Dog owner putting poo bags in my wheelie bin

ParanoidBeryl · 11/07/2017 00:46

Our council has a system of 3 wheelie bins, each get collected fortnightly. Black bin for landfill, blue for recycling, and brown for garden and food compost.

For the last three or four of times I have put out my brown bin, after it has been emptied, but before I have had a chance to bring it back in, some dog owner has put a black bag of dog shit into my brown bin.

AIBU to think this is gross? Not only does it mean it would fester for a fortnight in my bin, but the brown bins don't accept plastic, so there is every likelihood that the council wouldn't lift it if they noticed it, and it means plastic bags of dog shit are going for composting.

I assume it is the same dog owner each time, as it is the same type & colour of bag each time.

If you are a dog owner would you think this is ok?

Can't use bin locks here, council doesn't have lorries that can pick up wheelie bins!

(head wobble)

So how are they emptied ? The whole point of a wheelie bin is to allow mechanised emptying (and weighing, but that's in the future) ????

The other suggestion would be to get some liners and ensure your bin is lined as soon as possible after emptying. Then at least the foreign dog shit won't mess up the bin for you to have to clean.

When wheelie bins were introduced in Harrow, (early 90s) there was a brief halcyon period where enough people left them by their front gate that it was like the borough had sprouted 10,000 public bins overnight. There was a lot less litter.

As you may have guessed, it didn't last Sad.

YANBU at all OP. I don't own a dog for many reasons, one of which is that I don't want to have to deal with dog shit. Therfore I don't want to have to deal with someone else's dog's shit in my bin. You want to own a dog? You pick up its mess and either put it in a suitable public bin or take it home to your own bin. Nobody else has to accept any part of clearing up after your dog and that includes opening up their bin to find you've left a stinky little gift. If you think it's not gross to smell or handle once it's bagged, why can't you bear to carry it home to YOUR bin?

justkeepswimmingg · 11/07/2017 11:53

Oh hell no..
I have a dog, and the smell of putting her poo in our bin is bad enough, I wouldn't inflict that on anyone else Grin.
Either public bin, or it comes home with me. A good dog owner will know where the local public dog poo waste bins are, or at least a public street bin (that gets emptied daily).
I think a sign on your bin is the best bet.

TrickyKid · 11/07/2017 11:58

I always take it with me until I see a public bin or until I get home. It is tempting to put it in someones bin rather than walk home with a bag of poo but I'd feel really bad about it.

Scentofwater · 11/07/2017 12:01

Lurking We have old style black round bins. All bins are emptied by hand into the lorry. Welcome to Cornwall, the land of underinvestment.

Even if I bought liners (why should I have to!) if someone puts a poo filled bag on the top of my bin bags in my bin then the whole lot will not be collected.

Just, you know, take your dogs shit home or put it in a public bin, please don't make it my problem by leaving it in my bin!

Slimthistime · 11/07/2017 12:03

Kate " If you think it's not gross to smell or handle once it's bagged, why can't you bear to carry it home to YOUR bin"

Exactly.

Maybe the people who don't mind should have a sign on their bin? That might help.

PsychologicalSaline · 11/07/2017 12:10

Definitely not ok to put bagged dog poo in someone else's bin. When our dog was a puppy we initially put the bagged poo in our waste bin but the stench was horrific. Plus when other rubbish compresses the relatively thin poo bags they're likely to rip and make it even worse!

We now put all our dog's poo, whether collected while out on a walk or from the garden (he only goes here if desperate so very rarely), in bags in dedicated dog poo bins. I would never put my bagged dog poo in private waste bins.

provider5sectorzz9 · 11/07/2017 12:23

Dogs are cute and fun to have, shit is revolting and a health hazzard, if you have a dog you have to carry the shit around with you.
I'm appalled that you're even tempted to dump it on other people.

So many public places have been turned into dog lavatories, every time I go out I have to watch dogs defecating left right and centre, you all love your fur babies and the rest of us have to put up with shit everywhere, bins full of shit, bags full of shit

LurkingHusband · 11/07/2017 12:26

At least you have bins. Until 2 years ago in Brum, we had to stack our black bags up on bin day. And see them ripped open by foxes, magpies, crows, ravens, badgers, cats, and rats.

