Pass remarkable sales assistant??

BitchinBlack · 20/07/2017 20:43

So I took 16month old DS for a pair of new shoes today to a local shop. The sales assistant seen fit to comment "what?? He's not walking yet? (With a shocked look on her face) He really should be at that age"
DS is sofa surfing and walking with support he just hasn't taken of independently yet. I am absolutely livid and I gave her a good dressing down, so was I unreasonable??

OP posts:
Popchyck · 20/07/2017 22:24

No way would my mum be buying shoes for my dad.

Baffies, though, that's different.

I remember her looking at a pair in MacKays one time, but she left them because she wasn't sure about the tartan.

Funnyfarmer · 20/07/2017 22:25

Are pre walking shoes like the little booties? Like a sock with a harder sole?
Do you get them fitted?

chipscheeseandgravy · 20/07/2017 22:25

Your quite right, someone should not comment on anything that's above their pay grade! Hmm

You sound bloody awful!, why buy shoes for a child that doesn't walk?

Amanduh · 20/07/2017 22:25

Above her pay grade?! Really?! Ok, I'll start living in your world and assume your pay grade is the lowest of the low then, because your spelling and grammar is very poor.

16 months is late(ish) to not be walking.
She didn't need to comment in such a way without knowing a back story I suppose. But your response was completely OTT and... you're horrible.

peachgreen · 20/07/2017 22:25

@Seeingadistance I LOVE that this thread has inspired a resurgence in such a useful phrase! Grin

Boredwithmyname · 20/07/2017 22:26

I need to buy new shoes tomorrow. Please advise how much I should tip in the shop? I'm worried that if I tip too much I may inadvertently raise the assistant's pay grade.

Strokethefurrywall · 20/07/2017 22:27

This thread brings me such joy Grin

Lovely story OP, bravo. I very much enjoyed the juxtaposition between "I gave her a good dressing down..." and "I wasn't rude to her..."

Even better, the tipping and gifting of wine and chocolates at Christmas, that was a cherry on top! Star

Ceto · 20/07/2017 22:28

Everyone is having a lovely time laying into OP, but just stop to think a bit. It could be incredibly hurtful if someone made this sort of remark to the parent of a child who walked late due to health difficulties or disability. Someone who manages a shoe shop should be well aware of that.

MetalMidget · 20/07/2017 22:29

I didn't walk until I was 18 months old, I didn't crawl - I was a bum shuffler. I was a very laid back child, perfectly happy to amuse myself with whatever was nearby!

PoochSmooch · 20/07/2017 22:29

popchyk, the baffies will go well with the good dressing gown (I can only read it that way now) for the pass remarkable shop assistant. She may not have been able to afford such luxuries on her pay grade.

Pigeonpost · 20/07/2017 22:29

What a brilliant thread. May I propose #notinmysalon

OstentatiousWanking · 20/07/2017 22:31

Tips and wine at Christmas eh. How very Lady Bountiful of you.

Popchyck · 20/07/2017 22:31

Actually, if one were looking for a definition of the type of people who frequent AIBU then I think one can do no better than:

  • Pass-remarkable nippy sweeties
MerchantofVenice · 20/07/2017 22:32

OP doesn't have the best way of expressing herself - I think some of you are being unfair and deliberately obtuse. If you look at her first post, she only says that the assistant looked shocked (unprofessional, surely?) and said that the child should really be walking. That's genuinely not on.

Yeah, the stuff about 'above her pay grade' is not great. But some of you have really latched onto that with proper spite. It's a bad choice of phrase- but you're willing to overlook the sales assistant's crass choice of words, no? OP didn't use those words to the assistant but the assistant did say the stuff about her son to the OP. And the OP is inexcusable but the assistant is totally in the right? Really?

Sorry - I can't get behind this OP-bashing thing on MN. Yes, this thread's mental. But still.

FrasierCrane · 20/07/2017 22:34

"She had no business being surprised" 🤣

Your username says it all.

MagicMarkers · 20/07/2017 22:35

I had to look up pass remarkable.
en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/pass-remarkable

Popchyck · 20/07/2017 22:35

OP, come on, tell the truth.

Did you ask this sales assistant out for a square go?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/07/2017 22:37

I bought my husbands shoes and I'm an NHS HCP Registered Podiatrist For shame...............

Disclaimer: DH bought some nice, smart black lace-ups 50% off in Clarks sale.
"I like these , can you get me another pair"?
I dutifully pootled off with the end bit of the box , showed the salesman in Clarks and said "Can I have a pair of these style/size/colour"

I wasn't struck down Grin

OP- I probably am the right paygrade to pass comment but I simply CBA

Strokethefurrywall · 20/07/2017 22:37

Also, DS1 walked on his 1st birthday, DS2 didn't take his first steps until a week shy of 16 months and even then a few steps and then he'd sit down.

I just couldn't be bothered to get so prickly about something so minor. So she spoke out of turn, no need for all the dramatic histrionics and "dressing downs"!!

PixieXox · 20/07/2017 22:37

That is late to be walking. I know this as my best friend is a GP and her daughter took a while to start walking, it was round about that length of time. No need to be oversensitive though, she just accidentally said what everyone would think. In the real world not everyone is going to walk on eggshells around you.

Well done though. Your entitled remark has properly provided a lot of amusement. Hope you don't plan on going back anytime soon, you will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Customer service worker yet treats staff like that. Couldn't make it up ahah

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 20/07/2017 22:38

Popchyck did your mum say 'pass remarkable' to you directly? Mine only ever said it in a reporting back stylee, as in 'Well your auntie Carol says your Auntie Beryl is buying a caravan and they can't afford it, but Carol has always been a bit pass remarkable.'

JeffStellingsLeftEyebrow · 20/07/2017 22:39

This is a hilarious thread. Excellent work.

scottishdiem · 20/07/2017 22:40

Just because you squeezed something out of your vagina does not automatically give you a right to be an abusive bitch.

thefutureisfemale · 20/07/2017 22:41

@Popchyck a square go Grin

I'm howling

Popchyck · 20/07/2017 22:42

Lonny, Oh God yes, mum would say it to me all the time.

Me: It's raining.
Her: Don't be so pass remarkable.
