to let DS have a McDonald's each week?

DS is a swimmer and swims with a squad that's 45 mins away. He starts training at 6:30 and comes out at 8 (pm btw) and it's very convenient for this day. He is healthy and slim and on all the other days has a good, balanced diet.

Is this seriously so bad? Shock

I don't see anything wrong with having takeaway once a week, especially when the child concerned is living an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

Through unforeseen circumstances, one of my DC ended up having McDonalds twice in one day earlier this week. (He visited with two different sets of people). Shock, horror, he's still alive to tell the tale.

I don't trust the bloody stuff

Do you think there is something nefarious about it? Trust is a very odd word to use.

It's just food. The beef is 100% beef, the nuggets are chicken breast not formed meat, everything has had the salt and sugar massively reduced in the last decade, you can get fruit bags and pure juice rather than milkshakes.

It's just fucking food.

I don't trust the bloody stuff.

I work there. We use the best quality meat and ingredients for all our food; being the biggest player in our market, we get the number one pick of suppliers, so we pick the best.

The beef is all 100% British and Irish and all chicken (including nuggets!) is 100% breast meat.

avamiah · 29/06/2017 02:18

emmy,
Are you being serious.????
How dare they feed him McDonald's.
Haha

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 29/06/2017 02:39

I'm a great believer in the 80/20 rule: If a child is active and healthy, I'm happy if their diet is perfectly balanced and super healthy 80% of the time. The remaining 20% - not so much. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

becausebecausebecause · 29/06/2017 02:45

Salt is good for you!

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 29/06/2017 02:45

Sounds like the kind of thing he'll remember really fondly when he grows up

Surely nobody has ever remembered mcdonalds fondly.

becausebecausebecause · 29/06/2017 02:50

My foodie memories are from the miserable meals at friend houses, lacking in butter, salt or flavour. Yuck. Those same skinny, pale kids grew up to have all sorts of health complaints. Poor sods. Bring on the butter I say. As for the families that outlawed any food group, god help your kids is all I can say. There breeds greed and obsession.

GoneDownhill · 29/06/2017 02:52

It's fine but I guess it slightly depends what he orders. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I probably wouldn't normally but given the swimming and the timing I would. I wouldn't have asked on Mumsnet though 😁.

BoomBoomsCousin · 29/06/2017 04:10

Once a week would be more than I'd really like (at least if he was having a burger and fries etc.), but the swimming once a week and having a McDs seems better to me than sitting at home inactive and not having the McDs IYSWIM.

Marzipants · 29/06/2017 04:18

I never knew you could ask for unsalted fries!

It isn't 1/7 of his meals btw, unless he's only eating one meal a day.

We used to have a chippy tea most Fridays. At the time I thought it was a great treat for us kids, now I realise it was a great break for my mum!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 06:41

Well of course you're getting him fish fingers, carrot sticks and water, so what's the problem Wink?

I'd be more concerned about the intelligence of adults who can't do primary school maths rather than those who go to McDonalds every once in a while anyway.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 06:42

There's probably more salt and processed shit in a ham sandwich anyway and no-one gets their knickers in a knot about feeding those to their DCs.

scrivette · 29/06/2017 06:46

I met a farmer recently who supplies cows to Mc Donald's for their beef, he said they insist on much higher standards than than other places.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 29/06/2017 06:49

Sorry I can't resist....it'd be less than 5% of his weekly main meals. Assuming three a day and not including snacks.

🤓

OliviaStabler · 29/06/2017 06:52

Personally I think that is too much. I love a good McDonald's but not that often.

JoandMax · 29/06/2017 06:52

It's fine, we used to do the same. Mine had an activity filled afternoon and trying to fit food in was a nightmare - drive thru McDs was perfect!! In an afternoon filled with sporty active sessions it didn't concern me at all.......

Gizlotsmum · 29/06/2017 06:58

We do this! Ds has 1.5 hrs dance I then have 45 mins to get across town ( in rush hour) to get dd to brownies. Not our town so no chance to pop home and not enough time to sit and eat in a cafe.. so macdonalds it is!

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 29/06/2017 07:00

When I was a kid I did ballet every Saturday. On the way home my parents would get me a gingerbread cake thing covered in icing in some fun shape. It's one of the best memories of my childhood. It's not just the food, it's that your parents care enough to make a fun ritual for you. Mine only lasted a few months but I'll definitely be doing similar for my little ones.

silkpyjamasallday · 29/06/2017 07:04

I used to swim once a week as a child until I was about 12, and my DM would take me for a mcdonalds afterwards every week. I am a size 6-8 and healthy it's done me absolutely no harm. He is expending the calories he consumes when swimming, if you were just taking him and he did no exercise it might be problematic but ime swimming makes you ravenous and a McDonald's hits the spot.

amysmummy12345 · 29/06/2017 07:05

If he has three meals a day that's 1/21 of his main meals. Just under 5%?

rosy71 · 29/06/2017 07:09

It's fine. I take my boys to McDonalds every Thursday after football training. Because it's late, I don't fancy cooking when we get home (I pick them up on my way home from work so no time to eat or prepare anything. ) Ds2 goes straight from afterschool club to football club so again, no time to eat beforehand.
