To pull someone up on their incorrect use of grammar in the classroom of children?

I'm working with another TA (new to this job) until the term breaks and we're not getting on. I used to be a parent at the school and thought she didn't mind me as I wasn't a fussy parent (she's always had the reputation for being a bit scary-this said by children and parents alike but she was good to mine and our paths rarely crossed)

She's very cool with me which I can handle and furthermore if she doesn't like me no problem as long as we can get the job done.

She keeps criticising my using certain phrases like "splendid" or "Cheese and Crackers" as a child-friendly expletive Grin even "marvellous" bothers her. This said, I've heard her over and over incorrectly speak to children. When one little boy told her his mum doesn't like him to say a phrase in that way-he was chided and told her way is perfectly ok.

I'm tempted to say something to her but worry she'll get a bit nasty.

Probably not worth saying anything at this point in year

But you have to give examples of what she is saying....

YouTheCat · 12/07/2017 17:08

There's less than 2 weeks to go. This person might end up working with your child in future. Keep your mouth shut.

She is a TA, not the teacher. Her job is to support individuals in specific ways so I don't think her mode of expression needs to be overly scrutinised.

Alexkate2468 · 12/07/2017 17:17

You need to give examples. Im a teacher and it bothers me when other adults in the class use incorrect grammar when speaking ("I'm going to learn you how to do that" or "We could of went in there"). I gently try to model it by repeating the phrase correctly. I wouldn't say anything directly, especially not infront of children.

Nina, yes but I'm being lazy on a phone, chatting to an informal audience and not writing on a board where a class can see. I can't be bothered to go back and edit my posts.

RoganJosh · 12/07/2017 17:38

How does she comment on your use of 'splendid' and 'marvellous'? I'm not quite sure why that affects my answer.

Alexkate2468 · 12/07/2017 17:40

Pengwynn, yes they do and outside of a classroom it doesn't really bother me too much. Children write how they speak and there's SO much of a focus on grammar that little errors like that make a big difference to them so I try to correct early and prevent bad habits from forming.

Perhaps she finds your Enid Blyton impression quite annoying Grin

My DC school currently has a rogue apostrophe in a board in the hall. My teeth are itching just thinking about it. In the main hall of all places Shock

orlantina · 12/07/2017 18:01

Forget TAs, I worked for a head who decided to tell the children that words ending in 'ly' were adverbs.

Oh - and teachers and TAs writing 'could of'

Alexkate2468 · 12/07/2017 18:06

Pengwynn, I'm on an informal mumsnet discussion and using my phone. It's not a thesis. I'm perfectly capable of constructing sentences when it's required. If I made a mistake in a class setting then I would expect to be corrected. I don't see how making sure children have something correctly modeled is such a bad thing. It's my job.

headinhands · 12/07/2017 18:10

No. You said you don't like her. Just leave it be. You'll gain esteem from other staff by being able to ride above it.

Don't trot out that excuse. It is unworthy and laughable. Teachers are never off duty when using language so your "being lazy" is unconvincing, frankly.

rolls eyes

nina2b · 12/07/2017 18:16

Oh - and I am using my phone, too. Lol

BasketOfDeplorables · 12/07/2017 18:17

In the context of an Internet forum, your grammar is fine, Alexkate.
