Charlie Gard case

AIBU to feel the drama over this poor little boy is not helpful? I read the Pope and Donald Trump were suggesting they help- when several courts have agreed it is in his best interests to let the little boy die with dignity. I feel sorry for him as he may be in pain and it is unfair to add further to false hope for the parents as well. I also feel that many, many people has awful situations where babies die, sadly, for example stillbirths and other cases which are just un-heard and un-noticed and people have to deal with it, so why is there such a huge focus here.

PacificDogwod · 07/07/2017 11:59

Stiffy, thank you for taking the time to write your very considered post Thanks

I can only imagine what memories and emotions the current controversy must awaken in your family.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 12:01

Stiffy, I don't have the right words, I am so sorry for what you have been through. This must all be very painful to see in the press Flowers

CA pose no real threat in the long term . Morgan Stanley , Mittal steel and the other BN$ corporations won't stop their donation because of a group of mainly illiterate women in facebook post blue hearts and misspelt facts why can't any of them fucking spell

Let's be clear these people pose no risk long term to GOSH

That said it must be unimaginably tense in there . They are court ordered to cease support and the parents won't allow it . What the fuck do you do there ? I don't envy either side / it's unprecedented

Doubledottvremote · 07/07/2017 12:09

Connie on gmtv saying he can lead a normal life just made me realise how much she doesn't understand mitochondrial disease

Redglitter · 07/07/2017 12:12

You follow the court ruling

"CA pose no real threat in the long term"

I so hope you're right, Stop.
There's another case starting to gain some momentum and I do wonder if most of them aren't going to jump on that one too.

Can't read the CA page now for all the blue hearts.

hackmum · 07/07/2017 12:18

The parents, in my view, should be immensely grateful that their son has received top-quality care from hard-working nurses and doctors who have looked after him round the clock for months. All paid for by the taxpayer. Instead they are encouraging an army of ignorant, ill-informed supporters to shout abuse at these professionals and call them murderers. I know it's obligatory to preface any comment about the case with words of sympathy for what the parents must be going through, but I'm afraid the sympathy I felt for them has dissipated rapidly.

That is also my view. This world renowned hospital will not be in the least bit affected by this "publicity" in the long term. Actually, make that the short term.

The vast majority of people know that the CA people are just ignorant in every sense of the word. I'm afraid they are wallowing in this situation. The medics, in contrast, are doing their very best for all those in their care, as they always have and as they always will. Most of us know that.

nina2b · 07/07/2017 12:20

And yes, they follow the court ruling. It has deliberated and reached a proper and right conclusion.

TheWeeWitch · 07/07/2017 12:24

I've just come across a recent picture of Charlie in my FB feed. His appearance has changed significantly, his poor little body looks terribly bloated now. It's so very sad.

DorotheaBeale · 07/07/2017 12:24

I just posted this link on the other thread, and thought it worth reposting here. I found it because I wanted to be a bit better informed so went Googling. I think it's a reputable site.

"Emerging therapies for mitochondrial disorders"
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4892756/

The point I want to make is that I'm not uneducated, but I couldn't understand it (and am not asking any medic to come and explain it). This is the level of knowledge and understanding necessary to challenge the experts.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 12:28

weewitch, indeed. But I saw comments from CA saying things like "look how much he's grown", "it's clear he's thriving and doing well".

Ellie56 · 07/07/2017 12:30

Yes i noticed how bloated he is starting to look. Could this be an indication that other things are going wrong in his body?

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 12:37

There's a difference between not understanding, and not accepting.
I'm in no doubt that the severity and prognosis of Charlie has been spelled out in no uncertain terms to Charlie's parents an immeasurable number of times.

She just doesn't want to believe that a collective global network of medical specialists know more about her Son's condition than she does.

How bizarre that you can't trust the medical advice of any Doctors you disagree with, but you'll put your faith in the hands of a Doctor who'll pat you on the back with one hand, while taking your money with the other.

JaneEyre70 · 07/07/2017 12:40

The bloating is usually heart and/or liver failure. That picture was awful to see this morning, and even worse that Connie was smiling and chatting about his first haircut........ I know that hair will mean a lot to her in future years but I just don't think that they have any grasp on the disease at all sadly.

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 12:42

If you read the latest ramblings from Charlie's Armchair Army, they say that this bloating is a sign he's healthy because he's growing.

Hulder · 07/07/2017 12:43

The GOSH statement says his kidneys are failing - the bloating could be consistent with that as he would be massively retaining fluid. It doesn't look like they have been dialysing him - no tubes in the right places.

So brain damaged, organ damaged, visual damaged - the list goes on and on.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 07/07/2017 12:49

For those who are medically trained. Is it possible that Charlie could die of natural causes before Drs switch of his life support?

DeleteOrDecay · 07/07/2017 12:49

This case is a prime example of why the saying 'parents know best' is dangerous. Some people (mainlyCA) take it far to literally to the point where it defies logic.

Poor Charlie, he doesn't look healthy or happySad

Maudlinmaud · 07/07/2017 12:51

Yes but Conine also mentioned his weight and reinforced he was thriving, so much so that the team has him on a diet. She also said she had done lots of research on his condition but that doesn't mean she knows as much as the doctors. People with rational minds can see the difference.

allowlsthinkalot · 07/07/2017 12:55

Heart or kidney failure would cause bloating :'-(

As someone who started out believing that the parents should be allowed to take him abroad...I have changed my mind.

Rinoachicken · 07/07/2017 12:57

Rhubarb good question, is like to know that as well. Perhaps him passing by himself is a real possibility and then at least GOSH staff may protected from the 'murder' shouters.
