to not see the appeal of Glastonbury

Just saw something on telly about Glastonbury and don't see the appeal AT ALL.

Sleeping in a tent with thousands of other people in close proximity, no showers, portaloos, up to your knees in mud if it rains, noise, crowds, miles of walking to get around the place (which apparently is the size of a small town), they charge you hundreds of pounds to get in in the first place, loads of crusty hippies and new age shite.

Not an age thing - never appealed when I was in my teens either.

OP posts:
steff13 · 24/06/2017 00:15

I don't see the appeal of that sort of event, either, but I've accepted that there are things I like that other people don't.

honeyroar · 24/06/2017 00:15

Yes Karma Police is lovely too. Shame they missed High and Dry.

RhubardGin · 24/06/2017 00:22

Glastonbury, T in the Park etc would be my idea of hell.

Too many people, not a huge fan of live music, drunk or high folk, the expense.

I hate any sort of camping, even glamping wouldn't swing it for me!

Just not my cup of tea, I like my creature comforts Grin

RockyBird · 24/06/2017 00:23

Last festival I went to I lost my shoes. They came off as my feet sank into the mud and disappeared forever.

I'm hurtling towards 50 these days....and the shoes thing was only last year Smile

honeyroar · 24/06/2017 00:30

Haha RockyBird, love it!

I only fancy going to Glastonbury because everyone seems older. The thought of going to Leeds festival, full of kids that leave all their rubbish and trash their tents makes me shudder. Perhaps I'm deluded and the oldies at Glastonbury do too!

squoosh · 24/06/2017 00:31

A few people have mentioned V festival and how awful it was but to me V has always seemed like an impostor festival anyway attended by 'stars' of Hollyoaks and Towie and people who would like to be on Hollyoaks or Towie.

Notknownatthisaddress · 24/06/2017 00:35

@WicksEnd

I see this thread on here every year. So what? Don't go. I don't fancy Wimbledon but I don't start a thread about it whinging about how stupid people are for paying for overpriced strawberries, queuing all morning and watching a ball bounce over a net.

There's always one isn't there? Wink

The irony in your post is hilarious.

If you find these kind of 'whinging threads' so utterly tedious, then why are you posting on here?

I think you are missing the point of what a discussion forum is my dear.

OhWellNeverMindEh · 24/06/2017 00:39

Love Flaming Lips, always entertain and I thought Nadia Rose was brilliant.

I love the acoustic sets.

Glastonbury always brings me new music loves. Haim in 2016 and Future Islands.

Liking this Anderson Paak too!

NapQueen · 24/06/2017 00:50

The best bit of Glasto is the incredibly satisfying drone pics of the coloured preerected tents in their methodical rows.

Thankfully I can enjoy that from the comfort of my own home.

contemplates framing the pic

TheCraicDealer · 24/06/2017 01:12

To the poster who mentioned rock festivals; yes, much better. No posers, no 'dress code' and a much more polite crowd.

That may very well be true, but I'm remembering about DP's mate who went to one in Belgium and pooped himself because he didn't want to lose his (amazing, To be fair) spot before Iron Maiden came on. He only had one pair of jeans and the fella who had to sit next to him on the coach back to the midlands still hasn't forgiven him.

I don't "do" camping, hate crowds and need my sleep. Festivals are just not my bag. I'd rather spend the money on a week's holiday but each to their own.

Glastokitty · 24/06/2017 02:00

I used to bloody love Glastonbury, I worked in the beer tents so we got free tickets. It was brilliant fun, even in the mud years, it was just total freedom from real life for a few days. We did have staff facilities including secure camping, hot showers and a staff food/beer tent which helped though. I wouldn't have the energy for it now I'm an old gimmer, but I have some brilliant memories, including watching Bowie, and laughing harder than I've ever laughed in my life (on mushrooms by mistake :)). So if you don't get it, or think you'd hate it, that's fine, of course it isn't everyone's cup of tea! But I'm so glad I did it back in the day, it was a blast!

PussCatTheGoldfish · 24/06/2017 07:53

Cory I came on here to say the same thing. The archaeological dig I (now we and DC) go on offer a similar escapism. Wide variety of people, good food, great atmosphere etc. Less live music of course, unless someone brings their guitar Grin.

