I'm just in the mood to watch some and I'd like recommendations.

My contributions are:

Fire Walk With me

I felt afraid and strangely vulnerable for some reason watching this. I was and am a fan of the original series but I did not expect this to be like it was and was very scared while watching lol.

Mysterious Skin

This one I watched when it was broadcast at 1am on Film Four I think and I ended up watching the whole thing at first not knowing what ir was about and by the end I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards. I want to watch it again but I don't know if I can put myself through it.

But both titles are such good films IMO. Anything similar in vein? No spoilers please.

Another vote for 'It Follows' it is so creepy

Also watch a lot of horror and Eden Lake I found very disturbing, just all a bit too 'real'

At the time I recall The Descent absolutely scared the bejeezus out of me but was immensely enjoyable to watch, similar with Creep (you'll never look at the London Underground in the same way again 😆)
I also like Japanese and Korean horror-worth looking some up

WordsAreWind · 05/07/2017 16:04

I found Requiem for a Dream quite unsettling to watch.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/07/2017 16:06

I was going to say Fire Walk With Me before I'd even read your first post!

Laiste · 05/07/2017 16:11

Forgot about Rec. That is really good. Creepy scares ramp right up at the end too, rather than just trailing off like a lot of films.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 05/07/2017 16:23

I'm always looking for new scares!

I second Martyrs and The Woodsman for being psychologically disturbing. I can still remember certain scenes from these, Kevin Bacon is horrifically mesmerising in the latter - *DISCLAIMER probably not a good watch for parents of young to tween children.

Eden Lake - difficult to watch, more of a perpetual-running-from-danger-in-a-mad-panic sort of thing but pretty good (like the Purge, You're Next). Same with things like Wolf Creek, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostel etc - brutal torture and jumpy serial killer type stuff.

Supernatural horror - Asian filmmakers do this the best, they can be a bit weird (I was disappointed in the effects at the end of Dark Water) but they are chilling. The Japanese originals of the Ring and the Grudge are excellent, Tale of Two Sisters, Audition (ooh yes Audition...the final scene !)

It Follows - really creepy, I watched it again just to poo my pants. I don't scare easy, most horrors I find a bit meh.

Revulsion - if that's the French film I'm thinking of which is told in reverse, that is truly horrible to watch. I didn't make it through the whole of the infamous scene, it was 9 minutes long and gratuitous frankly.

Blimey, I like my films don't I! Grin

If anyone has any more suggestions...

sarebear1983 · 05/07/2017 16:29

Rec and Rec 2 are great
Definitely Event Horizon and The orphanage.
Shallow Grave is one of my all time faves.
The Mist is quite good and You're Next is less horror more thriller-ish.
Creep (the one set on the underground) and Wolf Creek grossed me out to the point that I could only watch them once.
'It' is an absolute must, Tim Curry is just great in that.
New school horror wise I like the first two insidious films and the first conjuring film.
And I still have a soft spot for all the Scream films and alot of the Nightmare on Elm Street films, 1st one for scares, Dream Warriors and Freddys Dead for comedy value!

Argh! The Descent! The only film that's ever really bothered me - I felt claustrophobic in the dark for weeks after that!

brunette89 · 05/07/2017 16:45

Babadook

cushioncovers · 05/07/2017 16:48

It follows

Insidious

The orphanage

28 weeks later

Had to turn Eden lake off, so disturbing.

CanadaMoose91 · 05/07/2017 16:50

The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 05/07/2017 16:52

BillyDaveysDaughter I think the French film you're thinking of is called Irreversible which I would also recommend!

Audition

Wolf Creek

The Collector

Happiness- a dark comedy/drama which definitely leans more dark

Gummo I found quite unsettling. It's not openly gory or even meant to be scary but it made my skin crawl.

Maudlinmaud · 05/07/2017 16:53

Scary film fan. Why I do it to myself I don't know.
What's that film about the children killing all the adults? That left me terrified of my own dc for some time. Especially as one of mine used to appear from nowhere and just stare Shock
I love them really.

Maudlinmaud · 05/07/2017 16:56

Doh. It is actually called The Children. Watch it if you dare.

MamaHanji · 05/07/2017 16:59

Thethoughtfox

Martyrs is horrific and fantastic at the same time. I do feel sick when thinking about it, him it's also really interesting!

annandale · 05/07/2017 17:06

Not a horror film fan but for uneasy and creepy Death in Venice, Don't look now and of course Rear Window.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/07/2017 17:13

The sun bed scene in FD 3.

BabyPigeon83 · 05/07/2017 17:14

A lot of good movies mentioned, I would like to add:

Nocturnal Animals

m.imdb.com/title/tt4550098/?ref=m_nv_sr_1

Pans Labyrinth

m.imdb.com/title/tt0457430/?ref=m_nv_sr_1

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 05/07/2017 17:15

The Eyes of My Mother.
Very beautiful, deeply disturbing.

ApocalypseNowt · 05/07/2017 17:20

I'm definitely saving this thread for inspiration.

Dog Soldiers is a fun horror film.....directed by the same guy that did The Descent.

ApocalypseNowt · 05/07/2017 17:21

Also are many of these films on Netflix? I can never seem to find any decent horror films on there...

BabyPigeon83 · 05/07/2017 17:21

Oh I forgot a very entertaining and good scary movie:
Get Out

m.imdb.com/title/tt5052448/

BillyDaveysDaughter · 05/07/2017 17:27

Irreversible that was it StayGold. Ick. Thanks!

BabyPigeon83 · 05/07/2017 17:29

Big Bad Wolves, imdb is wrong, it's not a comedy

m.imdb.com/title/tt2309224/

MaMisled · 05/07/2017 17:34

Two old ones which I saw once, 30 years ago and they still haunt me now: I Spit on Your Grave and When a Stranger Calls.

Both terrifying!
