to let DS have a McDonald's each week?

DS is a swimmer and swims with a squad that's 45 mins away. He starts training at 6:30 and comes out at 8 (pm btw) and it's very convenient for this day. He is healthy and slim and on all the other days has a good, balanced diet.

Is this seriously so bad? Shock

I want nuggets now

Anyway OP, it's fine.

And what is it about swimmingthat makes you feel soooooo hungry. After swimming I was allowed a packet of monster munch and some bovril from the machine at the baths. And that was in addition to my tea! I know! The decadence eh?

robinsongyal · 29/06/2017 09:37

I choose not to eat at any fast food chain outlet (KFC, subway, McDonalds, Nando's, Burger King, Yo Sushi etc...) however I don't stop other people from doing so or give them long lectures! (So I don't expect the same back about being a 'buzz kill' Wink ) think last time I ate at a McDonalds was 10 years ago so I don't know how much it has changed in terms of its nutrition.

If you are strapped for time and your boy likes going to McDonalds then once a week sounds fine! However, it isn't the best nutrition to fuel a body post-exercise, it will restore glycogen stores but that is about it. - although you probably knew that! (Studying degree in nutrition and sports performance). If it works for your schedule then go for it! I think mums tend to exert too much opinion on what other mums are feeding their kids Hmm x

BitOutOfPractice · 29/06/2017 09:37

do they still not have employee unions

If they don't, they are very much not alone.

spiderlight · 29/06/2017 09:39

My DS has chip-shop chips most Fridays after swimming and it doesn't seem to be doing him any harm. He's very sporty (also does fencing and parkour), slim and athletic and eats well the rest of the week.

GherkinSnatch · 29/06/2017 09:44

At least go 5guys.

Where's the crying with laughter emoji when you need it?

McDonalds for 4 of us = £10 or less (Chicken mayo or a McChicken sandwich for me, Big Mac meal for DH so we can share the chips and juice, Chicken nugget happy meal so DD can have the nuggets, they can share the chips, and a plain hamburger for DS who will only eat a little bit of it but most of the chips)
5 Guys = £36.25 for: 2x hamburgers, 1x fries, 1x reg drink, 1x little burger, 1x little cheese burger, 1x little fries, 1x bottle of water.

Totally doable.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 09:46

The food isn't the issue at McDonald's. It's the way the company is run that is the problem.

Or I it was last I knew

whattodoaboutthis2017 do they still not have employee unions?

There is no specific "McDonalds Workers" union, but there are unions McDonalds employees can join.

The company is run very well and I'm really happy with it. It's actually a really amazing job; I love working there.

spaghettithrower · 29/06/2017 09:48

Don't see a problem with it after swimming once a week.
McDonald's is a lot better than it used to be and they have improved the quality of the meat they use.
He doesn't have to have Coke with it - there is water or juice available. Similarly, he could have a wrap with no chips sometimes. The wraps are good :-)
As for the burgers, they are stuffed with salad these days (or at least where I am in Europe).
I go once a week every other week because of my work schedule and my "hobby" in the evening. I am a swimmer too (open-water) and find it makes me crazy hungry and so long as I am swimming regularly my weight remains stable regardless of what I eat.
I wouldn't worry about it so long as he is having a healthy balanced diet the rest of the time.

DataColour · 29/06/2017 09:51

I personally feel once a week is too much, especially after a sport session, not because it's fast food, just because my kids are always hungry soon after a Happy Meal and ask for dinner when we get home. They are skinny minnies and very active 8 and 6 yr olds.
Could buy them a bigger meal, but then for that price we can eat a local cafe.

DataColour · 29/06/2017 09:52

Eat AT a local cafe, not eat a local cafe!

waitforitfdear · 29/06/2017 09:56

We always took our 4 swimming on a Friday night followed by chips and home to watch a family DVD.

My kids are adults now and it's their fondest memory of their childhoods, up there with holidays etc.

Life is for living and bloody enjoying.

Food police and diet bores next ignored

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 29/06/2017 09:57

Once a week I take mine for a treat on either a Tuesday or Friday.....shock horror sometimes both!!! We don't go to McDonald's much simply coz we prefer other things but now and then we have a happy meal (me too ha!) Our fave is subway, that gets slated on here too and I don't get why. I have a salad bowl and the kids either a sandwich or toastie with a cookie after. Hardly the worst thing. We often choose to go to a local cafe now and the kids will choose either a wrap, pizza or baguette... Sometimes pasta. I'm aware its not the healthiest but its in moderation and we really enjoy the outings together.

00100001 · 29/06/2017 09:58

Why would a chicken wrap be any better than a burger? Confused

For example the chicken garlic mayo wrap has more salt, calories and overall fat than a burger. The wrap is only lower on Sat fat and sugars and they are low.

