DH has asked that I ask if I am BU in thinking that just cos I love coffee and it's my birthday in 2 weeks that coffee maker is suitable birthday present from him? I was buying the €99 one as it's reduced to €70 with free froather when you buy pods for the 'house'.

I said that it's relevant if it's a luxury appliance it's still IMO a kitchen appliance & not a gift for me!
I liked it to me buying him a nice teapot cos he like s tea 😀

So is he right? Please be gentle!

Mine was a Christmas present from my sister who knows I love coffee.

eyebrowsonfleek · 28/07/2017 11:43

Would he use it?

I think it's s great present for a coffee lover but if he was going to use it too I'd say it was a kitchen appliance.

geekone · 28/07/2017 11:43

YABU. It's a nice present as is a cool teapot.

wowfudge · 28/07/2017 11:43

I think YABU. It's a fab gift. It's not a hoover or an ironing board, it's actually something you'd get pleasure from using.

Bluerose27 · 28/07/2017 11:44

Does he like coffee too? Because if he does I'd be inclined to see it as a purchase for both of you conveniently disguised as a birthday present for you.

ShoeJunkie · 28/07/2017 11:44

I got mine for my birthday.

JamAndBread · 28/07/2017 11:44

I think it is a present. I'd be happy with it. In fact me and DP bought ourselves one for a Christmas present.

I also think a nice teapot is a good present for someone who likes tea (and teapots)!

JustHappy3 · 28/07/2017 11:45

I gave my husband one for his birthday...

bootygirl · 28/07/2017 11:46

We had a gaggia before and he used it to. He has always been very generous when buying gifts.

ZaraW · 28/07/2017 11:46

I know plenty of people who would be delighted to receive one. So yes YABU.

Namechangetempissue · 28/07/2017 11:46

YABU. I think it's a nice gift! You like coffee, he hasn't suggested buying you a mug and a pot of instant, he wants you to have a decent cup you can enjoy. I would also like a nice teapot. As would DH.

BringOnTheScience · 28/07/2017 11:46

I bought a Tassimo for DH and he was delighted. We both use it (and the DCs make hot chocolate) but it's still 'his'.

Batoutahell · 28/07/2017 11:48

I love coffee. That's a fantastic present.

MsPassepartout · 28/07/2017 11:48

Depends.

If he likes coffee just as much (or more) than you, I'd be a bit suspicious of his motives and inclined to see it as a family kitchen appliance disguised as a present.

But if he doesn't care for coffee and you do, then it sounds like a good present.

bootygirl · 28/07/2017 11:49

Just to clarify the gaggia we bought was a gift to ourselves for Christmas one year.
We normally buy luxury house hold gifts for our anniversary as a joint present to ourselves.

NurseButtercup · 28/07/2017 11:49

YANBU it's a kitchen appliance!
Doesn't matter what other people think, if you don't want a coffee maker as your birthday present then surely that's what matters? Confused

Namechangetempissue · 28/07/2017 11:49

Can also recommend the Fine Coffee Club for pods. We use them at work (I don't drink coffee but DH and staff rave about them). I just do a bulk order from them for various types and they are apparently very nice!

Roomster101 · 28/07/2017 11:49

I would be happy with that but it depends on whether he will use it as much as you. I see it as a "luxury appliance" as it is a lot more expensive than an ordinary coffee machine if you take the cost of pods into account.

tiggerbounce77 · 28/07/2017 11:50

So he has been thoughtful and picked something that he knows that you would enjoy and he is being unreasonable, I don't get it!

Sorry, but be grateful that he wants to get you something nice, there are plenty of people out there that would love that as a birthday present.

Namechangetempissue · 28/07/2017 11:51

If you don't want one then fair enough, but I don't think it's a shit gift.

Ulysses · 28/07/2017 11:52

I got one for my birthday and wasn't offended. I'd love a KitchenAid mixer for my next birthday but DH would faint at the price!

annandale · 28/07/2017 11:52

Um... yes it's a present and IMO a really nice one. So what if it sits in the kitchen. Putility it next to your bed if that helps.

GavelRavel · 28/07/2017 11:53

I think that's perfectly fine, I got mine as a BD present from DP and the kids.

missmapp · 28/07/2017 11:54

I bought DH one for his birthday a few years ago. But I don't drink coffee so it is only him that uses it .

I would be very happy with a quirky teapot as a gift though !

StepAwayFromCake · 28/07/2017 11:55

I would say it's a luxury specifically for you, even if he uses it occasionally, so, yes, it is a birthday present. A dishwasher, tumble drier or vacuum cleaner, OTOH, even though more expensive, would not be a birthday present. Perhaps it would feel more presentish if he got a top-of-the-range model, rather than an economy model? (Not a comment on the specific model, as I know nothing about them.)

I so would buy a special and lovely teapot for a tea-loving person's birthday!

I gave my dh, who drinks tea by the bucketful, a massive fancy mug for his birthday, and he used it with great pleasure every day for years, until it broke. When I replaced it, it was not as a birthday present, because I got one for myself as well, which IMO made it ordinary.
