I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

Thanks Bugger
I'm a Bjorn Borg girl, with Vitas Gerulaitas as second choice - thats how long ago I last played attention to W'don

scaryclown · 07/07/2017 21:57

Do you feel entitled to be entertained by him, or for him to make himself attractive to you?

randomsabreuse · 07/07/2017 21:57

He was very funny on Mock the Week after he lost the final and the following year after he won.

Doesn't take himself too seriously off court.

Comes across similar to the serious competitors in most one vs one sports - my own competition personality is very different to my normal behaviour (and I don't really like competition me!)

VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/07/2017 21:58

Gutted Del Potro go knocked out and still haven't forgiven AM for bageling him in the French Open

The Olympic final was so ❤️ rending.

Why does tennis have to be so cruel?? 😭

RolfNotRudolf · 07/07/2017 21:59

Vitas G died over 20 years ago Shock

PrimalLass · 07/07/2017 21:59

Love him to bits. I have two, Scottish, tennis-mad kids and he is a huge inspiration.

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 22:01

rolf ah yes Gerulaitis! Confession time: I was a Nastase girlBlush. Now that was one naughty man still is, by all accounts.

Gentlysnoring · 07/07/2017 22:01

How mean and unpleasant. "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say it at all...."

VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/07/2017 22:02

I actually have inside information. But clearly I can't say any more than that.

Sure you do.

No doubt that winsome discretion of yours is the reason you announced it on a public message board.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 22:02

Unlike you I don't have a tail. Defensive much? And who the fuck decided he was our 'national hero?' Hmm

AM doesn't have a duty to do anything for me, entertain or be attractive for me. I've admitted IABU, what more do you want from me? Blood?

Yes Bugger Nasty Nastase - then and now. Was amazed to hear he is still alive on news recently.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 22:03

Careful Butchy she'll tell you to tuck off too!

@TrinityTaylor are you genuinely comparing an adult Kim Kardashian being robbed to being a small child and having to hide in the store cupboard in your classroom whilst 17 people you know are murdered down the hall? Fucking hell

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 22:06

rolf yes, I remember that. Arthur Ashe too. Sad.

I think back in the old days the players stood out more, somehow. Maybe because the sport was still amateur, or newly professional back then. Apparently Rod Laver won a tenner at Wimbledon, as Champ back in the 60s. He bought a tennis shirt!!

limitedperiodonly · 07/07/2017 22:06

who can forget Ivanisevic and Rafter? Best match ever, surely?

I interviewed Pat Rafter at the French Open just before that Wimbledon buggerthebotox.

I'm not a sports journalist - he was obliged to do interviews as part of his sponsorship by Reebok. Really friendly, amusing and so good looking. Also wise and pragmatic about the game.

He was talking about Pete Sampras and explained that while he might not be as talented, he was very fit, worked hard, was lucky with injuries and had a strong mental attitude which can lift you against a more gifted player on the day.

He also gave good quotes about his mate Mark Philipoussis and his wife Lara who sound like a lot of fun too, which is all any journalist can wish for. As a result, I really wanted him to win that day. But looking back, I'm glad Ivanisovic did.

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 22:09

Lucky you, limited. Envy.

RolfNotRudolf · 07/07/2017 22:10

Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Yvonne Goolagong, Billy Jean King, Chris Evett, Tracey Austin ... those were the days my friend ...

The80sweregreat · 07/07/2017 22:12

At least he has won a major tournament, twice. And the US open once. And an Olympic medal too.
In Scottish/ English terms this is good news!
I'll take this and i think most sport is pointless!
( wonders when England will ever win the world cup again? )

LittleBeautyBelle · 07/07/2017 22:13

Thought the same thing today and then see this on mn. I dislike him too. Can't stand him...not sure why...

I dislike him in the same way I dislike Toby McGuire the actor (sp?) and Andrew Garfield, actor.

Wish I knew why actually...the three of them invoke in me a kind of dislike or contempt or repulsion or something, not even sure of the emotion or why.

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 22:13

What about this vision of gorgeousness?

To really dislike Andy Murray?
VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/07/2017 22:14

And an Olympic medal too

Two Olympic Golds, actually.

The only male tennis player to win consecutive gold medals.

Huckleshmuckle · 07/07/2017 22:15

I dislike him in the same way I dislike Toby McGuire the actor (sp?)

I'm with you on that one. It's the curled lip and the cold glassy eyes.

LittleBeautyBelle · 07/07/2017 22:15

And I don't judge based on how someone looks or anything and it's more their manner, not their looks anyway...so am mystified by my gut reaction to them....weird.

MsHooliesCardigan · 07/07/2017 22:15

Tyne I totally agree with that Charlie Brooker article. Despite hosting the world's biggest tennis tournament, Britain has been catastrophically shit at tennis for about the last 50 years. We now have the tennis player ranked number one in the world and people are complaining that he doesn't smile enough.
The whole point of sport is to win and he's the first British tennis player to have actually won Grand slam titles and the Olympics in most people's living memory but people don't like him because he looks a bit grumpy and has a monotone voice? That really demonstrates how we've become obsessed with style over substance.
Andy has made numerous TV appearances including Outnumbered and Comic Relief as well as the ones that PPs have linked to where he is obviously happy to take the piss out of himself and has an amazingly dry sense of humour. I saw him interviewed by some kids on Newsround last week who asked him what his highlight of last year was and he was very clear that it was the birth of his daughter and he couldn't keep the grin off his face when he was talking about her.
He's a brilliant role model of someone who works his arse off.
But there are so many people who would seem to prefer someone who gets knocked out in the quarter finals every year but is happy to appear in OK magazine posing with their wife and children in their beautiful home?

LittleBeautyBelle · 07/07/2017 22:15

Yes! Huckle !!
