Dog owner putting poo bags in my wheelie bin

ParanoidBeryl · 11/07/2017 00:46

Our council has a system of 3 wheelie bins, each get collected fortnightly. Black bin for landfill, blue for recycling, and brown for garden and food compost.

For the last three or four of times I have put out my brown bin, after it has been emptied, but before I have had a chance to bring it back in, some dog owner has put a black bag of dog shit into my brown bin.

AIBU to think this is gross? Not only does it mean it would fester for a fortnight in my bin, but the brown bins don't accept plastic, so there is every likelihood that the council wouldn't lift it if they noticed it, and it means plastic bags of dog shit are going for composting.

I assume it is the same dog owner each time, as it is the same type & colour of bag each time.

If you are a dog owner would you think this is ok?

I agree it sounds really anal and nit-picky, but since the austerity cuts lots of people have had bin collections dramatically reduced, and fines introduced for the wrong stuff in the wrong bin.

We live near a takeaway, and if I don't get my bin back in sharpish, it's very quickly a quarter-full with rubbish from the takeaway. My bin is only emptied 3-weekly, so I can't manage on 3/4 capacity, plus if any recyclables or food waste are spotted, the binmen will refuse to empty it.

MrsBotox · 11/07/2017 10:06

A bin in IS just a bin FGS Hmm.
There are some seriously unhinged people on here

spidey66 · 11/07/2017 10:08

I'd rather it went in my bin than remained on the pavement TBH. But I'm also guilty of chucking the odd coke tin into someone else's green bin as I'm passing (won't go into a garden-just if it's in reach.) My local authority just want you to chuck the recycling directly into wheelie rather than use bags in the wheelie.

megletthesecond · 11/07/2017 10:09

A coke can doesn't smell and taint the whole bin though.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 10:12

MrsBotox

Hmm Ugh, the stock answer of the inconsiderate; you're all being so dramatic! YOU must be unhinged. YOU must be the problem. Frankly, when someone makes the argument you just did, I tend to discount their opinion in future. It's a lazy way to turn the problem around and about the person who is upset by something. Minimise it and then call them unhinged / mad / dramatic.

spidey66 · 11/07/2017 10:13

Bins smell though, whatever is in them.

I must be very laid back, but I fail to get anal about this kind of thing. As I said, I'd rather someone put it in my bin than leave it on the pavement for me to tread in.

brexitstolemyfuture · 11/07/2017 10:14

Sometimes on bin days I put some recycling in a bin out on the street as I pass on my way into work? Obviously it doesn't smell and will be collected pretty soon. Is that ok?

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 10:15

And make it about*

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 10:17

Presumably it isn't faeces Grin? That wouldn't bother me, unless someone put something in the wrong bin, or put something in my recycling that my LA won't accept.

"For the last three or four of times I have put out my brown bin, after it has been emptied, but before I have had a chance to bring it back in, some dog owner has put a black bag of dog shit into my brown bin."

To the people suggesting a bin lock-it's going not to help in this situation!

It will if it's a gravity lock. They only open when the bin is upside down and close again when it is upright.

Another dog owner here and I'd never put my dog's shite in someone else's bin. It's bad enough carrying it home and putting it in my own bin because it stinks, but it's my dog and my dog's waste so I put up with the honk. I'd be seriously pissed off if someone was using my bin for their dog crap. It's rude, selfish and downright disgusting. And yes, I would feel the same if some randomer dumped a dirty nappy in my wheelie bin too.

In this day and age I'm still amazed/horrified at the amount of people who don't bother picking up their dog shit and leaving it all over pavements, but even more amazed at those who make the effort to pick up but then leave the bags lying on the pavement, on people's garden walls and even on the branches of trees, like little shit parcels which will eventually degrade and shower turds everywhere - WTF is that all about? It's fucking disgusting. No one wants to have to see, smell or deal with their own dog shit, let alone someone else's.

OP, I'd be inclined, if you're able to, to wait around for the culprit and have a firm word with them about not using your bin for their waste. If you can't, a sign on the bin stating that the bin is not for use of the public to dispose of dog poo may be a start. You count even go the whole hog and say that anyone who leave dog poo in your bin with find the poo will follow them home and be posted back through their letter box.

