to read on my phone in the cinema?

Just that really, taking the kids to see Captain Underpants at the cinema this afternoon and am wondering if I can read a book using the kindle app on my phone? Or will the light annoy people? I would still have it turned off so it won't ring or anything.

My youngest is only 5 so I feel he's still a bit small to sit in the cinema without an adult while I sit in the cafe in the foyer, which would have been my number one choice.

It would be totally unreasonable. Have a nap instead. I slept soundly through all 7 Harry Potter films.

One of my best friends is constantly checking his phone in cinema/theatre/opera. One day I will 'accidentally' spill my wine over it.

WeAllHaveWings · 29/07/2017 11:38

No matter how much anyone wants to delude themselves phones can be seen clearly in a dark cinema, even on low light, in a corner or up the back. Rude and selfish.

Enjoy watching the film with your kids (even if the film is crap) so you can chat about it later. It wont be long before they are going with their friends and don't want you there so its important to teach them good cinema etiquette now.

Ghjklf · 29/07/2017 11:38

Glad you've listened to everyone. What about listening to a podcast? Very quietly.

Shadow666 · 29/07/2017 11:39

I feel your pain as I had to sit through Despicable Me 3 last week. I ended up really enjoying it though. It has a great soundtrack.

If you really can't stand the boredom, how about listening to an audible book through your phone with earphones on?

I suspect your 5 year old would prefer you watch it together though.

How could anyone sleep through the Harry Potter films!!! That's incredible.

Good on you for taking the views on this thread into account and not doing this. I would make a complaint if I was at the cinema and someone was reading. I hope you have a nice time, good luck.

reuset · 29/07/2017 11:41

I'd ask you to turn it off.

WaitrosePigeon · 29/07/2017 11:43

It would annoy me. I would say something to you or tell the cinema staff.

SurferRona · 29/07/2017 11:44

Yep. Podcast. Definitely.

Yep to the annoying screen light and double yes to watch the film so you can engage with your kids afterwards. I always get "Mummy what was your favorite bit?"

WeAllHaveWings · 29/07/2017 11:47

What about listening to a podcast? Very quietly.

It would be nigh on impossible to do this. You would need to turn up to hear during the loud bits of the film, then whenever the film was quiet it would disturb the film viewers.

Just watch the film with your dc, I used to love watching ds's reactions to films, its only 2 hours.

JaneEyre70 · 29/07/2017 11:50

There is nothing more annoying at the cinema than someone using their phone. Even when dimmed. Admit defeat and watch the film!!

WeyHay · 29/07/2017 11:51

You EVEN have to ask this?

FFS I really don't know what goes through people's heads sometimes.

No. Just no.

Of course YABU

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/07/2017 11:51

My dd is 9. Doing what you don't want to do. It's the joys of parenthood and what you signed up for so yes, you would bu.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/07/2017 11:51

YABVU. It would be very selfish to do that; it's really distracting for other people.

SoPassRemarkable · 29/07/2017 11:52

Maybe ok if you're on the back row in the corner but otherwise no, too annoying for others.

PiratePanda · 29/07/2017 11:53

Our local cinema has an announcement about mobile phones that actually says something like "No, not on silent. Off. The light from your mobile is annoying too."

So yes, YWBU to read on your phone during Captain Underpants, though I too would be sorely tempted.

Girlfrommars77 · 29/07/2017 11:56

It really can't be seen if light is turned to the night light lowest level setting on an iPhone

Yes it can six. I would be pissed off and tell you to turn it off and stop spoiling the film for others.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/07/2017 11:57

I tried having a discussion wth the kids about despicable me 3 having not had to endure the earlier ones "what are all these minions about then? Where do they come from? What's the back story?"

I hope you didn't do that while the film was playing in the cinema.

teaandakitkat · 29/07/2017 11:57

I'm not going to do it.

But the reason I asked really is because in all my many trips to the cinema I have honestly never noticed anyone on their phone. I wondered if that was because it's not particularly noticeable. But I now know it is very noticeable and I must just have been very lucky to not have been in a cinema with a phone user before.

As for sleeping and not being able to supervise my kids, I'm hardly that deeply asleep.

And having a deep discussion about Captain Underpants afterwards- my favourite bit will be whatever happens in the first 15 minutes before I nod off, and I will agree that whatever bits they loved best are also hilarious and brilliant. Everyone will be happy and satisfied and loved and not neglected.

Spudlet Wink

As a Wittertainee there is no debate here. And no the OP can't listen to a podcast (not even a film related one!)

Lynnm63 · 29/07/2017 12:06

That would be so annoying op. I have very occasionally turned my phone on in my handbag for a second to check how long I have left watching a film I don't want to watch the time but anything further is wrong. In our local cinema they make you turn phones off and will ask you to leave if you don't.
