To really dislike Andy Murray?

I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

This is probably his last Wimbledon anyway so it doesn't really matter anymore.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/07/2017 07:01

I certainly perceived your comments as xenophobic

Seriously? You're seeing things that aren't there. I don't dislike AM because he's Scottish, I don't think Scottish people are drunks, violent or tight-fisted (more stereotypes). Maybe using the phrase 'racial stereotypes' was wrong but it was bloody 5 in the morning and I can't think how else to describe it....cultural stereotypes maybe?

I don't even think all Scottish people are dour, just that AM seems that way to me. People on here have assured me he isn't, so I will pay more attention to his interviews in future, I'm open to have my mind changed.

Wherethewild. Looking at some old threads it's clear the majority think the same.

I got banned by the Daily Mail for being rather vocal in my defence of Andy in the comments section

I also avoid the tennis thread on Mn in case I go too far with one particular poster and get banned from here GrinGrin

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/07/2017 07:05

Banned by the Daily Fail? That's something to be proud of surely? If the Mail hate him he can't be all bad. And some of the ice has melted after reading his comment about the Williams sisters medals.

People often dislike what they either don't understand or can't relate to. I'm a fan, I think his sense of humour rocks. He's not anti English (another misunderstood joke that his haters cling to), and he's certainly not miserable, just very dry.

Come on Andy!

AmIthatbloodycold · 08/07/2017 07:19

Thanks Mygast I am rather proud of that Grin

Check out little Ant and Dec interviewing him.

dresdenshepherdess · 08/07/2017 07:27

I really like Andy Murray. Sharp and dry sense of humour. Doesn't feel the need to play the media circus. Keeps his private life pretty private. Remember seeing their wedding photos and thinking there are two people who look incredibly happy to be married to each other.

bumblingbovine49 · 08/07/2017 08:09

Op. I think you are getting a hard time here. You said you couldn't warm to him and that is OK to an extent. However I would take it as an opportunity to notice your prejudices (absolutely everyone has them). You have already admitted you prefer players you think of as good looking. I think that is interesting and is a normal prejudice many people have.

We can all be subject to the style over substance prejudice sometimes. Of course you can like some people less than others but it is sometimes worth challenging yourself as to why that is, which in fairness I think you are doing.

I always struggled a bit to like AM in the past because of his outward manner but this thread has changed my mind. I love that humour I have seen in some of the links. The strawberries one in particular. All these sports people drones (with cream with a slightly naughty look because obviously cream is so bad- yawn ) then Tim "with my fingers!". Am still chuckling.

Also his attitude to women and women players has clinched it. So thanks MN. I have learned something new and am now officially an AM fan where I was distinctly like warm before.

OK, here's some links to change your mind:

Here's Murray correcting John Inverdale:

VeryButchyRestingFace · 08/07/2017 08:43

Here's Murray correcting John Inverdale

He certainly looks amused in that clip, no doubt the dawning realisation of an indisputable fact washing over him: John Inverdale is an insufferable prat.

Marion Bartoli and Steve Redgrave also arrived at the same conclusion, although Redgrave was slightly less diplomatic than Muzza. 🌂 Grin 🌂 Grin

AnyFucker · 08/07/2017 09:01

I hope you do change your mind, gast

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 08/07/2017 09:06

I've ended up really enjoying this thread. Love all the clips.

I love Andy Murray. I met him once and he was so nice to my son who was completely overwhelmed at meeting his hero he could hardly speak.

I find him really hard to watch sometimes though. I was roaring at the tv last night in the fourth set. Great entertainment but I nearly needed a lie down afterwards.

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 08/07/2017 09:08

I don't get the love for Federer at all. It may be partly because he doesn't seem to sweat so I have a theory he's a robot. I do love Murray, he seems like a genuinely decent man.

Amanduh · 08/07/2017 09:11

Yanbu. Everyone has people they dislike despite not knowing them!

themueslicamel · 08/07/2017 09:14

I can't warm to him either OP

YANBU

mydogisthebest · 08/07/2017 09:19

I laughed at the post saying they thought Andy was boring and Federer all the way. Oh yes Federer the most boring man at Wimbledon if not in the world.

I actually think Andy is fairly attractive. I find him more attractive than Nadal. Nadal has a funny lopsided face and he is an extremely annoying player to watch. All that pulling on the sleeve of his top and looking like he his pulling his pants out of his arse! So unattractive. My sister can't bear to watch him because he annoys her so much

I must admit I first got interested in tennis because of Bjorn Borg (swoon) but I was only 17 at the time. I slept on the pavement outside Wimbledon for 5 years running to see Bjorn play and win.

I also used to swoon over Roscoe Tanner (anyone remember him?). He had the best legs in tennis ever.

derxa · 08/07/2017 09:21

Love Federer though. Yer aff yer heid!

FatGirlWithChocolate · 08/07/2017 09:26

I think Nadal is a fairly troubled man..the routine he thinks he has to go through before each new round of shots (touching/pulling things in a specific order) is painful to watch once you are aware of it. I feel very sorry for him..It's not healthy at all.

WomblingThree · 08/07/2017 09:27

There are lots of threads on here about "celebrities you loathe". Why does St Andy need to be protected from it?

Also, plenty of self-professed Scots have referred to themselves/AM on this thread as "dour" so why is the OP xenophobic for using it? Lots of people looking to be offended as usual.

AnyFucker · 08/07/2017 09:28

Nadal is looking very aged these days. He doesn't look like a well man.

dementedma · 08/07/2017 09:39

I find him both boorish and dull, but he's a great player and I hope he does well.
Its his mother that sets my teeth on edge. She craves the very publicity he shuns and is a total media junkie. Thousands of parents have produced, supported and sacrificed for their sporting offspring but dont make such a bloody fuss about it. Can anyone name or recognise Johnny Wilkinson's mum? Sir Steve Redgrave's? Jessica Ennis'?

buggerthebotox · 08/07/2017 09:42

Oooh....i remember Roscoe Tanner! Wasn't he the one with the giant serve, who went over 100mph for the first time?