I'm not into huge crowds myself so couldn't do Glastonbury, DH would love to though.

malificent7 · 24/06/2017 08:14

Im currently in my tent at my 15th Glasto! I probably smell like a sheep's arse but so does everyone else so i cant tell!

I had a great night's sleep... fell asleep listening to Radiohead. Dp went out raving. My turn tonight. Happy days!

But then i live locally. Cant stand hearing it in my garden and not going

BlackAppleCore · 24/06/2017 09:58

So far I've seen
Black Honey (meh)
The Lemon twigs (well worth a listen!)
Little Dragons (shite but DH loves them)
Blossoms (ace!)
Royal Blood (absolutely fucking amazing! Should have been headlining!)
Radiohead (lovely voice, one or two good songs, don't listen to if depressed or suicidle)

BlackAppleCore · 24/06/2017 10:06

malificent7 Same situation here last night! I got cosy in my tent after Radiohead and DH went out to party. I'm too old for that shit (at 36 😂) I'm done by midnight lol

HopeYourCakeIsShit · 24/06/2017 10:10

Festivals such as these would be my idea of hell, I'm really glad that the OP started a thread about it though as it's been interesting to read the views of the lovers and the haters.
The very essence of a multi subject discussion forum.

WildBelle · 24/06/2017 10:15

Currently lying in my caravan in the middle of the festival with both my DCs who are still fast asleep after a bit of a late night going to see some of their favourite bands last night. They're having a whale of a time. The kidz field is like heaven on earth for little ones, they've gone a bit ferel and could do with a bath as we've been here nearly a week.

For me, I love coming here as I get to catch up with lots of friends who I rarely see, I also make good money working here. It has definitely changed over the last 20 years and has become a lot more mainstream but I love the quirky things you see here.

FlapsMcGee · 24/06/2017 10:17

Glastonbury is an experience like no other. I have been a few times and it is amazing. Like anything it isn't for everyone and I can see why it wouldn't appeal. Glastonbury was different to any other festival I have been to, it's about so much more than the music, for starters. It's another world, magical, mysterious, beautiful and exciting. So, so, so much to see and do. You could go every year and have a totally different experience.
Also, they have flushing loos! Wink

Springersrock · 24/06/2017 10:45

We have a large festival near us. We always go and really enjoy it.

However, I can walk home if I have to, no way would I camp up there, that truly is my idea of hell

Takes me about a week to get over it these days though

Polarbearflavour · 24/06/2017 13:05

I went to British Summertime in Hyde Park last year for the day which was nice - VIP tickets so nice loos and no queues and champagne.

I went to Truck festival years ago with my now ex bf. Camping itself was awful for the night and so were the loos but it was quite nice, laid back indie vibe and bands like Idlewild playing.

The80sweregreat · 24/06/2017 13:13

Caught up with Royal blood this morning on tv they are very good.
The crowd seemed to like it.

MadisonMontgomery · 24/06/2017 13:20

I went to festivals a few times when I was a teenager - tbh I hated them, all that walking, and mud, and standing for hours watching bands that sound dreadful live. I do have some friends who do Glastonbury every year and I cannot imagine anything worse.

RoseVase2010 · 24/06/2017 13:33

I've always enjoyed Glastonbury.

From the comfort of my sofa.

I'm not a big music lover, I hate camping, I dislike crowds, I'm not good with discomfort, I'm a fussy eater....

Thankfully there are lots of people who are keen to go so, as I said, I can watch it on TV.

The80sweregreat · 24/06/2017 13:38

Never been to a festival. I watch Glastonbury on tv and some of it appeals but 200,000 people doesnt at my age.
I do feel ive missed out not bothering with any music gigs as i like all kinds of music. Not been to a concert since late 80s.
I am a lightweight clearly.. Lol

amelie427 · 24/06/2017 13:44

The number of people who have such a strong opinion on Glastonbury, who have never been always amazed me Grin

I've been loads, it's such fun with such a variety of entertainment - used to camp in my younger days but stay in a hotel when we go now. Missing it desperately this year as have an 11 week old.
