Charlie Gard case

AIBU to feel the drama over this poor little boy is not helpful? I read the Pope and Donald Trump were suggesting they help- when several courts have agreed it is in his best interests to let the little boy die with dignity. I feel sorry for him as he may be in pain and it is unfair to add further to false hope for the parents as well. I also feel that many, many people has awful situations where babies die, sadly, for example stillbirths and other cases which are just un-heard and un-noticed and people have to deal with it, so why is there such a huge focus here.

Hippo so sorry to hear your story 😔 absolutely heartbreaking. And to everyone else who have shared their stories on here or chosen not to, my heart goes out to you all

Carriemac · 06/07/2017 15:19

Hippo that is truly putting your child first and acting in their best interest - this current news story must be so distressing to you and many brave parents around the world.

mydogisthebest · 06/07/2017 15:25

Hippo, so sorry for your loss.

RMC123 · 06/07/2017 15:26

Hippo so sorry for your loss. Flowers

Apparently a group of MEPs have signed a letter in support of Charlie's parents. I really wonder if they have been given the full facts.

Maudlinmaud · 06/07/2017 15:33

For all the parents who have been in this situation Flowers

I think Charlies parents genuinely believe that he should be allowed treatment, however futile that may be, or that he should be allowed to leave hospital and die at home or in a hospice. Anywhere but GOSH. As an outsider and not being emotionally involved I can see why that isn't possible. But I will not judge them. Seeing someone you love suffering can make you think all sorts of things.

alltouchedout · 06/07/2017 15:40

I have immense sympathy with the parents but I do think, as pp have said, it's important not to lose sight of the fact that this is about Charlie, not them.

Hippo I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hippo so sorry to hear your sad story. But you did the right thing for your child. And your beautiful baby will always be with you in your heart. If only Charlie's parents could be as brave and clear sighted as you.

The CA mantra,"If he's still fighting, we're still fighting," is beginning to irritate me intensely.

It is quite clear that this poor child is NOT fighting and probably never has been. Time to let him go.

Oogle · 06/07/2017 16:16

Ellie, the mantra is upsetting me actually. Poor Charlie is unable to fight.

Hippo, I am so sorry for your loss.

I have previously said how much sympathy I have for the parents and the heartbreaking situation they are in.

CA and the media circus with "stars" jumping on the 'save Charlie' bandwagon, the selling of merchandise and the protests? No, I can't get my head around it and I cannot begin to put into words my outrage at the treatment of GOSH.

Linda Robson is apparently joining the protest tonight and CA have asked if someone can explain Charlie's case properly to her as she's under the impression he needs an operation. Hmm

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/07/2017 16:18

I'm genuinely not sure any more if the objectors have chosen not to read the full judgements/medical facts ... or if they lack the intellectual capacity to understand ... or if they know perfectly well what they say and just don't care

Again and again and again it's been explained why it wouldn't help Charlie to be taken to America, why home care isn't appropriate and why medical science can no longer help him, and still the same objections are raised as if these points had never been addressed at all

As so many PPs have said, for some it really doesn't seem to be about poor Charlie any more Sad

MrGrumpy01 · 06/07/2017 16:18

It is a truly saddening situation. I hope the family have people they can rely on for actual support at this time.

Total · 06/07/2017 16:19

For those uncertain of how Charlie's disease could possibly cause pain, this was one judge's findings:

"The GOSH team believe that Charlie can probably experience pain."

They don't say explicitly he is experiencing pain, but just that he "probably can" just because he's intubated and ventilated.

"Their evidence was that being ventilated, being suctioned, living as Charlie does, are all capable of causing pain."

It's a. It hard to understand as some people are discharged home with ventilation and needing all care, and they don't complain of pain because of it.

Anyway, I hope that clears it up.

DorotheaBeale · 06/07/2017 16:21

CA have asked if someone can explain Charlie's case properly to her

Tell her to read the court judgment! It's all there in simple English!

How can someone join a protest without knowing what it is they're protesting about?!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 06/07/2017 16:24

Myrtle if it didn't out me, I would love to show you pictures of my extremely peaceful looking little girl. The picture I took not long after getting her back from her third arrest, looks so peaceful but I gurantee you she was in pain.

Stopnamechanging · 06/07/2017 16:31

This is from the European court of appeal judgement

It said: “The domestic courts had concluded, on the basis of extensive, high-quality expert evidence, that it was most likely Charlie was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress and that undergoing experimental treatment with no prospects of success would offer no benefit, and continue to cause him significant harm.”

Maudlinmaud · 06/07/2017 16:46

I've just seen video footage of the protests. I'm all for a good protest but if there are less than ten individuals it looks a bit pathetic. Where is everyone?

JaneEyre70 · 06/07/2017 17:02

It's rather alarming that people are still donating money to their go fund me page - are people really that stupid that they think someone's going to just pop him on a flight from Heathrow and take him to the US to see the miracle Doctor? Surely it needs to be closed down after that final ruling or the cause changed? Some people donated their life savings thinking they were helping a dying child get a magical cure Sad

SilverLining17 · 06/07/2017 17:08

What a surprise. Corbyn is supporting CA and Charlie's case. Could it be because he recognises it as a vote winner I wonder.
He's popular on mumsnet but frankly he makes my skin crawl and he's no better than Donald trump for using this to score political points.

MudCity · 06/07/2017 17:19

Flowers Hippo

Beautiful, eloquent post, said with dignity.

MorrisZapp · 06/07/2017 17:22

Wtf? Corbyn? Is there a link to this?

Redglitter · 06/07/2017 17:25

One of the CA posted that they can't wait for Charlie to read all this in years to come. They just haven't grasped the situation at all.

DorotheaBeale · 06/07/2017 17:29

Corbyn? Is there a link to this?

Daily Mail, but it does give a pretty good overview of the whole case, and quotes several medical experts who all pretty much agree with GOSH:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4671586/Jeremy-Corbyn-sympathy-fo-Charlie-Gard-s-parents.html

Corbyn, or his advisers, seem to have chosen his words quite carefully, but I think his intervention is unnecessary; it won't achieve anything
