That men on mumsnet seem to have. And why people never just state them. "His hobby" sounds so pervy

I cannot stop laughing at this thread.

Octopush poster deserves a prize.

I wish my DH had a proper hobby. Not playing whatever the latest game on xbox or PS4.

I go off running all the time (I have never thought about it as a hobby). Sat mornings are spend doing Parkrun then breakfast with my running friends and finish with cake (I take the DCs with me on occasion too when they want to come). I will spend a sunday a month going to a race too. I do tell him he can tell me not to go if he thinks Im shirking my responsibilities. He never does though. After all if Im not running I'd only be sitting about doing nowt half the time.

MumBod · 24/07/2017 22:09

Aw, Cod.

gingerbreadmam · 24/07/2017 22:23

ooh i always see hobby and am intrigued. Quite often see men who enjoy hobbies on affair threads so i always summise the hobby is tennis Grin not quite sure why i just picture a man vs woman match.

pid2000 · 24/07/2017 22:24

Perhaps it's because the word hobby is shorter than most hobby's actual names and as people on here seem unable to even complete a sentence without abbreviating half of it I would put it down to the laziness of the posters :D

ILoveDolly · 24/07/2017 22:41

I only came on this thread to say Wow! Hi Cod!
And that I wish my DP had a hobby as he just sits about the house being grumpy and watching football which he says is his hobby, but that's just watching tv, isn't it? I have actual past times I'd like to do IN PEACE such as tinkering on the piano and my scrapbook/self-indulgent photo album of the dcs.

riceuten · 24/07/2017 22:48

Shortwave radio

Trains

Music

Sci-Fi DVDs

Nerdish, if harmless

paxillin · 24/07/2017 23:02

I always wonder why these hobbies are supposedly so outing.

It's not as if the DH in question is usually the choreographer of the cross-dressing male synchronised swimmers' ensemble in Appledore or some such.

PlymouthMaid1 · 24/07/2017 23:06

Mine doesn't have a hobby unless you count endless gawking at cars he cant afford on the net, watching 'how its made' on box and wandering to local coffee shop to talk shit with randoms.

cheval · 24/07/2017 23:12

Have no idea what any of this means. Must be my age.

Brie · 24/07/2017 23:29

My friend's ex's hubby-hobby was shagging other women.

ilovesooty · 25/07/2017 01:40

I've spent much of the evening wondering whether serial killing interferes with family life.

paxillin · 25/07/2017 02:00

Probably not. Serial killers aren't very clubbable though.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 25/07/2017 02:21

Octopush poster deserves a prize. Hmm

That won't end well.

MargotLovedTom1 · 25/07/2017 02:31

My DH's hobby appears to be Candy Crush. He's fifty frigging one.

Schwanengesang · 25/07/2017 02:37

I've used hobby on here cos it's the only thing that would clearly differentiate DH from the husbands of the other identifiable MNers in my town. At least by not saying what it is I can still be one of a pool of about 10 rather than completely obvious.

To those upthread who said it's a bit joyless to just do the one thing for years — what if it's one of those 10,000 hours type things (ie you're not really that good til you have put in at least 10,000 hours)? Singing in a really good choir, playing in a good orchestra, are life-affirming, but you don't get there by giving it an hour a week for 3 years...

MrsOverTheRoad · 25/07/2017 02:45

Mine goes surfing. I just say "He's going surfing" and not "He's going to do his hobby."

"Do" a hobby sounds wrong doesn't it!

Dibbles1967 · 25/07/2017 03:27

Probably not. Serial killers aren't very clubbable though. One word. Dexter.

My DP runs and would never say it was a hobby. Pub. That's not his hobby either. It's more of a reason why he has to go running.

He also took up cycling, but only to go to & from the pub of an evening. It all works out in the end.

He also collects tupperware boxes and bits of wood. Not a hobby, just fucking annoying & we don't even live together.

Therealslimshady1 · 25/07/2017 06:59

People call it a "hobby" instead of specifying what it is, as they think.it is very outing.

As if, once people knew they had 2 DD and a husband who cycles, everyone would click and say:" I know who you are now!"

Alleycat1 · 25/07/2017 08:30

I am so lucky. My DP's hobby is DIY and he is really good at it. So new kitchen, new stairs, bookcases etc. Plus a lovely 'shed' for me to do my hobbies- painting, weaving and just chilling.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 25/07/2017 08:51

Golf probably. One of our Nct friends nearly had a nervous breakdown as her DH spent all Saturday at the golf course whilst she looked after newborn they both work full time

winobaglady · 25/07/2017 10:59

What's your hobby, Cod?

Husband's is wood turning, mine is selling the stuff he makes.

cod · 25/07/2017 12:45

Mine? I do masses of voluntary stuff. Does that count?
I read a lot. (Well until last year when it all went odd)
I exercise in various ways 4 times a week.
