we're leaving the EU, single market, free movement area etc in April 2019. 20 months away.

But if that's happening, why isn't Dover a big building site? We will need to massively increase customs capacity to check stuff in & out.
We will (at least) need to have increased border checks in Northern Ireland. So why aren't the government buying up sites along the border?

We will need new agencies up and running on April 1 2019 for air safety, maritime safety, chemicals, medicines, disease prevention etc.
So where are the buildings being built, bought or leased for these new agencies? Where are the job advertisements for these new agencies?

And so on. All the stuff that should be happening if we're leaving the EU in 2019 isn't actually happening. There are two possible reasons.
1) Our government is incompetent or 2) They don't expect us to leave the EU in 2019 cos they hope an excuse to delay/cancel will turn up.

The mystery is why all the 'Brexiteers' aren't kicking up a fuss about this. Surely they should be asking why this stuff isn't happening?

Peregrina · 08/08/2017 12:25

And expected to be followed, with 'breaking a manifesto promise' a big deal.

And even before the Fixed Term Parliament Act, with a limit as to how long a Parliament could last before a General Election was called. Hence people like e.g. Gordon Brown dithering over calling elections and then being forced to. None of this, 'we had a vote, suck it up' nonsense.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 15:24

Why didn't you all get out and be this spirited BEFORE we voted?
Had you done this we wouldn't even be talking about what is about to happen.
The horse has bolted, this is going to happen, No I don't think at the last second we will back out of this, because if the Tory's do this they will never ever be able to stand for Election every again.
Yes it will be a mess, yes it will be painful, but
YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT PEOPLE TO VOTE AGAINST IT.

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 15:28

YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT PEOPLE TO VOTE AGAINST IT.

YOUR LOT WON BY LYING.

twofingerstoEverything · 08/08/2017 15:28

Yes it will be a mess, yes it will be painful, but
YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT PEOPLE TO VOTE AGAINST IT.

Jesus wept. So it's the remainers' fault we're in this sorry mess. There's a phrase for that.

LaurieMarlow · 08/08/2017 15:48

Why didn't you all get out and be this spirited BEFORE we voted?

Actually, this is a fair point. Part of why we're here is complacency.

David Cameron took this fucking enormous political gamble because he thought he'd win. He didn't even bother with a 'what if I lose' strategy.

No one pulled their finger out to out to put together a strong remain campaign because they didn't think there was any convincing to be done.

No-one (inside or outside of the political community) seems to have taken Cameron to task on the specifics of the question being asked, or the wisdom of asking the populace such a complicated question - because they assumed they'd win.

We have all missed a huge trick. The best time to shout loudly about this was early 2016. However given that we didn't, we should be shouting all the louder now.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 15:49

Actually yes it's your own fault, completely your own fault, for not engaging in the process and making sure you dragged everyone you could to vote.
Had you done this, the Result "would have been different".

twofingerstoEverything · 08/08/2017 15:51

Actually yes it's your own fault, completely your own fault, for not engaging in the process and making sure you dragged everyone you could to vote.
Who exactly are you addressing here, mummy? Because you seem to be making some massive assumptions.

LineysRun · 08/08/2017 15:55

Oh come on, mummy is actually Nigel Farage sitting at his desk in Strasbourg wearing tight lederhosen and a cheeky feather in his trilby.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 15:58

twofingerstoEverything all the remainers could have gone out and made sure that people voted, to ensure they stayed in the EU.
Had they know how close it would be I am 100% certain that people would have done this, but they didn't, and they lost.
They can blame everyone else but the end result is that we are leaving.

LaurieMarlow · 08/08/2017 16:03

the remainers could have gone out and made sure that people voted

Well, I don't see how that's their responsibility.

However, I do think people could have questioned the terms of the referendum and the total lack of clarity in terms of what was being voted on.

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 16:05

Actually yes it's your own fault, completely your own fault, for not engaging in the process and making sure you dragged everyone you could to vote.

Not engaging in the process?! Who the bloody hell are you to say we didn't engage? I was very much engaged.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 16:05

"Oh come on, mummy is actually Nigel Farage sitting at his desk in Strasbourg wearing tight lederhosen and a cheeky feather in his trilby."

LOL.

Why because I am feed up of being picked on for saying the Truth.
When you don't use your vote, or encourage others to do the same then you leave it too the ones who do vote to decide your fate.

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 16:06

So is this the latest thing, people who voted Leave ranting and raving because those who voted Remain didn't persuade enough other people to vote Remain?

I should be surprised, but I'm not

histinyhandsarefrozen · 08/08/2017 16:07

I thought you would be pleased with the result mummy. I thought you were certain that the civil servants who used to deal with tax were now finding excellent solutions to the border issues, trade issues, citizenship issues etc, all thrown up by your leave vote? What's the problem?

LineysRun · 08/08/2017 16:09

I don't know precisely what you're 'feed up with' - but when you use expressions like 'the Truth', I know deep down inside that we won't be going on a twilight cruise together anytime soon.

But it's been entertaining.

I have some spare tinfoil if you need it, btw.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 16:11

On my part nothing, I am very pleased with how this went.
Chuffed too bits we are leaving, no matter what occurs, I really do think when EU falls apart, I will be pleased to say I was one of the people who got us out.

I am simply saying Remainers have to accept the blame for their own fate. The lack of willingness to be proactive in the proccess, means we won.

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 16:13

You won because your side told lie after lie after lie.

So yeah, this upcoming gargantuan fuck up is on you.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 16:16

And your saying you knew they lied, but kept quiet.
Oh and the stuff your side said. hmm pot kettle.
So we won.

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 16:17

Could you try and post in a clearer style?

ClamBakeSnake · 08/08/2017 16:20

And your saying you knew they lied, but kept quiet.

No one kept quiet about the lies but anyone who pointed out the lies was drowned out by idiots screeching 'Project Fear'.

Did you watch the news at all during the campaign? Read a newspaper? You don't seem to have much of a clue about what actually went on. But then, that makes you the ideal Leave voter I suppose, uninformed but willing to do as you're told like a good little turkey.

mummmy2017 · 08/08/2017 16:20

More people voted to leave, than voted to stay........
...

Enchantedflamingo · 08/08/2017 16:31

Mummy, are you on glue?
