to not see the appeal of Glastonbury

Just saw something on telly about Glastonbury and don't see the appeal AT ALL.

Sleeping in a tent with thousands of other people in close proximity, no showers, portaloos, up to your knees in mud if it rains, noise, crowds, miles of walking to get around the place (which apparently is the size of a small town), they charge you hundreds of pounds to get in in the first place, loads of crusty hippies and new age shite.

Not an age thing - never appealed when I was in my teens either.

I think I'd go to anything if I had a camper van. A proper bed and a proper kettle? Yes please!

Glastonbury does look far too big though. Too much walking.

And what on earth do women do if they have their period? Must be awful, having to queue for manky portaloos when you're on a heavy day.

BangkokBlues · 23/06/2017 12:51

Too much walking.

It is a LOT of waling. I'd be interested in recording how far I wak in a day if I ever go again, I bet it is like more than 10 miles.

Also, it isn't just the walking it is the standing up all the time that gets your lower back.

And what on earth do women do if they have their period? Must be awful, having to queue for manky portaloos when you're on a heavy day.

Well you don't need a toilt to change your tampon, personally I would change that in my tent if it was closer/nicer.

The compost toilets are actually pretty nice, we used to make special loo trips if we were ever near the composters.

Alittlepotofrosie · 23/06/2017 12:52

I don't think id mind a rock festival but paying a grand to listen to the likes of busted? No thanks.

AlletrixLeStrange · 23/06/2017 12:52

You can all come and live with me if you like? I live pretty close and when I've been to Glastonbury I come home for a nice bath every other day Grin
It is amazing, the atmosphere is great I just love it. Haven't managed to get tickets for two years now though (used to get them free from my ex who performs there every year) Sad

MercuryMadness · 23/06/2017 13:41

But if you are having a heavy period, surely you need a nice hot shower morning and night in order not to feel suicidal?

oneleggedfatbird · 23/06/2017 20:02

Grin I'm here right now. Don't pay to get in cos I work in the kids field. I love it. It's not for everyone but it's my favorite week of the year. My kids love it too- don't see them from dawn to sunset, they're having such a ball. Tbh, I'm not even sure who is playing this year- the bands aren't important to me. Too much else to see and do

Crunchymum · 23/06/2017 20:12

Camped at V Festival for a few nights when I was early 20's and fucking hated it.

Day festivals / hotels near the festival all the way for me.

Halle71 · 23/06/2017 20:24

We were talking about it in the playground at pick up today. The oldest of my mum group is 50 in a couple of years and was talking about going to Glastonbury to celebrate. I told them I had never fancied it so wouldn't go. Too far, too hot/cold/wet/muddy, too many days holiday required, the toilet/ shower thing and not that interested in all it has to offer.
I used to go to Reading in the 90s, and had an amazing time at Camp Bestival in 2015, so would consider that again, but Glastonbury is just too much.

The80sweregreat · 23/06/2017 20:57

Blackapple, who have you seen so far?
Watching on tv. So glad im not there as not good in crowds.
Doesnt look too muddy though
Hope its not too bad for you.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 23/06/2017 21:11

Ive been few times and enjoyed it, however the organisers got permission to expand and increase capacity and i think its just too much.

50000 people in front of the pyramid stage to watch the headline act and then all trying to get through a tiny gap in the hedge at the end... in slippery mud... No thanks. I'll just watch it on TV from the comfort of my sofa Smile

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/06/2017 21:15

Glastonbury town and Tor- yes. Glastonbury Festival - No.

FYI I live less than 20 miles away.

MoominFlaps · 23/06/2017 21:20

I don't get festivals at all, but I don't like:

  • crowds
  • late nights
  • loud music
  • drinking
  • drugs

So a fairly safe bet I'd hate Glastonbury. Grin

MoominFlaps · 23/06/2017 21:22

I LOVE Busted Grin

I like camping, I love music and I don't mind getting dirty but I still have no desire to go to a festival. Just doesn't appeal to me for some reason^

Me too, even though DM only lives a few miles away.

ClopySow · 23/06/2017 21:37

I went to a festival a couple of years ago. My hips never really recovered.

Highalert · 23/06/2017 21:39

I went to loads of festivals in my teens. Loved them. Memories are a bit hazy though Grin

Shitalopram · 23/06/2017 21:44

YANBU. I went in the early 90s and had a slightly good time but wouldn't bother again. Have been to festivals since then on VIP tickets though Grin

BonnieF · 23/06/2017 21:46

I'd be up for it if there was a pop-up Premier Inn On site with proper beds & proper bathrooms.

I am officially old...

Shitalopram · 23/06/2017 21:46

The TOWN of Glastonbury, on the other hand, is somewhere I make a special trip to at least once a year for the Tor, the springs and the general atmosphere. Lovely place.

MyCalmX · 23/06/2017 21:49

...who don't know how to behave at a festival

OK 😒

Glastonbury has become wanky. I have one friend who does the count down, then the daily updates then the 'let-down' of it being over every time.

To me it looks a bit ridiculous. But I get that she thinks everyone wants to go and is probably jealous of her. It's her little claim to fame so I wouldn't piss in her cornflakes publicly but yes secretly I think try hard.

Dh and I were just discussing taking dd's to a music festival next year or the year after bit it would never be Glastonbury. You couldn't pay me to go there.

ForalltheSaints · 23/06/2017 21:50

The tent thing and the chemical toilets put me off. Happy to go to a music festival for the day.

Letting down the family members who have performed there though- one is there this year.

CerealShopper · 23/06/2017 21:51

I used to go every year in the 90s and 00s (when we could find a way in for free!), and have paid to go a few times since, and I love it.

This year I'll be taking my dd6 along on Sunday for her first Glasto experience. We are all very excited!

Sittinginthesun · 23/06/2017 21:58

I went in '95, '97 and '98 and every year I still get a pang and think I should try for tickets next year. Trying to convince ds2 he'd enjoy it (ds1 would hate it!).

I've had the coverage on all evening, had some festival food, and a beer, which will have to do for now.

annandale · 23/06/2017 22:01

I have a friend who goes every time (she gets work shifts there if she misses out on a ticket). I love that she loves it so much and enjoy seeing her updates. I also liked the Julian Temple film and like seeing the odd bit of it about two minutes on the telly

But I remember asking my mum if I could go to Glastonbury aged 17 and she said no and I was SO relieved Grin Obviously if I was asking permission at that age I wasn't the right sort of person. I always had the impression it was rougher in the 80s. I had a friend who climbed the fence back in the early days of more security, and he dropped over into the 'right' side of the fence, was immediately mugged for all his money and was left with 10p for the weekend and a musty Mars Bar in his back pocket. He still stayed.

My only real festival experience was one day at the Fleadh near Tipperary. That was pretty wild but nothing terrifying happened and I reckon that was enough for a lifetime. Confirmed by a daytrip to Cornbury which was like a long walk listening to Radio 2, I'm sure my blood pressure dropped but I can be bored in cheaper ways.

JennyOnAPlate · 23/06/2017 22:04

I'm with you op. I hate crowds, hate tents and have a weird phobia of portaloos. If you were going to pay me to go I'd need at least 10k!