Stressedout10 · 11/07/2017 10:23

@yellow
1 it's very rarely that I do this and only on bin day and only if they haven't been emptied!
2 my local council removed almost all of the public bins bringing in an any bin policy
3 the few public bins that there are (1 per public park) are only emptied once every 2 weeks and are overflowing after 3 days
4 it's not your bin it belongs to the council
5 I am a responsible dog owner who always picks up 2 poops my dogs and 1 that belongs to some lazy so and so who just left it ☺

Alltheprettyseahorses · 11/07/2017 10:31

4 it's not your bin it belongs to the council

And is given to me as a service for which I pay council tax. When you pony up towards that bill, then you can put your dogshit in my bin.

SlothMama · 11/07/2017 10:39

I am a dog owner and I wouldn't dream of putting their poo in someone else's bin, purely because it smells! I don't like to put it in my own tbh that's why I always make sure our walks pass a dog poo bin before we go home.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 10:45

If I wanted dog shit in my bin I would get a bloody dog! If you have a dog, clear up after it and take it's mess home.

And no, I don't hate dogs, I hate the irresponsible, entitled owners.

qazxc · 11/07/2017 10:45

I wouldn't mind anyone putting a poo bag in my bin, better than leaving it there or hanging said bag in trees or bushes.
I do offer if I see someone cleaning up after their dog.
But I'd be pissed off if they put I I the wrong bin, which would mean I could be fined or not have my bin picked up and have to fish it out to put in black bin.

sodabreadjam · 11/07/2017 10:51

I notice that some of the residents of a block of flats near my home have put DIY locks on their wheelie bins. They have drilled through the rim of the lid and the rim of the bin so the holes line up and they secure it with a bicycle chain and lock. They must have got tired of random people putting stuff in - or their neighbours.

Slimthistime · 11/07/2017 10:55

OMD. I can't believe how many people think this is okay!
Also a bit stunned that a council has an "any bin" policy.
Just carry the dog shit home already.
I would get a bin lock OP. They might leave it on your bin - are you ever around to see them? Hopefully they won't go that far.

YellowLawn · 11/07/2017 11:00

4 it's not your bin it belongs to the council

I pay for the bin to be picked up.
I also pay (twice a year or so) for the bin to be cleaned so that it doesn't stink.
it's not my problem that there are not many public bins. your dog, deal with it's shit yourself. take it home to your own bin or get rid of the dog.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 11/07/2017 11:04

YNBU OP.

Get yourself a bin lock. Lazy twat will have to find someone else's bin to chuck it in next time.

Stressedout10 · 11/07/2017 11:07

By an any bin policy I should say any general waste bin not recycling or composting bin ,would never use those ones.
We have a really bad council this policy alows them to remove public bins and still claim that there is enough for purpose bit of a joke really

PainfullyShy · 11/07/2017 11:10

My bins are under my open kitchen windows, I have two dogs and their waste goes in the bins (and will be there for the fortnight) and I can't smell it once the bin lids are down. I am happy for dog walkers to use my bins. Better that then leaving it for the local kids to step in.
Far too many people have no tolerance anymore.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 11/07/2017 11:18

Dog poo stinks, yes it does matter. A bin is not just a bin.

Agreed. DCs school is behind woods. So you get all the dogwalkers passing by and dumping their dog poo in the bin outside the school because carrying it a dew more yards is too much hassle. Hmm

Standing by it if you're waiting for a lift on a hot day is disgusting. 😷

So if it stinks that bad in a public bin I can imagine the stench a wheelie bin has.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 11:21

The good thing about this thread is that I now know some people don't give a shit (no pun intended Grin) about dog poo stinking out their bin. Maybe if others, like the op and me, who don't fancy drinking in the smell of someone else's dog's shit every time they open their bin, (or, if it's particularly ripe, every time they walk past their bin, which is every day, a few times a day for me), gets a bin lock, then there will still be plenty of bins to use, what with all the people who don't mind at all.

LurkingHusband · 11/07/2017 11:36

I would suggest a bin lock. But I would also warn the OP to get used to little black bags of dog shit left neatly by their (now locked) bin.
