I'm just in the mood to watch some and I'd like recommendations.

My contributions are:

Fire Walk With me

I felt afraid and strangely vulnerable for some reason watching this. I was and am a fan of the original series but I did not expect this to be like it was and was very scared while watching lol.

Mysterious Skin

This one I watched when it was broadcast at 1am on Film Four I think and I ended up watching the whole thing at first not knowing what ir was about and by the end I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards. I want to watch it again but I don't know if I can put myself through it.

But both titles are such good films IMO. Anything similar in vein? No spoilers please.

The scariest film I have ever seen was a film with Valerie Harper called Don't go to sleep. I was 18 when I watched it and I'm 52 now and I've never watched it since!!

applespearsbears · 05/07/2017 21:41

Kill list terrified me I got DH to take the DVD out of the house.

NEmum · 05/07/2017 21:53

Dead man's shoes

Dogtooth

StarStarStarStarStar

llangennith · 05/07/2017 21:57

The Ring. Didn't answer the landline for a week after watching this.

Ridingthegravytrain · 05/07/2017 22:07

The loved ones

MorbidBibliomancy · 05/07/2017 22:38

Hush freaked me out a fair bit.

The original Japanese version of The Grudge had me sleeping with the lights on for 6 months. (To be fair, I was about 18 when I first saw it!)

Threads is the only film I've watched multiple times that still scares the living bejeezus out of me. The War Game by Peter Watkins is similar in theme but not quite as terrifying imo.

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 05/07/2017 22:53

The mist the ending gets me every time!

user1495025590 · 05/07/2017 23:26

O I very rarely watch scary films but one that stood out for me was a ghost story c in b&w called ' the innocents' based on ' turn of the screw'

Madwoman5 · 06/07/2017 00:21

Child's Play.
That fecking doll still haunts me

MissionItsPossible · 06/07/2017 00:55

Hi guys. I have just finished watching Eden Lake as one of my must see films and spurred by the recommendations on here. I started it at 23:15 to put me in an extra scared mood but I have just finished it and I found it just ok. Maybe it's because the reviews were praising it but I didn't find it scary or disgusting. I thought it was a good premise but thought the main actress was appalling and hard to take seriously and it was nowhere near disgusting or hard to watch as other previous posters said on this thread. The ending was a little bit twisted though but yeah, from the sound of it I thought I'd need a pillow and the ability to hide when I needed to but nothing of the sort. Next stop I'm gonna check out Get Out and from suggestions here gonna check out Rec after that! Il

I found the road quite disturbing, so much so I only watched the first 10 mins, read the book but couldnt cope with the film

NorthumbrianGirl · 06/07/2017 01:10

I came on to say The Road too! I found it really disturbing.

BoldKitties · 06/07/2017 01:30

In terms of horror films, I do love a good slasher flick - Halloween, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street etc Blush. They are totally awful, but enjoyable. Oh and I also love Hellraiser. DP once got an excellent Pinhead costume for a Halloween party and it really freaked people out.

Properly unsettling films? The Wicker Man. That scene where Sergeant Howie is being led into the Wicker Man and screaming 'oh Christ' is really chilling. Wolf Creek I found very disturbing. Antichrist was definitely unsettling.

provider5sectorzz9 · 06/07/2017 01:32

I found parts of the beach quite disturbing, enjoyed it though, and also found the book very good.

I enjoyed never let me go, both book and film, although I cant say I found it disturbing, haunting perhaps
Love The Shining.
Requiem for a dream was good, again haunting rather than disturbing for me

provider5sectorzz9 · 06/07/2017 01:35

I watched A Field in England a while ago after it was mentioned on MN on a scary film thread ( I think)
cant say I found it scary, just weird
I liked it though :o

cant bring myself to watch any of the centipede genre Shock

avamiah · 06/07/2017 01:39

The Purge is in my opinion the best.
The first one.

MissionItsPossible · 06/07/2017 01:41

provider5sectorzz9 I need to rewatch The Beach but I remember feeling there was an unpleasant undercurrent and things felt so off in that movie. I love Requiem for a Dream. Very haunting and disturbing and mind bending!

Also CREEP(2004) is so scary it's ridiculous.
It's set in London on the London Underground when you get locked in.
My OH is convinced that people are living in the underground after watching this film.😬😳.
Who knows ?
This is a must see .

makeourfuture · 06/07/2017 06:10

The Road

The book is very disturbing/thought provoking. You look at the world a little differently.

makeourfuture · 06/07/2017 06:14

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Nurse Ratched is terrifying.

ApocalypseNowt · 06/07/2017 08:08

Ok this isn't a horror film as such but definitely a bit unsettling.

It's called Raze and stars Zoe Bell (who i think is ace). Don't watch it if you can't watch ultra violence but it's an almost all female cast and Zoe acts her little socks off.

BabyPigeon83 · 06/07/2017 11:20

Good but not for the faint hearted:

Bone tomahawk

m.imdb.com/title/tt2494362/

Thefuryroad · 06/07/2017 13:22

I second Audition or pretty much anything by Takashi Miike. Visitor Q is one of the most unnecessarily unpleasant films I've seen. Ringu is terrifying, I slept with the light on fur a week after watching that. Also Don't look now for an unsettling classic.

MissionItsPossible · 06/07/2017 13:38

Reading my review back of Eden Lake is harsh. It wasn't "just ok" it was a good film, a very good film. But I didn't find it scary or unsettling. Great premise though, original and creative and I would recommend it.

Oh yes Don't go to sleep about the little girl Jennifer who came back for revenge after her younger siblings tied her shoe laces, and She couldn't get out of the car before it exploded.
Very good film.
