To love my fantasy little house that I live in alone

I love my DP dearly and would not really change anything, but I lived alone for 7 years before we got together and I miss it!
In my mind I have my own fantasy little cottage with a little courtyard garden, I stay in my big bed with loads of decorative pillows and cushions on, drinking out of my beautiful handpainted mug.
I eat whatever I want whenever I want and never have to share it. Everything is decorated entirely to my taste and whims and I treat myself to a lovely cake which is displayed under a glass dome on the kitchen side for me to return to when I want.
Everything is clean and tidy and I have a long bath every evening.
I love my little fantasy - it helps me while away many a walk home from work. Anyone the same?

I have never lived on my own and now that I'm married I am sad that I never will (at least that's the plan so far)

My house would have everything put in the most practical place. Shoes neatly organised by the door, napkins and table linen live near the table, bedding lives near the beds. I would cook small, healthy meals full of veg and spend my evenings pottering about the house. It would be decorated in a bohemian/scandi way with lots of quirky furniture and art. I would have a lovely garden which I would spend my weekends in when I wasn't going to art galleries or hiking the nearby hills. I would have a beautiful 30s style front door, probably red or navy blue.

sigh

My fantasy is a large yet rustic two-storey cabin in Canada. It has fields to one side, a lake to the other, and I can see the treeline of a forest within walking distance. I live there with my SO and my DS (6). In summer, we tend to a small amount geese and hens, collecting eggs and feeding them. We have a small female cow that we milk. I teach my DS to fish, and we care for our two horses. We go rowing in a boat that we all crafted together, we swim in the cool waters and our dog, Darwin the Beagle, doggypaddles beside us. When it snows, and the lake freezes over, we make snowmen and angels, and go ice skating. We make hot chocolate and sip it under blankets in front of a proper fireplace whilst my two cats relax on the rug. We play board games every night, we do jigsaws, and I bake tremendous cakes using home-gathered eggs, butter and milk. Every day we all wake up to sunshine pouring in through the large windows, and our laughter is so joyous it can almost be heard two miles away at the local post office.

Ah well. I've got the man, the boy and the cats at least. No dogs, cows or birds yet...Maybe at 70 when I'm able to finally own my own place.

Oh dear.

I'm looking at these charming cottages and town houses and am ashamed to admit I've been occupying a semi ruined abbey for some years. Blush I hang out in the ruins with a good book and a mug of tea, and periodically wander up to the library to choose another book.
There is a river at the back and a kind of cave type structure in the basement with an underground beach quite nice for swimming. And the cloisters are also rather lovely place to sit, when I'm not in the mood to lounge in the bath against the window upstairs that overlooks the garden.

There is a rather dishy footman who wanders through occasionally, and looks extremely buff with his jacket off. I have no idea where he eats or sleeps or how he manages, but he seems perfectly happy. Most of the time the house is just resonating silence and total lack of anyone else anywhere. The flowers in the vases never go droopy and no one puts muddy footprints everywhere or leaves stuff laying about.

I thought I was the only weirdo who did this!

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 04/07/2017 16:35

I think I am living in your house crochet, I left my ex and set up in a tiny, one bed 16th century cottage with a log burner, a bedroom all to myself and a pretty little secluded courtyard garden that is brimming with pots of flowers.

theredjellybean · 04/07/2017 17:00

friendzone...would you occasionally like to house swap your lovely home on regents park with my cornwall house ?

yellowDahlia · 04/07/2017 17:01

Some of these sound lovely... I also realised just a couple of days ago that I've never lived alone and while I love my DH and DDs, there's a part of me which looks forward to a time at some point in the future when I can be a hermit woman of independence who cares for abandoned pets.

My fantasy home would be my own home, but I know exactly the changes I'd make to it - add lots of french doors, build an extension, lots more glass and windows..and then I'd fill it with foster cats and probably a dog or two as well. I'd never have to put up with shoes - oh, the many, many shoes - that lie around the living room, the dishes, the clutter on every surface...I'd keep it clean and minimal but with some beautiful patterned wallpaper that I would pay a man to put up for me. In fact, I'd pay to have all the rooms decorated properly and put in lovely furniture which is not mismatched, handed down from our parents or found cheap on gumtree.

And just down the road I'd rent or own a bit of land where my alpacas and goats will live. I'll visit them each day with the dog, keep them fed and watered and give them a pat, then wander home again to potter about in the garden until the sun goes down. Bliss.

flapjackfairy · 04/07/2017 17:03

Miss haversham yours sounds like it should be haunted.
Are you sure that footman who drifts through is actually alive ? Thats why you dont know where he lives or sleeps ! Grin

Wheresthattomoibabber · 04/07/2017 17:08

I honestly thought I was the only person who did this! I love this thread.

Mine has no tv but has a radio that will only do R3 & R4. It has a bathroom big enough to have an armchair in.

flapjackfairy · 04/07/2017 17:13

Oh i am getting carried away now!
Questioning whether an imaginary footman is really alive !

