A friend of mine had a cousin who happened to also be a cousin of Jim Kerr from Simple Minds. Although my friend was not actually related to Jim Kerr she referred to him as her half cousin. Another friend used to boast that she and Simon Le Bon were at school together, they did indeed go to the same school but not at the same time. Anyone else got any vague claims to fame?

Oh, and Alan Titchmarsh's mum used to use my parents post office.

bonbonours · 15/07/2017 20:31

Catra my husband once saw Diarmuid O'Brien in the audience at a pop concert and shouted out, "look it's Dermott O'Leary!" I kept waiting for him to come out with that story on Mock the Week "some idiot called me Dermott O'Leary the other day"

EthelMerman · 15/07/2017 20:34

I was sent to buy chocolate pigs of all things from Harrods; happened upon Alan Rickman also heading for the chocolate dept, so followed him.

Was on the same flight as Imelda May from Dublin but too shy to ask for autograph for my ma-in-law.

Went to the same school as Tom Law who was the previous "face" of Peter Beale, but years before he was there. We did have the same drama teacher though!

Yesterday I met a puppy whose litter mate has joined the Danish royal family. There's tentative for you!

Serenitymummy · 15/07/2017 20:37

A friend of mine went to school with the main guy from True Blood. And I once walked past Zachary Quinto while I was on my honeymoon in Rome.

GuiltyPleasure · 15/07/2017 20:38

FIL's cousin is married to a cousin of Anthony Hopkins.

MaureenDodd · 15/07/2017 20:48

My latest one is ridiculously tentative.

I can't remember which friend, but I have a Facebook friend who is tagged in a wedding picture. Bride, groom, parents of both, few other guests - maybe 10 - 12 people I'm the pic. One of the people is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Now, I can't for the life of me remember which FB friend it is and it is likely its a Mumsnet/FB friend...but I totally stalked the wedding photos (they were lovely)

A less tenuous link, but on the same theme. I have family friends who are very good friends with Chirs Evan's (DJ) daughter. She's part of their family, since she was a little girl. I was on our mutual friend's FB and her name popped up as a "like" on a comment. So I also fb stalked her wedding pics (the ones that mutual friend was tagged in). Lovely , gorgeous pics and a very happy father of the bride.

I was waiting behind Su Pollard in Waitrose, dressed like a rainbow she was very friendly and chatty and making everyone smile. I excitedly told DD who said she lived at the bottom of DD's friend's garden. Not as magical as it sounds, she meant their gardens had a party fence.
I bumped into Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick, Beaky and Titch in a hotel doorway on their way to a gig. We chatted a bit and they asked me whether I'd like to go to the gig. I almost turned around but went on in to a boring meeting instead. Fool!
I once saw a man near the mobile PDSA on Islington Green with a ginger cat worn as a scarf! I wondered who they were ...
My biggie is that I was admired in my pram in Weston-super-Mare by His Excellency Haile Selassie.

Beeziekn33ze · 15/07/2017 21:31

Oh, cousin's BiL was the school boy who sang with Sarah Brightman on Panis Angelica.
As a 4 year old DD went on stage at a pantomime and was kissed on the cheek by Des O'Connor. She wiped it off as she left the stage and got a huge laugh.
GS was at nursery with Vivienne Westwood's GD and on holiday played with Simon Le Bon's DDs.
My friend taught Macca's niece, I taught Mickey Virtue's sister and Nicky Rhodes' cousin, none at the same school!

SheilaBirling · 15/07/2017 21:34

At my primary school, one of the girls in my class lived next door to Roger de Courcy (and Nookie the Bear). He was a ventriloquist from the 80s by the way. I have, somewhere, a signed photo. When I was 9 or 10, my mum and I saw Keith Chegwin and Maggie Philbin when we were shopping at Brent cross.

cleanasawhistle · 15/07/2017 21:44

My son used to work with the brother of an ex Blue Peter presenter, they are still friends.

During his time doing that job my son would get asked for his autograph,my son is not famous but was well known in the local area.

Kyyria · 15/07/2017 21:57

I was doing a level 3 qualification for work through a local college. My tutor's best friend's son was Joe Mcelderry (?X Factor 2009).

I also went to the same college as the Verve (not at the same time) and several Hollyoaks actors/actresses (although couldn't tell you who other than that one of them dated Ryan Biggs for a bit).

Kyyria · 15/07/2017 21:59

I also went to Uni with someone who was best friends with the niece of Grotbags

Fl0ellafunbags · 15/07/2017 22:01

A bloke I sold a newspaper to met Tom Jones. He showed me the photos on his phone.

Suzypoo10 · 15/07/2017 22:09

belgina · 15/07/2017 22:10

I have a few.

DH's friend's cousin is Lucy Benjamin.

When I was a student mw someone from the Apprentice was in our hospital.

An ex-colleague was in the 2nd series of Bake Off.

Kevin De Bruyne (footballer) is from my village.

My son went to the same primary school as Ellie Simmonds for a year..

RedastheRose · 15/07/2017 22:12

My uncle through marriage is related to Glenda Jackson.

QuietlyPondering · 15/07/2017 22:14

My MIL dated Sean Bean at school.

greathat · 15/07/2017 22:16

I threw up on Chris Tarrant when I was 3 :)

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 15/07/2017 22:28

"Have quite a few non tenuous ones...but simply telling people you are married to Marshall Mathers III can't be nearly as much fun surely!"

@BeeThirtythree, are you actually saying you are married to Eminem??!!

driveninsanebythehubby · 15/07/2017 22:32

My battery is running low so I'll add mine then carry on reading til it runs out! I have a couple:

On holiday in St Lucia in 1989 as a child, Anita Dobson (Angie from Eastenders) was at the same hotel that we were at.

I was good friends with a girl at Uni who had served George Michael and Geri Halliwell in the pub she worked in at her home town.

I was with that same friend when she received an excited phone call from someone at home telling her that she's just seen Robbie Williams in their town and sadly my friend, who was a huge fan, had already made plans to help someone that weekend so couldn't even go home and stabs a chance of seeing him herself.

Another friend - her mum almost got knocked off a pier into the sea by Jim Davidson because he was really rude and arrogant and would not move out of anyone's way.

My mum and dad met Noel Edmunds at a pub event (as in an event for publicans) years ago for Miller Lite.

Less tenuous - I met Michaela Strachen at a Crime Prevention conference when I was 14. I have met most of the cast if Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly.

Im sure there are more, ridiculously tenuous ones so I'll have a think!

driveninsanebythehubby · 15/07/2017 22:36

Ooooh - at secondary school, one of my best friends was the daughter of the woman who kicked Mark Le Mar out of their house on The Big Breakfast because she "wasn't feeling very well" (my friend had answered the door and let him in - poor girl never lived it down, people had recorded it and kept playing it over & over to tease her, even though it wasn't her fault)

Kidsruinedmylife · 15/07/2017 22:44

My half brother who I met once over 20 years ago is a bona-fide stunt man and has been in films such as sleepy hollow and gladiator, even though I couldn't see his name in the credits!

Evewasinnocent · 15/07/2017 23:23

Are these tenuous enough:

Two friends of mine went to the same school as Rob Brydon. One of them says she snogged him at a school disco - the other says this isn't true!

Ruth Jones also attended the same school (but as she is younger than them - they don't remember her)

I went to the same school as Gareth Bale - my DM asked if I knew him (but as it was nearly 30 years before he did) I don't!!

ShiftyLookingBadger · 15/07/2017 23:48

Oh, good thread! My grandfather was a sheet metal worker and apparently made R2D2's feet for the early Star Wars films at Shepperton Studios Grin
