Or is toast with honey a perfectly acceptable breakfast for a 4yo?

Just that, really. DD(4) is asking for toast with honey for breakfast. DH is telling her she can't have it. I ask why, he says it's just pure sugar and looks at me like I've got two heads. Surely toast with honey is a perfectly normal breakfast option? It's not like she eats it every day (or in fact ever before).

DH is foreign, if that makes a difference. He has some really weird (to me) ideas about what is and isn't an acceptable meal Hmm

Say once a week that's ok, but he is right, it's essentially sugar (honey) on sugar (assume it's sliced pan bread, not sourdough etc which is higher in protein and lower GI?).

Some people can't genetically handle high GI things as well as others, the advice there is to pair a starchy carb with protein and fat, so eggs with toast etc.

Clalpolly · 28/06/2017 08:22

Local honey is very good for boosting immunity. Brush their teeth after breakfast as well.

waitforitfdear · 28/06/2017 08:23

Of course it's clearly fine.

My Teenage boys existed toast between all possible meals snd are perfectly healthy adults.

All this bloody angst over food is ridiculous. Lots of balance and ban nothing. Lots of excersise and kids thrive.

roundaboutthetown · 28/06/2017 08:24

A 4-year old asks for toast and honey and is told no, because it would be bad for her if she had it every day?! She has not asked to have it every day. She has asked for it for today.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:24

So weetabix is still really sugary then??

6g vs 4.4g?

Pffft.

Plus a bit of fruit and you've busted past the haribo, no?

Everything in moderation, that's it.

Honey once in a while will be a lot better than refined sugar n cereals every day.

Oblomov17 · 28/06/2017 08:24

I hate threads like this.
Of course it's ok. not every day. But then having the same breakfast every day isn't ideal.
And I don't agree with some of the comments. Saying honey is the same as sugar, isnt correct.
Saying it isn't very nutritional? So add a banana? How does adding another carb help?
Then recommending cereals? Well my kids love all cereals, but let's be honest, they are quite 'empty' nutritionally!!

We could rip to shreds most options. So let's not!!

Moderation!!

forceslover · 28/06/2017 08:24

Oh FGS. Nutella, cereal etc it is food not fucking cocaine! Agh! So much handwringing over things! Save it for things that really matter!

theredjellybean · 28/06/2017 08:26

oh i think i will have a packet of haribo's on toast and see if i go a bit manic...

really ...she is 4 ...she has asked for honey on toast...once....the world will not end .

roundaboutthetown · 28/06/2017 08:26

Before sugar was available, people ate honey. It is better for you than cane sugar and is not going to do the poor girl any harm whatsoever to have on a piece of toast once a week, assuming with such an obsessive father, the rest of her diet is rigidly controlled...

expatinscotland · 28/06/2017 08:29

'I hate threads like this. '

They're pretty ridiculous, aren't they? OMG, CARBS! SUGAR! Where's the PROTEIN?!!! Lions, and tigers and bears! Give her avocado and egg on wholemeal toast or she'll be obese forever! It's okay, but not every half hour, once in an aeon, perhaps. Mine only eat unicorn turds off the backs of flying tortoises and wash it all down with leprechaun tears, I cannot believe anyone would eat anything different (clutches pearls).

Common sense isn't so common.

WTF is a 'scrape' of honey, anyhow?

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:29

Oh and lets not forget that honey has health benefits- especially local honey.

alwaysthepessimist · 28/06/2017 08:30

hmmmm my dd 5 eats wholemeal bread with local honey on everyday at breakfast or in winter she stirs a teaspoon into porridge (with a banana) - it helps with her hayfever - this year she has hardly suffered, she isn't overweight and doesn't particularly eat any other sweets either, she isn't a cereal person, she doesn't eat any of the kids cereals, occasionally she asks for cheerios or coco pops then decides she doesn't like them again

tinypop4 · 28/06/2017 08:31

I would keep this as a weekend thing - I do insist on lower sugar breakfasts during the week such as weetabix, rice crispies, shredded wheat. They can have marmite on their toast.

It's not a very filling meal as there's no protein, I'd worry about her being hungry again in about an hour.

I have a sweet tooth and don't like eggs so I eat a lot of "sugary" breakfasts but I always make sure that there's yogurt, nut butter, cheese, etc. included otherwise will have a blood sugar crash.

If your DD consistently wants a breakfast like this then maybe honey and peanut butter would be better.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:32

Yeah I hate threads like this as well.

Its competitve restrictive eating, and imo is damaging to think like it.

ITS FUCKING FOOD PEOPLE, NOT CRACK COCAINE!!

expatinscotland · 28/06/2017 08:32

'Before sugar was available, people ate honey.'

And used it to make mead! Mmm. Somehow the human race survived.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:34

Weetabix is nearly as sugary as honey on toast, and a lot less nutritionally beneficial.
As for rice crispies being healthier than honey- really?? Hmm

roundaboutthetown · 28/06/2017 08:35

What's honey doing in the house if the OP's dh thinks it's the food of the devil? Or does that only apply to honey at breakfast, or honey for children??? What does he think will happen to her if she eats it? That she will turn into the Honey Monster?

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:35

Mmmmmmm I love mead.

ShitStorm2017 · 28/06/2017 08:35

Jesus fucking Christ! What a drama over some honey! Seriously?

No wonder more and more children are developing eating disorders with the amount of hysterical parents and their ridiculous attitude to good about!

Honey on toast is fine, is it ok to eat all day every day probably not.

Goldenphoenix · 28/06/2017 08:36

I'm quite relaxed about what DD has for breakfast, occasional toast and honey or jam is fine by me.

tinypop4 · 28/06/2017 08:36

It depends what else you're eating though doesn't it? Honey on white bread vs rice crispies with milk (protein) the latter is surely more balanced and therefore a bit healthier? Rice pops in our cupboard have 2.8g of sugar for a 30g serving- they eat less than that. Is that more than honey?

Eolian · 28/06/2017 08:36

Oh come on. Yes, 'hand-wringing' about food is boring and annoying. But obesity and diabetes are widespread. And let's not pretend people are largely having wholemeal bread with 'a scrape of honey' and then eschewing sugar for the rest of the day. We all eat far too much sugar. It's bad for us and can have serious long-term health effects. Let's also not pretend that the only alternatives are lentils and mung beans at one end of the scale and Haribo (or cocaine Hmm) at the other.

tinypop4 · 28/06/2017 08:37

Apparently a teaspoon of honey has 6g of sugar.
