To really dislike Andy Murray?

I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

Glad to see the love for Andy, I think he is refreshingly normal unlike a lot of the so called celebrities, he hasn't sold his soul at the alter of OK magazine, a very good role model especially his views on women's equal pay etc, his work ethic & dedication should be admired.
I think Roger Federer is an amazing tennis player, so elegant on the court, but find him annoyingly smug & also quite patronising, don't get the love for Rafa, can't bear watching his antics on his serve & I think he looks a bit like a chipmunk.
Tennis players of pervious eras loved Stefan Edberg, Andre Agassi, liked to watch Tim Henman as I enjoyed the serve&volley game a lot more than some of the boring baseliner/massive serves.

icedtea · 08/07/2017 17:23

Your are unreasonable. I think Andy Murray is a great tennis player.

RortyCrankle · 08/07/2017 17:45

A young Henri Leconte was not only lovely to look at, but also a really entertaining player. I cannot stand the sight of Nadal, there is something deeply strange about him. Actually none of today's players are a patch on the oldies.

Back in the 1970's you used to be able to sleep on the pavement the night before the men's final, and the next morning, they would hand out numbered tickets which meant you could drive home, shower, change and go back in time for the final. The seats either side of Centre Court were reserved for us overnighters. I watched what I think was the best tennis ever every year.

I really don't enjoy watching Wimbledon much at all these days. When Jimmy Connors played, he did EVERYTHING to return the ball, sometimes even throwing himself or his racquet at it. It was terrific entertainment. Nowadays they just watch the ball sail past them with a bored look on their face. Sad

Deploycharitygoats · 08/07/2017 17:47

I met him through work around ten years ago now. He'd just received some crap news about an injury but he couldn't have been more polite.

Actually, he made me laugh too. I'd been completely absorbed in what I was doing when he approached my desk, so when I looked up, he was standing right in front of me. I jumped, and then had to crane my neck up to make eye contact. I managed something terribly original like "Christ, you're tall!" And with a completely straight face he said "that's very true... but you are sitting down." Daft, but the delivery really tickled me.

dontcallmelen · 08/07/2017 17:52

@Rorty agree about Rafa I don't know what it is, but he's odd & yy Jimmy Connors & McEnroe always entertaining.

leghoul · 08/07/2017 17:53

I find him impossible very hard to like

Littlewhistle · 08/07/2017 18:04

I don't really like Andy Murray or Roger Federer. Somehow I'm supposed to want Murray to win because I'm Scottish Hmm and I just wish Federer would retire as I'm fed up seeing him year after year.

I like Nadal and Dimitrov is really the only one I could describe as attractive.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/07/2017 18:06

RortyCrankle

Nowadays they just watch the ball sail past them with a bored look on their face.

Confused Yes, absolutely... Here's Dimitrov doing just that

AmIthatbloodycold · 08/07/2017 18:11

Now Grigor Dimitrov - there's a sexy player Smile

RortyCrankle · 08/07/2017 18:12

A perfect example The OnlyLivingBoy

While I'm having a moan, I don't enjoy women's tennis either, far too many grunts for not much result for some of them.

buggerthebotox · 08/07/2017 18:13

It's all so bloody negative. Serve, baseline, baseline, baseline until one of them makes an error.

At least they used to PLAY in the old days.

Just watched Djokovic: so, so boring.

Diamondlife · 08/07/2017 18:31

Oh women's tennis is yawn tastic, & as for the Williams sisters, I'm fed up looking at them.
Please retire.

RortyCrankle · 08/07/2017 18:41

Watch it and weep - we'll never see tennis like it again - top 5 shots, two from Connors.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 08/07/2017 18:57

& as for the Williams sisters, I'm fed up looking at them.

Whereas I hope they play on forever. 🏆

buggerthebotox · 08/07/2017 19:20

Edberg? Meh.

Now Adriano Panatta (see link posted above).....phwoarr.

AmIthatbloodycold · 08/07/2017 19:20

I preferred Mats, he was more edgy

I like him on Eurosport. He's still hot

BoysofMelody · 08/07/2017 19:27

& as for the Williams sisters, I'm fed up looking at them.

What is it about their appearance that bothers you?

Yeah fucking awful isn't it? I mean how fucking dare they not be dainty, middle&-class and white.

How dare they succeed in a sport that is riven with class and race barriers to dominated by those who had wealthy parents and expert coaching since they could toddle, whereas they learned to play on public courts in Compton, LA.

They've been the dominant force in the women's game for nearly 2 decades, but what does that matter, when what's really important in women's tennis is being thin and hot enough to appear in a bikini on the cover of sports illustrated and being able to sell products via endorsements.

Theirs is one of the greatest achievements in any sport, let alone tennis, but you're fed up looking at them?

mydogisthebest · 08/07/2017 19:44

Buggerthebotox, I agree that tennis today is not a patch on what it used to be.

As I said before, I slept on the pavement for 5 years running to watch Bjorn Borg and loved a lot of the players then - Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Nastase, Tanner. Some great tennis and great characters.

I like watching rallies not unreturnable serves all the time.

BoysofMelody, quite a few posters have named players they don't like so why pick out the Williams sisters for your attack?

I can't stand either of them and it is nothing to do with them being black, not thin, not pretty etc.

Yes they are good players but no I do not like watching them. I also personally don't think they come across as very likeable in interviews

BoysofMelody · 08/07/2017 19:51

Because I'm fed up looking at them. implies physical unease or disgust.

BoysofMelody · 08/07/2017 19:52

And if you can't acknowledge the enormity of their achievement, then you really aren't a tennis fan.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 08/07/2017 20:01

I'm just happy I lived through the Wonder Years of Borg, McEnroe, Nastase, Connors and Lendl!! Today's kids don't know the thrill of Wimbledon and never will!!!🤣

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 08/07/2017 20:03

Ah feck...totally forgot Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova!!! (Yes, I promise I'm a feminist!!)

mydogisthebest · 08/07/2017 20:05

Of course I realise their achievements but it doesn't mean I have to like them.

I will make a shocking confession now that I am not really very keen on womens' tennis at all. I did like watching Chris Evert, Virginia Wade and Martina Navratilova but never found their matches anywhere near as thrilling as the mens.
