Just that really, taking the kids to see Captain Underpants at the cinema this afternoon and am wondering if I can read a book using the kindle app on my phone? Or will the light annoy people? I would still have it turned off so it won't ring or anything.

My youngest is only 5 so I feel he's still a bit small to sit in the cinema without an adult while I sit in the cafe in the foyer, which would have been my number one choice.

Took DGD to watch Despicable Me 3 last week. Woman nearby kept looking at her phone, it was annoying. DGD also noticed.

Bluerose27 · 29/07/2017 11:23

Nope it's not ok

MrsGotobed · 29/07/2017 11:24

Yep YABU as you've now realised.

Watch your DCs faces as they watch the film oblivious to you watching them IYSWIM. That can be a delight. I still remember watching DS's face as he watched his first ever 3D film at the cinema - it was priceless!!

Or just close your eyes and have a snooze providing you don't snore!

RainbowPastel · 29/07/2017 11:25

How can you sleep when you should be supervising your children?

I really can't think why you should have to ask. It is so annoying.

ophiotaurus · 29/07/2017 11:26

I hate this. So so selfish.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 29/07/2017 11:26

YABU, do it in my local cinema and you will be kicked out by the staff. Suck up crap kids films - we've all been there.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/07/2017 11:27

It is very very annoying. Glad you asked us so we could save you from yourself.

RainbowPastel · 29/07/2017 11:29

six yes it really can be seen. You are deluding yourself. I would tell you to put your phone away.

AlpacaPicnic · 29/07/2017 11:29

How about an audiobook with a really good pair of headphones?
They'd have to be pretty good to block out the film but you wouldn't annoy people with the light...

SandyDenny · 29/07/2017 11:29

Download some podcasts and listen, no need for a light

MrsGotobed · 29/07/2017 11:30

How can you sleep when you should be supervising your children?

I don't think the OP is going to be in such a deep sleep in a cinema full of children that she is going to be oblivious to her DC should they need her attention.

NormaSmuff · 29/07/2017 11:30

Can they go on their own, speaking as another who used to sleep

annandale · 29/07/2017 11:31

Why pay knicker-wetting amounts of money to read your Kindle? If you don't want to take them, don't. It's not compulsory to go to the cinema. If you go, try to be in the moment with them.

PrimalLass · 29/07/2017 11:31

Or you could maybe just watch the film with your child, interact with him, discuss it afterwards etc ...

I've sat next to people facebooking in the cinema. The glow is really irritating!

Ninjakittysmells · 29/07/2017 11:32

All those who say don't sleep - what on earths wrong with a snooze?!

Arm round child or hand on leg in a comforting manner and so you wake up if they move then close your eyes and relax! I'm not talking a full on REM cycle, but a nap does no harm surely?!

Ivory200 · 29/07/2017 11:33

I think you could get away with listening to iplayer radio or audiobook though! With headphones , and set it up before the lights go down. Captain Underpants film!!! I feel your pain, the books were enough for me Confused

troodiedoo · 29/07/2017 11:34

This is why I don't go to the cinema any more. It makes my blood boil seeing screen glare. Unless you cover yourself with a blackout curtain, you can be seen and are annoying people.

PearlyPinkNails · 29/07/2017 11:34

I would happily tell you to turn it off.

chocatoo · 29/07/2017 11:35

Sometimes kids films are actually quite fun - I always think that's the reward for taking them!

bigbluebus · 29/07/2017 11:35

You could also try watching the film and then having a conversation about it with your child afterwards. Imagine that!
