To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

They should be outright banned, along with those stupid bloody vaping pens.
There is no health benefit to smoking, and even a small amount of passive smoke can be very dangerous.

Before anyone likens it to alcohol, drinking doesn't directly infringe on other people, unlike smoking as the smoke has to go somewhere, and if you're around people you're making them breathe in a whole host of carcinogens that the body cannot metabolise or get rid of, they stay there forever. It only takes one cigarette, smoked yourself or by passive smoke, to end up with smoking caused lung cancer one day, because those carcinogens damage cells and can eventually lead to abnormal growth that becomes cancerous. It can show up years after exposure.

Ollivander84 · 14/07/2017 19:26

Those stupid vaping pens are helping a LOT of people quit tobacco. Less second hand smoke, less health problems, less kids exposed to smoke...

coddiwomple · 14/07/2017 19:28

So non smokers complained about smoking in pubs/restaurants etc

We still are complaining. Smoking hasn't been banned from pubs and restaurants yet, just the indoors area, so it was never enough. It was probably better to do it by little steps, but now everybody is used not to smoke inside, it's time to ban in every eating area.
The weather or seasons make no difference, it's still unpleasant and unnecessary to be in a cloud of smoke when you come in or out the place even if it's raining. You just need to learn to wait after the meal or drink to have your fab, don't worry, you will get used to it eventually. It's better for you anyway.

Seeyamonday · 14/07/2017 19:34

Geta grip, I smoke and am very considerate of non smokers but I've really had enough of people thinking that we're the devils own... Grow up and let others live their lives!!!

Man I'll tell you it's very very rare I read something on here where my wanted response could get me banned. Bravo, I'm impressed.

gamerchick · 14/07/2017 19:42

And I don't even smoke Grin

GreenTulips · 14/07/2017 20:04

What like drink driving? Domestic violence? Some towns in the Med want to ban British drinkers!!

What about girls being raped or dragged home?

A&E on a Friday night?

Yep no effect on others whatso sever

JacquesHammer · 14/07/2017 20:45

Grow up and let others live their lives!!!

Oh the irony 😂

I am quite happy for you to life your life. Just don't inflict your revolting smell on me.

Sushi123 · 14/07/2017 20:49

The wording of your question suggests vindictiveness 'serve some smokers right'
Nasty

Skylander01 · 14/07/2017 21:06

You would be better off banning guns from your post war country!

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2017 21:23

Before the smoking ban, there weren't many outdoor seating areas except for pub gardens. We live in the Land Of Drizzle. We're not Italy or the south of France and we never had much of a pavement cafe culture prior to 2007. Cafes and restaurants started providing these spaces so they didn't lose smoking customers. The fact they are still maintained all year round 10 years later is most definitely for the benefit of smoking customers, even though for the handful of sunny warm days we get each year, they are popular with everyone.

Nobody used to go the pub for their health. Pubs used to be for drinking and socialising. They fared extremely badly after the ban because smokers started drinking at home in greater numbers, very few of the non-smokers who promised they would visit the pub more often if it weren't for the smoke actually did so, and because without the fug of smoke, pubs smelt like sweaty toilets with added vinegar until they had the money to refurbish and they were given no help with this.

I know you all love sitting in a beer garden on a sunny day but pubs can't survive on your fairweather, child-friendly custom. Some people are smugly pronouncing that they have local pubs that don't allow smoking in the garden. So go there. Put your money where your mouth is and support businesses that are providing you with what you want. Not everything needs a law or a ban.

It might be just my opinion, but I think some children / teens think it's cool to vape so they start on that - it may be less harmful than actual cigarettes, but personally I'd rather them not do either.

Rabblemum · 14/07/2017 21:31

I am an evangelical non smoker and drinker but When you walk into a street in any town there's pollution. Even if you wore a mask you'd breath in all sorts of nasties, that's just life. Make smoking illegal in public you'd harm kids by driving smoking parents back in doors with more harm done to kids and people who are trapped with smoke in a way smaller space.

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2017 21:36

Plus if you ban smoking everywhere ( not that I can see it happening ) except your own home, what about the babies and children etc who have parents who smoke and don't get a say ......just having my two penneth

If I have a say in who is to be downwind of a smoker - my child or theirs - I choose theirs, every time. I'm sure I'm not alone here.

This is one of the most horrible posts I have ever read on here.

There is incontrovertible evidence that smoking indoors around children causes actual serious harm. There is no evidence at all that being around smokers outdoors is a risk, beyond things like asthma - for which all sorts of things can be a trigger and it would not be reasonable to ban them all.

You would rather subject other people's children to that actual serious harm than have your precious little darlings encountering a whiff of outdoor smoke. I hope you are alone in that sort of thinking.

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2017 21:46

mummyrabbitpeppapig - It might be just my opinion

Yeah it is Smile

thefutureisfemale · 14/07/2017 21:53

Smokers are lower class.

Ollivander84 · 14/07/2017 21:53

Lower class? I'm calling thread bingo!

treacletoffee23 · 14/07/2017 21:55

It would be nice if parts of a pub grounds could be kept for non-smokers to enjoy meals outside. I don't like attending my local hospital where, despite purpose built shelters, smokers gather like desperados around the entrance

jenka91 · 14/07/2017 21:59

Check out all these people wanting to ban smoking and cars because of the environmental impact. Same mums who triple bag their babies disposable nappy because they can't stand the smell of shit.

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2017 22:09

Smokers are lower class.

Well yes this is worth talking about. The smokers that are left are overwhelmingly poor people, and most especially poor people who have mental health issues. Smoking is the main cause of health inequalities in the UK today.

I'm sure you meant this as a sneery point but in fact it's something everybody decent should care about.

GreenTulips · 14/07/2017 22:36

Ollivander84 - Those stupid vaping pens are helping a LOT of people quit tobacco. Less second hand smoke, less health problems, less kids exposed to smoke...

This with giant knobs on.

Vaping is the most realistic chance we have for achieving the endgame of smoking. This is better for you, the self-righteous non-smoker, but is also better for smokers who are the people who actually die from smoking, or lose their limbs or spend their last decade or two unable to breathe properly.

All you need to do is get out of the fucking way to enable this major public health achievement to happen.

Ollivander84 · 14/07/2017 22:47

Pencils - my local hospital has banned e cigs Sad with a massive sign saying "ring the quit squad" and another one saying "whether you smoke, vape or chew we can help you to quit" and "quit tobacco today"
I was SO enraged

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2017 22:55

Shit, which NHS trust is this? We could maybe write them some letters.

They're out of touch with the general PH consensus which is to permit vaping on hospital grounds and to make a clear distinction between vaping and smoking.

BlueIsYou · 14/07/2017 23:02

abu! would you say that some fat people will only have themselves to blame when junk food is banned?!

You mean the fat people, all of them, who's only healthy they're jeopardising is their own?

Can't say I've had a cough from walking past someone eating a burger 🍔
