To really dislike Andy Murray?

I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

Bugger looks like Nastase but I'm guessing not?

kitkat321 · 07/07/2017 22:16

As a fellow dour Scot with a dry sense of humour I live him.

He's not the most dynamic personality but he's hard working, determined, does a lot to raise the profiles of charities and doesn't take himself too seriously.

There's also no scandal and I never feel he's being fake like Federer or Djokovic.

The80sweregreat · 07/07/2017 22:17

Very, sorry! I forgot about his doubles win in 2012
He is alright.
( wish i could play any sport)

ephemeralfairy · 07/07/2017 22:18

YABU. I love him. And it's not to do with him being a Brit. I hated Tim Henman with a fiery passion.

RolfNotRudolf · 07/07/2017 22:18

Well said MsHooolie

AnyFucker · 07/07/2017 22:19

I love Andy Murray

He is bloody hard to watch though

He always has a dip in the 3rd or 4th set and then pulls it back. Like today.

ItsNachoCheese · 07/07/2017 22:20

gast sir andy murray is such a legend theres a gold postbox in his honour in dunblane (ive seen it its pretty cool Grin)

IrregularCommentary · 07/07/2017 22:22

Oh, I think he's great. Yeah, he doesn't play to the cameras, but I bet he's bloody good fun to hang around with if you're a friend of his.

He's clearly got a great sense of humour.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/07/2017 22:23

Yes, he wins the first 2 sets handily, switches into cruise and his mind goes off Walzing Matilda. 😥

It's a nonsense that sports journalists ask inane questions and are randomly bothering people.

On the whole sports journalists don't ask stupid questions. They are generally very knowledgable, having gone into sports journalism from a teenage career in sport that hasn't made the grade.

The problem on a newspaper is that sometimes they go native and are too soft rather than the other way around. They miss the point of the story and love tagging on to international tours too much. Or maybe they're looking for a book deal or just want to be friends with the interview subject - that's the saddest thing. Some of these comments are making me think of that

I have a selfie of me embracing it. Blush

I was staying at the Hydro for work, lest anyone think I made a special journey to hug a postbox. Angry

TrinityTaylor · 07/07/2017 22:25

@twattymctwatterson erm, no, calm down pal, I never said the two were comparable, my post was statement on how, rightly or wrongly, the media and public do not always take into account the past traumas someone in the public eye has suffered and acknowledge them when deciding if they like them/support them in a pop-culture context. Kim K was an example of the most recent, populist version of this. What happened to her is not the same as Dunblane. But what I'm saying is that people don't always have to "like" some one (whatever that means, could be support in a sport, think they're good entertainment, talented at what they do, whatever) because of some obligation or sympathy.
Look at David Cameron. I see huge amounts of vitriol towards him, I won't go into my political views not a Tory though! I saw many posts on here saying that despite his child dying at a young age (nightmarish) he deserved that vitriol, as did his wife. Because people did not feel they had to like or be supportive of him despite of his trauma. Obviously a tennis player is not the same as a politician, but I think I can see the parallel in it.

I digress. I think the "he might have Aspergers" argument is also annoying. So what? He might have Aspergers and be a twat, he might have Aspergers and be a fabulous person. Aspergers does not mean a person is void of blame and should be liked be every one despite their own personality/likes and disklikes.

I cried for him when he first won Wimbledon and climbed all over the stands. Throughout the match I shouted: 'Go Andy! Go Andy!' and startled the cat by whirling him around the room.

Last year was an altogether more sedate affair and the cat remained unmolested Grin

RortyCrankle · 07/07/2017 22:35

I don't dislike him but can't stand watching him play.

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 07/07/2017 22:35

article. Despite hosting the world's biggest tennis tournament, Britain has been catastrophically shit at tennis for about the last 50 years. We now have the tennis player ranked number one in the world and people are complaining that he doesn't smile enough.
The whole point of sport is to win and he's the first British tennis player to have actually won Grand slam titles and the Olympics in most people's living memory but people don't like him because he looks a bit grumpy and has a monotone voice? That really demonstrates how we've become obsessed with style over substance.

This sums up what I've been trying to articulate in my own head while reading the thread. Andy is amazingly talented, works so hard, is professional, dedicated, loves his family, does masses for charity quietly in the background and is recognised as one of the best players in the world - and yet that's not enough??? He simply must be a twinkly eyed, all singing and dancing soundbite specialist too.
Sod that.
I'll take titles, Olympic medals and world number 1, all with no controversy or failed drug tests over "plucky losers Tim Wanky Henman" or media darling.
OP YABVVVVVU.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/07/2017 22:37

Yes, I cried too. 😢

And at USO.

And London 2012.

Diamondlife · 07/07/2017 22:41

Yanbu.
He's not English anyway, he's Scottish.

thelonelyhamster · 07/07/2017 22:41

I love him... anytime he's on tv he's happy to make fun of himself, and he's usually doing it while trying not to burst out laughing. He smiles a lot really. Did none of you see the davis cup interview from 2015 where he was literally doubled over laughing having made a comment to wind up one of his teammates?

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 22:54

Rednails I think I agreed to this several posts ago (although maybe I didn't have quite so many Vs)

While I was totally wrapped up with Tim love I was a bit Hmm when he was nominated for Sports Personality of the Year...as if being good but not quite good enough should be celebrated.

I think it is his dour-ness I don't like, I also don't like 'perky' people or people who describe themselves as 'kooky' or 'whacky' (but does anyone?)

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 07/07/2017 23:13

I know you did, I've read the thread, I'm simply voicing my opinion, just as you did in your OP.

bridgetreilly · 07/07/2017 23:38

There was a documentary about him a couple of years ago presented by Sue Barker. He came across as lovely, funny and very genuine. She asked him about the Dunblane shooting, and he wanted to talk about it, but couldn't do it without crying and holding his dog.

I love how real and deep his emotions are, and when he's not, you know, DOING HIS JOB, he lets them show plenty. Like when he lost in the Wimbledon final. And when he's won. And when he's bantering with his mum and his brother.

#GOANDY!

bridgetreilly · 07/07/2017 23:41

*And an Olympic medal too

Two Olympic Golds, actually.*

Two Olympic golds and a silver, in fact. ;)

ssd · 07/07/2017 23:43

Tim Henman gies me the dry boak

Huckleshmuckle · 07/07/2017 23:45

While I was totally wrapped up with Tim love...

Still amused that he provoked such lustful feelings 😬 Did he have a lot of admirers who felt similarly?