We (finally !!!!) got wheelie bins when the council tried to outsmart Eric Pickles, and move to a fortnightly collection system. DoE jumoed in with their "no loss of weekly collections" pledge and offered to pay to keep weekly collections. The condition of which was - wheelie bins.

For reasons beyond my ken, Brummies seemed to have a pathological aversion to wheelie bins, despite most of the country managing for decades (in Harrows case).

Although (looks out at bin uncollected for second week running due to a strike .....) it's immaterial what bin you have, if it's not collected Angry.

GloriaV · 11/07/2017 12:35

Put a Beware Rat Poison sign near the bin. Grin

sugarandshite · 11/07/2017 12:36

I'd never do this. Even when the bags are tied shut it still stinks. I don't put poo bags in my own bin never mind anyone else's.

Scentofwater · 11/07/2017 12:44

Lurking if you want to know, we moved and no longer have bins at all! None ever supplied by council in old house either. I see your crows and raise you seagulls Wink

hmcAsWas · 11/07/2017 12:47

I wouldn't deposit my dogs poo in someone else's bin, nor for that matter any other rubbish. Its a darn cheek

Giraffey1 · 11/07/2017 12:49

Provider, you are talking bollocks.
OP, I am a dog owner and I wouldn't put poo bags in someone else's bin. It's rude and uneccesary.

userres · 11/07/2017 12:49

Put a sign on inside of bin lid saying
"SMILE YOUR ON CCTV
NOW TAKE YOUR BAG OF SHIT HOME"

Seriously gross, I would say someone local to you if it's s bag full as you wouldn't want to carry it far

LurkingHusband · 11/07/2017 13:25

I see your crows and raise you seagulls

Oh, we have seagulls too (I forget the pigeons, btw). But generally they're not seen on the ground much.

If you've ever seen a pack (?) of magpies, you'd know why. It's like a corvid remake of "Reservoir Dogs" when they strut across our lawn.

Ontheboardwalk · 11/07/2017 15:52

Our general waste bins are collected every 3 weeks. I wouldn't want dog poo in my bin for 3 weeks.

Some cheeky fecker, gotta be a neighbour as we're a Drive, walked up my path and put a bag of dog sick in my cardboard wheelie bin.

what pissed me off big time was I'd arranged for a delivery to be placed in the bin, that was on my property and a cars length from the street, because I wasn't in at the time.

Delivery guy threw the parcel and the bag popped. I came home to a parcel and bin with dog sick - nice!!

There are only a couple of dogs on the Drive, my money is on the yapping dog next door. I'm still plotting my revenge. On the neighbour of course not the dog.

LurkingHusband · 11/07/2017 16:00

I would be wary of assuming where the dogs come from.

We live in a cul-de-sac, and I know people who don't live here walk their dogs here Hmm

Ontheboardwalk · 11/07/2017 16:05

lurking fair point, I suppose it's easier to leave your dog poos and vomit on someone else's street...

Coulddowithanap · 11/07/2017 16:07

If this is a general waste bin then I don't see the problem.

lovelysquish · 11/07/2017 16:09

I move it so it's not easily accessible. Done

PsychologicalSaline · 11/07/2017 16:10

If this is a general waste bin then I don't see the problem

You might not see the problem but I'd bet you'd certainly smell it!

SuburbanRhonda · 11/07/2017 16:31

It wasn't a general waste bin. The OP says this was her brown bin - for garden and food waste.

In my area this waste gets mascerated and then sprayed into crops.

Still happy about having dog shit in with that?

Slimthistime · 11/07/2017 16:32

Boardwalk- OMFG. Evil evil wankers.

I often feel I want nothing more than a house and garden. Threads like this make me think again. It's not impossible to get to the bins for our block of course, but you'd have to know where they are and tbh would pass several more accessible bins if you wanted to dump dog poo. Plus we haven't got any gardens so there's usually someone smoking out there!
