to let DS have a McDonald's each week?

DS is a swimmer and swims with a squad that's 45 mins away. He starts training at 6:30 and comes out at 8 (pm btw) and it's very convenient for this day. He is healthy and slim and on all the other days has a good, balanced diet.

Is this seriously so bad? Shock

We always had a takeaway on a Friday night. None of my family are obese (I'm a size 6/8 at 5'5", my sister is a 10 at 5'8"). Little of what you fancy does you good. Especially if he's burning off all those calories anyway! None of us have food issues or binge eat or only eat junk so it's a load of bull that it encourages bad eating habits.
(Also it's not 1/7 meals unless you don't eat breakfast or lunch Hmm)

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:21

Another thing my mum and dad used to get us on a Sunday as a treat was a huge bucket of KFC to share!

Again this was in the 1980's and I remember the coating being the best thing ever. Tried KFC again about 10 years ago and it was yack. The coating isn't the same anymore and it tasted far greasier than I recall.

People giving 8 and 9 year olds happy meals? The kids must be starving if that's the kind of portion they normally get!

It's a perfectly normal portion for an 8 or 9 year old. It's only slightly smaller than the portion I would eat there and I'm well over 40.
My 13 year old eats an extra value meal, but the younger ones are full on a happy meal.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 10:24

I don't think Mcd's once a week is a big deal, but I do laugh at the idea that it's healthy or high quality

Bit odd to be laughing when no one said it was healthy of high quality. They said its not as unhealthy or low quality as people make out.

Toadinthehole · 29/06/2017 10:29

On the contrary. It has been suggested that it's just meat and bread innit. The best of British and Irish too, whatever that actually means.

But I agree that McD once a week isn't going to supersize you.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 10:30

Yes, that is what was suggested. If you look really clearly at even your own words, you can see that no-one suggested it was healthy or high quality.
Perhaps stop giggling to yourself and pay attention?

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 10:31

If the OP made her DS a ham sandwich and a packet of crisps to take with them to eat after swimming it would be nutitionally very similar to a cheeseburger Happy Meal.

Would she be unreasonable to do that? Her DS probably looks forwards to his weekly McDonalds visit.

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:32

I'm starting to get hungry...

Scoobydoobydont · 29/06/2017 10:33

I laugh at the idea it's any worse than most of what people eat when they are out and about, or even at home, but for some reason there is some weird snobbery about people knocking MacDonalds and thinking that in some way makes them superior while they chomp on their takeaway salad or wrap which has just as much salt and fat in and where you are probably less sure of the origin and quality of the meat than you would be at MacCHavvies

WorraLiberty · 29/06/2017 10:36

Why? It's about the same size as an average school dinner, without a pudding Confused

You can always give them some fruit afterwards.

00100001 · 29/06/2017 10:36

Life is too short to have water with burger and chips.

BorisTrumpsHair · 29/06/2017 10:39

they don't add salt to their fries

funniest fake news I've read in a while Grin

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:39

I think that's the thing, McD's has become synonymous with being 'chavvy' for some reason. A bit like Primark (Primani).

Not sure where that comes from..maybe because it's relatively cheap to buy? Perhaps they should put their prices up and make it more of a gourmet dining experience Grin

00100001 · 29/06/2017 10:39

worra

You're on Mumsnet. Where a skinny 2 year old will have 3 sausages, a whole can of beans, five jacket potatoes and an entire tray of flapjack as mid morning snack.

Newtssuitcase · 29/06/2017 10:39

For his only meal no I wouldn't but in addition to his proper meal if he's starving I wouldn't have a real problem. I was a competitive gymnast training five times a week and my coach gave me a lift home on a Friday. She would always stop and buy me a burger even though I'd have had a meal before training.

Toadinthehole · 29/06/2017 10:41

I think my point has been made. Take your horse and burger it!

00100001 · 29/06/2017 10:42

Why is it not a "proper" meal though newt?

TequilaSunshine · 29/06/2017 10:42

My 9 year old still has a Happy Meal, it's more than enough for him. It's a perfectly normal portion.
My nearly 14 year old still had them up until recently, but prefers the adult meals now. Smile

This is true, give me a beer anyway (do they sell booze in McD's???)

wendz86 · 29/06/2017 10:45

We usually get mcdonalds after swimming every other week. Don't have time to cook and its a treat. Nothing wrong with it if diet generally healthy.

BorisTrumpsHair · 29/06/2017 10:45

I used to like those scalding hot apple crusty pie things they used to do..burnt my mouth on those many a time..do they still do those??

they had WARNING FILLING MAY BE HOT on the box Grin
More McDonald's hilarity.

BloodWorries · 29/06/2017 10:51

I disagree. Mcdonald's is rubbish.

Now if you said Burger King then I could get behind it. I'd quite happily eat one of them every day.

KFC is okay, but the chips are horrible.

Maybe mcdonalds for a milkshake, burger king for the burger and chips and then KFC for a piece of chicken, corn on the cob and some coleslaw. Unless you're weird and like mcdonalds chips.
Then stop off at pizza hut for all you can eat ice cream.
Now that's a proper meal.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 10:51

They can't sell them for a certain period of time after they have been cooked so they have had time to cool down properly.

ThymeLord · 29/06/2017 10:51

It is just meat and bread. I didn't end the sentence with the word 'innit' though. Presumably that was added to make me sound thick?!

All this competitive food bullshit must be very draining to maintain in RL.
