That men on mumsnet seem to have. And why people never just state them. "His hobby" sounds so pervy

Or I. S iT?

annandale · 23/07/2017 14:06

cooking clearly can be incredibly time consuming if you go ottolenghi about it. dh had a patch of cooking involving making bagels and quince jelly.

nobody's mentioned rowing - 8 times a week for 2 hours at a time is a light schedule for hobby rowers doing little local comps.

My son wanted an apiary a few years ago. I should have got one.

Where? Why?

My husband's hobbies include cricket, hockey, cycling and mechanics. Never gets in the way of family time.

Mine are yoga, book group, climbing and needle crafts.

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/07/2017 14:10

The hobbyists spouses usually claim they couldn't possibly name said hobby as it would be "too outing". Yeah, 'cos he's the only person in the UK that does whatever it is so he'll be on his own all weekend Hmm.

When did rugby/cycling/dressing up/pissing about with bits of bike in a mate's shed become so unusual?

If you are the old codswallop, your typing is much improved. I used to spend happy evenings deciphering your posts when my kids were small. They are nearly all teenagers now.

MrsGotobed · 23/07/2017 14:10

Some hobbies also seem to be something that men of a certain age take up.

They hit Mid Life Crisis and suddenly take up motorbikes and leathers despite having hardly ever mastering a pushbike or they take up running with the aim of a doing marathon despite barely being able to mow the lawn without a 2 hour rest in front of Formula 1 on the TV afterwards.

Lots of MAMILs around these parts too

cod · 23/07/2017 14:11

I can't fathom book groups.
Then you say this and people ALWAYS say "oh we barely talk about the books and eat posh crisps "

Well I can do that at home. In my pants

Think I need to hide this thread. I should never have got involved. The word is used too frequently. I might go apoplectic.

Grin
WorraLiberty · 23/07/2017 14:11

I love the posters who say, "But I can't name the hobby in case it outs us".

5 pages later, it turns out to be golf.

Yeah. Report Report Report.

We're all going to work out who he is amongst the millions of other golf players, you twat.

cod · 23/07/2017 14:12

(Slightly dull post about motorbikes - do make sure they wear boots on them, not shoes. Extended Family crash involved amputation. Survived only bc boots on)

cod · 23/07/2017 14:13

Lol at you twat.

There used to be a woman on here who's h made a living ring Henry the 8th

Think he'd outed himself.

cod · 23/07/2017 14:14

"Being"
Not suds he phoned Henry the 8th.
(Laughing at my own joke now)

Right i can't concentrate on slagging of middle aged men with hobbies until this cod business is cleared. Why is everyone flummoxed about cod? Is cod famous?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 23/07/2017 14:17

It's always bloody cycling. They have to cycle really far so it takes ages. And then they get really good so they have to go and cycle round furrin mountains. I'm Scottish. We have mountains here.

The only cycling I do is down to the pub. That's a proper hobby. Drinking.

MandateMandy · 23/07/2017 14:17

I think language is catching on mn. People just copy others without eveb thinking about it- it can be the only explaination for "he was doing his hobby". So weird!

JaneEyre70 · 23/07/2017 14:17

I'm a golf widow. A very happy one too. One night a week he's out until around 10pm as they eat in the clubhouse after playing, and he's out most of Sundays. He's exercising, getting fresh air and gets rid of his stress by walloping a ball round a course. I genuinely don't get the issue with a partner having a "hobby", mine is walking and photography, and the odd spot of baking. It's good for the soul to unwind.

cod · 23/07/2017 14:18

IVe heard of a breed of cyclists called the BBTs.
(Back before twelve)

Poor henpecked bastards.

Can hens peck through all those layers of high-performance Lycra though?

Didiusfalco · 23/07/2017 14:23

If the H is completely obsessed with the hobby it usually turns out to be cycling. Does cycling make you obsessive or attract obsessive types??

MrsPorth · 23/07/2017 14:24

Cycling. Middle aged blokes who stick on some Lycra and think they're Geraint Thomas.

The word hobby is quite twee.

cod · 23/07/2017 14:24

What about running?
To my horror I've taken to dragging my Tits around park run.

It's awful. And addictive

OP posts:
LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 23/07/2017 14:25

Oh crikey, I'd peck through that...
