To really dislike Andy Murray?

I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

He's the only top male player that has advocated for equal pay for women players.

My favourite Andy Murray moment was when the crass bumbling idiot that is John Inverdale said to him, "You're the only tennis player to have won two Olympic gold medals", and without blinking, Murray replied, "I think Venus and Serena have got about four each."

Because, unlike Inverdale, Murray genuinely believes that women are people.

I feel like that about Roger Federer quite honestly. Too sweet to be wholesome. Who wears white sports gear with their own initials embroidered in gold thread...I mean, seriously? Hmm
I ❤ Andy Murray. Passionate, emotional, extremely hard working, loving family man, dry soh, made the Daily Mail et al eat their words...what's not to love?

Onthehighseas · 08/07/2017 00:13

I think he always comes across as a decent human being. Not one for the soundbite or sharing his private life, and all the nicer for that.

MissEliza · 08/07/2017 00:15

I'm

thelikelylass · 08/07/2017 00:19

I agree. Cannot stand him.

limitedperiodonly · 08/07/2017 00:36

Dour - it's such a cliche to describe a Scottish person. What kind of lazy-arse person uses it?

He's droll, clever, politically and socially aware, a loving family person and world number one.

I think that's pretty good.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/07/2017 00:43

I have huge respect for him. Hard working, feminist, does a tremendous amount for charity, able to take the piss out of himself...what's not to love?

Hueandcry · 08/07/2017 00:50

YABU I ❤ Andy Murray & I hope he wins Wimbledon. He's a fine human being & all round genuinely nice guy. You don't know him.

ExplodedCloud · 08/07/2017 01:24

bridget normally you'd ask for multiple posts to be deleted. But in this case? No.
Andy Murray seems like an ordinary, slightly awkward bloke. He could be the office admin chap. He has worked bloody hard to develop his natural ability and he's actually done bloody well at it. He seems awfully British and it seems harsh to judge his ability through the media lens.
I like his ordinariness in the light of his extraordinary achievements.

Lynnm63 · 08/07/2017 03:04

I don't like him, I always thought it was just me. In my defence I don't like him winning or losing so I'm not one of those he's British when he's winning and Scottish when he loses.
I smile when he loses but my ds likes him and winds me up when he wins.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/07/2017 05:09

Limited period only I'm sorry you think I'm a lazy arse but he does come across as dour. I don't think it's because he's Scottish (I'd never resort to racial stereotyping)

I think he's a focus of anti-Scottish feeling in places like the Daily Mail and they hang a whole load of Scottish clichés on him, like being dour, having a monotone voice (when it is simply a quality of the accent where he grew up), being bad tempered etc.

Also, I don't think the tennis establishment have forgiven him for succeeding despite rather than because of them. I also get the posh southern English types who hoover centre court tickets in their heart of hearts wished he was more like serial choker Tim Henman who they considered 'one of us'.

Pombearsandnaiceham · 08/07/2017 05:37

Just popping on here to share the Andy Murray love - I think he's fab! ❤️

All of the previous posters (even on this page alone) have summed up my feelings nicely, I think! He's definitely an inspiration.

Will be so happy if he wins Wimbledon for a third time next week Smile

(Disclaimer: I'm not Judy or Kim - promise! Wink Just a rather excited Wimbledon fan!)

BoysofMelody · 08/07/2017 05:39

mygast

What 'race' are Scottish people then?

I certainly perceived your comments as xenophobic, as it plays on a well established stereotype associated with being Scottish, the. humourless, joyless, penny pinching self-denying Presbyterian. The flip side being that other Scottish stereotype of the violent aggressive, English-hating drunk.

The problem is that you've not stopped to think why it is almost exclusively or at the very least disproportionately large numbers of Scottish people are described as dour (a label applied to Gordon Brown, Alec Ferguson, along with Andy Murray).

PeachPearPotato · 08/07/2017 05:48

Do you prefer a more slapstick sense of humour OP?

He's just a nice, ordinary, socially awkward guy with a very dry, self deprecating sense of humour.. THIS

I would trust Andy Murray; he couldn't lie to you if his life depended on it. Self depreciating, modest, least disingenuous 'celeb' out there.

BellsaRinging · 08/07/2017 05:55

I like him. But I love love love Judy Murray more. Amazing woman.

BoysofMelody · 08/07/2017 06:05

Yes her womb has produced more Wimbledon champions than the LTA.

Pombearsandnaiceham · 08/07/2017 06:06

Very true Boys! 😂 Judy Murray is pretty amazing, I agree. I like Kim too.

AmIthatbloodycold · 08/07/2017 06:17

YANBU to like or dislike whoever you want

I can't stand Nadal, he turns my stomach.

Love Andy though. What's not to like about him Grin

wherethewildthingis · 08/07/2017 06:25

I love him - I actually do like his personality. His facebook is brilliant and funny, when he won his medals one of the first things he did was put them on his dogs , exactly what I would have done. But, his personality isn't the point at all.

I remember reading about him, when the "miserable" stuff was being spouted in 2013- "what do people want? A world class tennis champion, or Mr Bloody Tumble?" Sums it up for me.

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/07/2017 06:43

Yabu.

Ever since discovering he narrowly missed being a victim of the Dumblane massacre, I've looked at him in a very different light.

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/07/2017 06:44

*Dunblane

KathyBeale · 08/07/2017 06:53

I agree that dour is a very lazy description for someone Scottish.

I love Andy Murray. Because actually what's not to love? He is such a good role model too.

I dislike Federer because I think he's a terrible loser (unless he loses in a final - then he's fine. Earlier than that and he's horrible). And Rafa spends way too much time hoiking his shorts out of his bum for my liking. Makes me feel ill. Plus I think he's a bit unsportsmanlike too.