SagelyNodding · 04/07/2017 17:14

I can't believe nobody else has a beach house! I have a wonderful six-bedroomed abode on an empty unspoiled bay near Saint-Tropez but with no traffic nearby and no tourists. I spend my mornings surfing or paddle boarding with amazing skill, or take my boat out to spot dolphins. Afternoons are for napping in my hammock with a mojito. In the evenings we have fabulous barbecue parties with occasional live music before retiring to our impeccable white bedroom and fall asleep listening to the waves....

Sigh. I clean houses like this, but will most likely never have one...

RoboticSealpup · 04/07/2017 17:15

Funny with all these 'rural idyll' dreams. I dream of an ultra-modern penthouse in central London where all the walls are made from glass, and I can see everything but nobody can see me...

SagelyNodding · 04/07/2017 17:16

Sorry-I've just spotted at least 2 other fantasy beach house posts!

Gingernaut · 04/07/2017 17:16

I adore my minimalist penthouse apartment in the centre of London and my quirky, terraced townhouse in a quiet but picturesque cobbled mews/alley/cul-de-sac in Bath or Bristol.

I also enjoy the thought of a little flat above a shop in one of the hipster areas of East London.

RoboticSealpup · 04/07/2017 17:17

I also have a tree-house in the jungle.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 04/07/2017 17:18

Flapjack well I didn't like to mention the nuns who walk through the cloister singing a la Call The Midwife ..... Wink

Yes it's definitely haunted by them so the buff footman is very likely a ghost too! I'd say it was a shame, but then it's probably rather telling that my dream house contains a man wandering about who I appreciate dreamily from a distance - and then bugger off to have a cup of tea and read a book. Grin

WaitingfortheMiracle · 04/07/2017 17:20

My fantasy home is a beautiful old vicarage with vast, minimally furnished rooms, and high ceilings. It is decorated in shades of parchment white & palest grey, and sunlight streams through stained-glass windows. My siamese cats and I live very happily and peacefully, whilst invisible housekeeper, chef & gardener tend to my every need. I float thru' the rooms in faded soft silk dresses. Each room is devoted to one of my many interests, e.g. library, cinema, yoga/dance studio, music room, meditation rooms, etc.

No-one EVER takes the last cream cake out of the fridge...

LoveMySituation · 04/07/2017 17:26

Love your fantasy house dementedma. I think I would have that for half the year and the other half would be in a modern flat with floor to ceiling windows with panoramic views of the river Mersey and the Three Graces.

I would have a house rabbit, and maybe a cat (they would get along and curl up together) , I would have won enough on the lottery to be comfortable and I would find a fun, very part time job to be sociable. At night, I would either be out , or sitting on the sofa by the windows watching the sun set over the river and the lights of the city come on.

I've actually found the second one, and keep the details on my phone and look at it often. It hopefully should become reality in a few years

AmberStClare · 04/07/2017 17:28

I have an old and ever so slightly crumbling place on the Grand Canal in Venice. It has a fridge that is always full of Prosecco and cheeky little snacks to tempt my palate. There are Fortuny fabrics everywhere covering the chaise longues which I spend a lot of time drooping around on. In fact I float around in Fortuny gowns when at home all the time and am much thinner so look totally adorable in them.

I have a rather hunky Italian who takes me about in his boat. He knows his place and goes away when I want to be alone to paint or whatever. I am a very accomplished artist as well and thr sale of the odd picture keeps me in drink and clothes.

ChristianGreysAnatomy · 04/07/2017 17:29

I have a small white minimalist one bed flat in Montmartre with a balcony and a beautiful view and stylish crockery and very good quality bed linen and a few books and a record player.

In my dreams.

scampimom · 04/07/2017 17:34

What I like best about our barn conversion is the huge wooden shed at the bottom of the garden (lit by fairy lights all the way down the path). It is shabby chic white paint on wood, and has throw cushions, and a wine fridge, and all my hobby bits and pieces all set up, and a mezzanine level full of books. What's extra nice is that this library is magic, and replenishes itself with new books that it knows I will like.

There is also room for my cats. Natch.

I have a penthouse in a converted mill building within easy walking distance of the centre of a small, posh market town.

I have a housekeeper who pops in to clean so it's always beautiful and she also does the shopping and cooking. She leaves wholesome meals in the kitchen for me to heat up/serve when I fancy eating. She's very discreet so I rarely see her. I think she might actually be a house elf.

I have a rooftop garden which is totally private and no one knows it exists except me and the gardener who maintains it beautifully but I never see him/her either.

I have rugs and cushions everywhere and it is all just perfect.

I also had a large lottery win so I can spend my time pottering around. I give to good causes. I also go travelling a lot - first class of course - in fact the only time my alarm clock ever goes off is when I have a plane to catch.

Sigh!

FlyingSoloFlyingFree · 04/07/2017 17:41

What a lovely thread, I'm newly separated and a bit scared of what the future holds but if it works out like any of these it won't be bad.

Mine would be a little cottage near the sea in Dorset with a courtyard garden and a cosy kitchen overlooking it. I'd have a little shop/studio nearby selling my work (I'm a designer) and other people's for vast sums to gullible tourists Grin.

crochetmonkey69 · 04/07/2017 17:42

Hellhasnofury that sounds amazing!
