Just that really, taking the kids to see Captain Underpants at the cinema this afternoon and am wondering if I can read a book using the kindle app on my phone? Or will the light annoy people? I would still have it turned off so it won't ring or anything.

My youngest is only 5 so I feel he's still a bit small to sit in the cinema without an adult while I sit in the cafe in the foyer, which would have been my number one choice.

Same with A song of ice and fire, even though I watch GoT and love it. It benegits from all the guff being cut down.

No, it doesn't. While I love the tv show, it has missed out far too much of the plot and now they're not even following the books anymore the scriptwriting has gone massively downhill.

By not reading the books you are majorly missing out.

I think the key is just reading the reviews, listening to Wittertainment obvs, and telling your DC "No sweetie, we're not going to go and see the Pudsey Movie because it doesn't meet Mummy's quality control standards. There's a new Studio Gibli out next month and the independent cinema's Kids Club is doing Buster Keaton on Saturday, so that'll be lovely."

I have never been tempted to use my phone in the cinema with my DC because I never go to films unless I know they're going to be worth my while. The question is - does this make me a better or worse parent than someone who does give in and take their child to see the dreadful kids film they've seen advertised in McDonaldsbut then naps/texts through it? DH doesn't do films at all so my DC have the choice of films that meet my standards or stay home.

I did try, but I lost interest halfway through book 4 Grin And I've read War and Peace twice, so I know it's not my gnats attention span!

does this make me a better or worse parent

Worse, because you're not giving your children chance to like films independently from you. You're declaring them to be shit and not allowing them to watch them, even though since they are kids films after all, your kids will love them.

Part of being kids is watching kids films, especially the latest big ones in the cinema, and you are denying them that.

Riversleep · 01/08/2017 08:56

I hardly ever agree with Mark Kermode. I agree with the kids films, only see what I agree to, although I'll see any old nonsense if its on the kids £1.50 showing

bruffin · 01/08/2017 08:59

We actually like kids films and despite dc being 19 and 21 we still sometimes go.
Dh has a cineworld card and also comparethe meerkats. 2 of us can go to cinema once a week for £17 a month.
The only childrens film i really ever regretted was Yugioh.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 01/08/2017 08:59

To be fair I'm not restricting cinema visits entirely to lentil-weaving art pieces about Bhutanese eagle hunters - that was an exaggeration for comic effect. We do go and see big Hollywood animations and blockbusters.....but only the good ones. I'm delighted to spend four hours of my life taking them to see Guardians of the Galaxy - but time is precious, and I'm buggered if I'll waste it on Smurfs 2.

Riversleep · 01/08/2017 09:00

whattodo so far this summer, I've been asked if they can go to Despicable me3, cars 3, Captain Underpants, the emoji movie and countless others. They can go to a theme park for the price of that little lot. You have to be discerning, especially in the summer.

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/08/2017 09:01

Good luck with your eviction attempts though

Our cinema doesn't attempt. It does throw you out.

mrsRosaPimento · 01/08/2017 09:03

I thought captain underpants looked funny. I'd watch it. I must be really immature...Blush

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/08/2017 09:04

Our cinema is a small business and is very cheap and doesn't stand for any nonsense.

bruffin · 01/08/2017 09:04

Mine too Oliversarmy
When we went to see Hidden Figures a crowd of boys were thrown out because the had a laser pen. I got the impression they had been given a warning before we went in.

Riversleep · 01/08/2017 09:07

mrsrosa I thought it was funny. Different to what I expected, but a good story.

cambodianfoxhound · 01/08/2017 09:46

could you buy some audio books and then listen on your phone with headphones?

reuset · 01/08/2017 14:34

Ah LOTR - I think it was the Desolation of Smaug when I fell asleep as they were being chased by a dragon in a cave / mountain interior only to wake up some time later to find them still being chased by a dragon (not a fan)
Ah, The Hobbit. Utter bunkum that was. I refused to watch more after the first appalling instalment.

Shadow666 · 01/08/2017 14:51

I think kids are fine waiting for the video. We download films and watch them on the computer in bed. I mean legally downloading them on Amazon. We go to the cinema maybe once or twice a year.

AvoidingCallenetics · 01/08/2017 15:19

If cinemas don't want customers to do what they deem to be annoying shit, like play with phones, maybe they could do their bit and stop selling sweets with noisy wrappers and stinky hot dogs!

I have loved this thread though. Almost universal disapproval of using phones unless the film is LOTR, in which case, crack on Grin

WanderingStar1 · 02/08/2017 20:39

Ellie, Spudlet, Quim, mad and other wittertainees, I'm so glad to see you on hereGrin! A while back there was a thread about films and I wrote 'Hello to Jason Isaacs' and nobody responded!! I thought I was alone on MN and couldn't quite understand how that could be........Shock
