To think private ultrasounds shouldn't charge you full price if it's a miscarriage?

I just paid £80 for someone to tell me my baby is most likely dead.

Given the majority of people do not experience this and that the price is so high anyway, AIBU to think charging someone after telling them their baby is dead is just cruel?!

The not knowing must be very tough. Sad

I hope you can get some answers soon. I agree that payment shoukd be taken first so you aren't having to deal with something like paying when you have just recieved bad news.

INeedANameChange · 03/07/2017 14:28

Also hoping you get some answers soon and fingers crossed for the best.

I think you know YABU about not paying for a service that the hospital provides, regardless of the outcome, but I understand you wanting to divert your anger somewhere!

Dlpdep · 03/07/2017 14:32

I've been in that position, more than once. Unfortunately, what they provide is an ultrasound scan, not a positive outcome. They still have to pay for the equipment, the staff, the premises, regardless of the outcome. For the staff - well they say that one in four pregnancies result in miscarriage, so I'd say they come across it more often than you think - it must be difficult for them to give bad news too.

So sorry you are going through this OP.

I had the opposite experience of someone offering to waive some charges following our stillbirth, and I felt just as bad thinking they're trying to save me £X as blood money for my loss. Also how unimportant the money seemed at that moment.

Neither thought is particularly rational - we just look for someone/something to blame when faced with grief. Or to lash out at someone.

Look after yourself and I hope you're getting some support! FlowersFlowers

They said they won't do anything and said as far as they're concerned there's no evidence of anything being wrong.

FFS I'm 8w3 with a 3mm baby with no heartbeat just tell me the horrible truth.

I had a mmc found out st my nhs dating scan having paid for the photos in advance. They came and refunded and it was just awful. Tricky business sorry for your loss

Whatsername17 · 03/07/2017 18:30

Dragons you are a victim of 'protocol'. If there was a heartbeat, but there isn't now, you are going to miscarry. I'm really sorry.

DragonsandDungeons · 03/07/2017 18:53

That's what I think Whats. I've had fluid leaking now and pain so I wish they'd just tell me. I know it's a miscarriage I feel like they're treating me like I am a child Angry

I hate my EPU, when DP and I came out in tears two staff members were laughing and joking on the desk. So insensitive

Really sorry to hear of your loss. I have been there. MCs suck.

One of my MCs was diagnosed at a private clinic adjoining the Consultant's house. I fled in tears without paying. An invoice arrived a couple of days later. I fully intended to settle the bill but did wonder whether they would take pity on me.

Dieu · 03/07/2017 19:14

YANBU. Seems rather crass and unfeeling to me.

CakeNinja · 04/07/2017 01:16

Dieu, who should foot the bill then?

CakeNinja · 04/07/2017 01:31

Sorry Dieu, I've just read that back and I'm aware that other people feel the same, Twodogs in fact, you were just the last I saw before I scrolled up, so the question is open to anyone who cares to answer.

If you've opted for a service, it has to be paid for, regardless of the outcome.

Two, you wondered whether they would 'take pity' on you? Many pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage. 4 of mine. Plenty would go private if it wasn't going to cost them for bad news, but that isn't the nature of business. And with private health care, business is what it boils down to.

planetclom · 04/07/2017 01:54

Sorry for your loss, I now the pain.
On the idea of a discount really it's healthcare the ultimate outcome for us all is not good, we have a 100% mortality rate so yes they charge. In the US The last 2 weeks of life cost the most of anyone's treatment because people are dying, it's the nature of health care. I find it shocking how few people get this simple economics. Preserve the NHS because that is why you think private healthcare shouldn't charge
