That men on mumsnet seem to have. And why people never just state them. "His hobby" sounds so pervy

Dh's hobby is hiking, usually up big hills or mountains.

It's fine with me as he's more than happy to take the dc with him as soon as they're old enough, leaving me to go or not as I choose...win for me Grin

MaisieDotes · 23/07/2017 14:48

Friend's H recently broke his beck in three places doing his hobby.

He had to stay off work for weeks, she thought she was going to go demented with him hanging around the place complaining.

PenguinOfDoom · 23/07/2017 14:48

DH has a hobby which has not been mentioned so far but is not esoteric or pervy. It takes him away for a weekend every couple of months or so. I have a hobby which I can do while he's away doing his hobby. Win win.

TeaCake5 · 23/07/2017 14:48

It's often swinging.

Gliding. Ex used to go 7am Saturday, return 11pm Sunday. No plans could EVER be made as "it depends if it's going to be a good gliding day".

sykadelic · 23/07/2017 14:55

I would say "hobby" about DH because he does all of them at varying times, no specific outings. Guns (shooting, buying, research etc), vehicles (maintenance, racing, rebuilding), gaming (playing :P) so it would be easier to just say "doing one of his hobbies" 'cause what it is doesn't really matter... does it?

cod · 23/07/2017 14:56

OH It does. I'm obsessed now

While I think it would make more sense if people did just say "running" or "cycling", I am baffled by people's faux confusion about the word 'hobby. And also that it is the preserve of the childless, or the male.

Don't you people DO anything?

No art? No one sings, no one acts, no one plays a sport, goes on hikes, climbs, no one stargazes, no photographers? No flower-arrangers, jewellery makers, no bakers, no one plays a musical instrument? No one writes, attends a book club, studies for leisure? No one learns another language, runs, exercises, goes mountain biking, tabletop-gaming, Cosplay, collects things, train spots, video games?

"I've yet to hear of a hobby that doesn't sound either crap or hideously expensive."

You just... exist? No fun at all? No passion, no pleasure? What do YOU enjoy doing? ("lol jammies and sofa and gin lol")

The funny thing is the utter bitterness of the hobbyless of those who do hobbies. The sneering.

"Cycling. Gaming. LARPing. Any excuse to avoid doing actual parenting." Yes, that's exactly it. A mother in the church choir, a mother who rock-climbs on Saturdays and occasional weekends-away, a father who's in the TA, a mother who train n martial arts. Shirkers the lot of them, right?

"People who say they are "training" when they mean "exercising" are idiots imo."

What about when people ARE training for an event?

So apparently I have at least two "hobbies" urgh according to this thread - cooking and gaming. I would never have considered them "hobbies" urgh. Perhaps I should insist to DH that I have a couple of hours a week at least to pursue my "hobbies" urgh

AcrossthePond55 · 23/07/2017 15:03

Mine goes hang gliding. Expensive. Time consuming. Takes him away for days or a week at a time.

It's glorious! The DC are grown so I have the house to myself to do as I please. Even when the DC were younger it was a bit of a 'break', but both my boys were very easy children and I had both sets of DGP around. We'd go to the movies, take a drive, have a duvet and DVD day. The possibilities are endless. As the boys got older they'd go with him at times as overnights were usually camping trips.

Don't knock 'hobbies'. They can be great if you use that time to your advantage.

cod · 23/07/2017 15:08

Anyone who thinks this is s hobby knocking thread is obv a half wit

OP are you drunk? Your posts are slightly incoherent.

AlpacasPackOwls · 23/07/2017 15:17

I'm knocking the word hobby urgh, not actual hobbies urgh

Dawnedlightly · 23/07/2017 15:17

Happy sigh.

MycatsaPirate · 23/07/2017 15:17

Dp - tinkering with cars/motorbikes (don't worry cod he wears boots, he had a serious crash a few years back and lucky to survive)

Also a lifeguard so swim training, teaching first aid, driving the boat, launching/recovering the boat, manning lifeguard unit, attending other lifeguard clubs for various lifeguard stuff.

DD2 also a trainee lifeguard (she is 11). We spend a fucking lot of time at the beach/pool.... doing stuff like this.

JustDanceAddict · 23/07/2017 15:19

Mine plays football - pretty normal - has been for years.

HollyHollyHo · 23/07/2017 15:22

The only hobby my ex had was chasing other women. Fucking amateur hour though, he was shit at it

annandale · 23/07/2017 15:23

Totally agree Across. I am reading this with such envy. My dh does cycle but really only either when I can go with him or when I am at work. He's going on a two day cycling trip in September when I will be away. What I would give for two days in the house to myself, or with ds [sigh]
