Pass remarkable sales assistant??

So I took 16month old DS for a pair of new shoes today to a local shop. The sales assistant seen fit to comment "what?? He's not walking yet? (With a shocked look on her face) He really should be at that age"
DS is sofa surfing and walking with support he just hasn't taken of independently yet. I am absolutely livid and I gave her a good dressing down, so was I unreasonable??

Gosh, you were really rude! She probably spoke without thinking. Most 16 month olds are walking so she was probably just a bit surprised to meet one that wasn't. The comments about her pay grade are uncalled for.

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2017 21:05

Oh thanks Peach I will try and wedge that into a conversation tomorrow, see what Worcestershire folk make of it. Grin

SerfTerf · 20/07/2017 21:06

I'd hate to hear you when someone DOES strike a nerve.

In all seriousness, it's understandable that you're touchy about it, but if he's not far off walking there's no real need to worry and there's certainly no need for bitchy "pay grade" comments.

People who measure children's feet all week are well versed in thinking about toddlers and the development of walking. She was absorbed and spoke without thinking. We've all done it.

Bumdishcloths · 20/07/2017 21:07

Next on "How to Make Friends and Influence People", woman acts like a dick in a shop and abuses sales assistant over a remark she could have just ignored like a normal human being.

khajiit13 · 20/07/2017 21:08

Wth OP of course YABU.

16 months is a bit later than average but that aside she was probably more surprised you were there buying shoes when your DC can't walk yet

gillybeanz · 20/07/2017 21:08

I hope they banned you and as for brainless, it's not too intelligent to lose it when somebody passes a comment about your child.
I'd have probably said similar and my time when I was working was worth a damn sight lot more than yours, I can promise you that. Grin

She obviously struck a chord with you, it doesn't matter that he isn't walking yet, but you don't seem to believe this, hence picking on a sales assistant.

For those that are interested, my DS has had many health issues including being a premature baby. He is coming on leaps and bounds and is perfect to me. I simply stated that this lady ( in her 40's and managed shop btw) was commenting on something that she had no training or need to comment on. The shoes are clarks pre walkers and are designed as a first shoe for pre walkers. I re read my posts and I do sound defensive and as a mother I probably am, but this lady was out of order imo. I simply said to her oh I'm sorry I came here for a pair of shoes, not a health review and advised that she shouldn't remark on any child's development as she doesn't know their history. I am actually a nice girl and have 3DS who have all had pre walkers and all their shoes bought in this shop and I always tip the lady who helps us. I buy all my husbands shoes there too. I go in at Christmas with wine and chocolates too!! I am not horrible, just a mother that feels this lady spoke out of turn and didn't apologise when she seen that she had caused offence.

SerfTerf · 20/07/2017 21:09

Of course she's trained in child development as it relates to the acquisition of walking.

EssieTregowan · 20/07/2017 21:09

You tip the lady in Clarks and take them wine and chocolate?

Really? Really really?

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2017 21:10

You go to the shoe shop with wine and chocolates? You tip people that work in the shoe shop? You know the age of the shoe shop manager?

So many questions...

Collaborate · 20/07/2017 21:10

This is getting too weird now. You take wine and chocolates to your local shoe shop at Christmas?? Really??!??

Buggeritimgettingup · 20/07/2017 21:10

You still sound like hard work

kali110 · 20/07/2017 21:10

Maybe it's just how you come across then

Silvercatowner · 20/07/2017 21:10

I go in at Christmas with wine and chocolates too

Now that made me laugh out loud.

Collaborate · 20/07/2017 21:11

Massive cross-post!

buttercup54321 · 20/07/2017 21:11

Well above her pay grade!! Arent we high and mighty? Lowly shop staff must never get above their station of course! You need to consider your snobby attitude. It isn't YOUR place to give anyone a dressing down.

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2017 21:11

I don't think staff in retail are allowed to accept tips. What is an appropriate tip in a shoe shop? Confused

CheshireChat · 20/07/2017 21:11

You would've kept the upper ground if you would've remained nice and civil.

You know, just say it's not a reason for concern unless he isn't cruising either or similar.

thefutureisfemale · 20/07/2017 21:11

Understandable if your DC is overcoming health issues that you may be a bit sensitive about that- but it doesn't give you the right to treat people like shit and think you're superior to them i.e. pay grade comments.

It may be a reason but it is certainly not an excuse.

user1483617032 · 20/07/2017 21:12

All you could have said was he has medical condition. I wouldn't shop there again unless you don't mind them bitching about you. "i just served that bitch".

PoochSmooch · 20/07/2017 21:13

You're cute when you're angry, OP Grin

I am loving "pass remarkable" though, which I had to google. Apparently, it's Scottish, as am I, so I'm amazed I haven't come across it before. So thank you for introducing it to me - you've performed well above your pay grade in so doing!

CheshireChat · 20/07/2017 21:13

Also, you're a woman not a girl.

Oldbutstillgotit · 20/07/2017 21:13

The only worse thing you could have said was " do you know who I am?"

timeforabrewnow · 20/07/2017 21:13

You have 4 sons and a husband who doesn't buy his own shoes.

It sounds like you've got a lot to deal with right there

MadameJosephine · 20/07/2017 21:13

Although walking isn't officially delayed unless a child isn't walking by 18 months it is not advised to buy shoes for a child who is not walking so she probably never sees children of his age who can't walk.

YABVU to give her a 'dressing down' and the pay grade comment was totally uncalled for.