Ameliablue · 29/06/2017 10:01

Depends on his level of training. If he's in a top squad it would probably be frowned on by coaches. Otherwise as long as his diet is good the rest of the time.

llangennith · 29/06/2017 10:04

It's fine. DGS has a meal before canoeing but is always starving after so he has two cheeseburgers on the way home and straight to bed.
Rest of the week it's meat, potatoes and green veg for dinner and lots of apples as snacks. He has lots of energy and is slim bad healthy. People really can get a bit obsessive about additives, salt and sugar. Everything in moderation!

1stTimeMama · 29/06/2017 10:07

It's totally personal opinion. My children have never, and will never (as long as I am responsible for what they eat), have a McDonald's, or any other convenience type fast food.

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:08

What is it in McD's that is so 'junky'? Genuine question - my mum and dad used to take us there in the 80's as a treat if we had been up to London for a pants or something and I LOVED it. Do't really eat it now and can't recall having taken my kids (6 and 3) there yet, but that's just circumstance more than anything else.

So it's 100% beef? - that's ok surely? A bun -is that any worse than eating a sarnie/toast/ a bagel at home..all bread innit? Gherkins and salad - ok..so what is it? The mayo? IS that any worse than a plop of Hellmans in the tuna mayo mix I use for my kids jacket potatoes?

Obvs coke/fizzy pop not so good, but if you have water or juice that's ok?

So what is it that gives it the bad rep it can't seem to shake off? Was it really that crappy 20 or 30 years ago?

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:10

I used to like those scalding hot apple crusty pie things they used to do..burnt my mouth on those many a time..do they still do those??

YesMadamDeputySpeaker · 29/06/2017 10:11

It's absolutely fine. Mine have McDonalds or KFC as a treat every Friday night and it doesn't do them any harm. 'Everything in moderation', as previous posters have said.

Spartak · 29/06/2017 10:11

Yes they do Dave. I had one yesterday.

Scoobydoobydont · 29/06/2017 10:11

Why are people using words like "junk" and "treat" and spouting shite like "as long as they eat a balanced diet the rest of the week"

It's just food, the same as you get anywhere else and in most cases is no worse than a standard school lunch, pub meal, cafe meal or 90% of what kids get fed at home.

People giving 8 and 9 year olds happy meals? The kids must be starving if that's the kind of portion they normally get!

The only thing I would have a possible issue with at MCDs if it was a regular thing was a huge sugary drink, so get a water instead. But even then I can't see an issue occasionally.

Most people wouldn't have an issue serving their kids a homemade spag Bol, lasagne etc and yet preach to people about the harm in a burger from Macdonalds. Get a grip people and stop being so bloody snooty.

YesMadamDeputySpeaker · 29/06/2017 10:11

I personally have McDonalds three times a week for lunch. Bracing myself for the flaming.

PinkHeart5911 · 29/06/2017 10:13

It's just burger & chips, I don't get why many people get so worked up over it.

Imo it's no different to someone that gives a child fish fingers and chips once a week at home.

It's fine OP as it's 1 meal out of his whole diet that week

DavetheCat2001 · 29/06/2017 10:17

That's why I asked..I'm trying to figure out what about it is so bad (aside from a huge fizzy drink and maybe one too many of those apple pies..mmmmmm..)

I give my kids fish fingers, chips and peas at least a couple of times a week as my 6 year old DS is so damn fussy..he'll only eat sausages, fish fingers, pizza, chips, and various vegetables..oh and my homemade chicken curry (strangely!), so I'm sure his diet isn't the best.

He's active and slim and happy though so I'm not too worried. Most boys grow up loving food and will try most things, so I'm not freaking yet!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 10:18

That's what I don't understand Dave

There seems to be a special hatred reserved for McDonalds that many other places that sell similar, or often worse quality food, escape.

People mention eating at cafes instead, but unless it's a vair naice, boasts about using local free range artisan meat etc, the quality at your average greasy spoon is likely to be similar, if not worse or the nice ones will be a lot more expensive.

At least McDonalds burgers are 100% beef, there are plenty of much shittier burgers on the market.

I'm not a particular fan, but I don't mind a McDonalds every once in a while and there's a lot worse out there when you need to eat on the road. That's one thing I like about McDonalds, you know what you're getting, it's quick and fairly cheap.

If you go back to the days before there were McDonalds everywhere, you were stuck with Little Chef, which is very slow and famously extortionately priced shit food.

I use them when travelling for work sometimes. Some independent cafes take fucking ages to produce any food and the quality isn't always much better. Often, I simply don't have time to wait even 10/20 minutes for them to faff around making stuff.

Of course there's also places like M&S Simply food, but when I've been out in the rain all day, I want something hot and comforting, not a fridge cold salad or sandwich that I'll have to wait an hour or two to warm up a bit so it is vaguely edible.

Toadinthehole · 29/06/2017 10:20

Well, it's burger and chips and fizz. Plenty of salt, plenty of fat. That's the "package".

I don't think Mcd's once a week is a big deal, but I do laugh at the idea that it's healthy or high quality.
