To ask if you charge your phone overnight?

The fire at grenfell is heartbreaking and it's made me revise fire prevention rules.

One of those is to not charge your phone overnight, something that I do every night.

AIBU to ask how many of you also do this? And also those who don't, how do you find the time to give it a full charge if you spend most of the day out of the house.

Never. I charge it when I get home, in the living room. Charger always unplugged after use.

Yukbuck · 15/06/2017 11:40

I admit I charge mine overnight due to habit because in the past I had a phone that ran out of battery quickly and one time it died overnight and didn't wake me up in time for work.
I will stop doing this though.

It's easy to find the time. Just plug it in as soon as you return from work.

UpOnDown · 15/06/2017 11:40

I always charge mine in the evening.

RedheadLover · 15/06/2017 11:41

I always charge my phone overnight and had never heard until now that it could be a fire risk Sad

Testarossa1 · 15/06/2017 11:45

Get a wall socket with usb charging points. Takes away the need for the plug, which is what gets hot, sometimes to the point of overheating and setting on fire.

Ivydalegirl · 15/06/2017 11:47

NEVER EVER, I'm very safety conscious and turn off everything that isn't necessary before bed. I close all doors too. A fire in the night is my worst fear. I couldn't sleep last night thinking about that awful tragedy and what those poor people went through.

MelinaMercury · 15/06/2017 11:47

I did. Last night I purposely made sure not to and plan on charging it in the evening before bed from now on.

All switches are put off, bar the fridge, at night anyway.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 11:49

No never. It's something I've always been paranoid about.

WhooooAmI24601 · 15/06/2017 11:51

Nope mine is charged on an iPad stand in the kitchen before bedtime next to the watches. Nothing is left on charge overnight or when we go out, tumble dryer only used when we're in the house, downstairs doors all closed when we go to bed. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in three places around the house all linked to one another so if one goes off, they all do.

WingMirrorSpider · 15/06/2017 11:52

I always do. Mine's on a speaker dock so it's also my clock radio alarm. Is the risk the same with them as the charger cables? do I need to rethink? Worried now.

MatildaTheCat · 15/06/2017 11:52

I did but won't now. Unsure about iPad though as it takes hours and hours to charge and am usually using it on and off all day. Does that also pose a risk?

steppemum · 15/06/2017 11:52

3 phones (2 teens and mine) charged in kitchen overnight every night.

I had no idea it was a fire prevention rule. The charges are turned off after use (but the one in my bedroom isn't!)

Foniks · 15/06/2017 11:52

I do, but it's plugged into a safety extension that cuts out power at the slightest hint of anything. It can be annoying, because I simply can't plug some things into it because it'll cut off power, but it's a good safety feature.
I hope that will help me if anything happens.

user1471545174 · 15/06/2017 11:52

Never, fire risk, especially with people buying knock-off chargers.

Coddiwomple · 15/06/2017 11:55

always.

I also leave machines running overnight, it's only a tiny risk (no discussing the horrible Greenfell inferno here). It's a risk to leave a fridge/freezer running too, but you can't switch them off at night so fingers crossed.

caz323 · 15/06/2017 11:56

Never. Am also paranoid about it.
Also think I should break the very bad habit of sleeping with the TV on standby. I set the timer and fall asleep before it switches off. Surely I can't be the only one who does this?

iseenodust · 15/06/2017 11:56

I do sometimes charge it overnight but only ever on the kitchen work surface. We have smoke detectors upstairs and downstairs. Don't use dishwasher etc overnight.

iseenodust · 15/06/2017 11:59

user14715 the obvious way there to minimise risk is not to buy a knock-off charger.

MackerelOfFact · 15/06/2017 11:59

I always do, because it's my alarm. I have a plug socket with USB sockets built into it though, and put my phone on a ceramic drinks coaster which offers some protection if it overheats.

araiwa · 15/06/2017 11:59

Every night

TellMeItsNotTrue · 15/06/2017 11:59

No, it's also not great for your phone to be left charging once it has reached full charge so that is what stopped me doing it initially

I charge in the evening and then plug it in as soon as I wake up if I didn't get enough charge the night before

Bobbins43 · 15/06/2017 12:00

I'm another one who didn't know this was a fire risk...

StripeyCurtains · 15/06/2017 12:01

So those of you that don't ever leave them on do you turn everything else off as well?

TVs, microwave, ovens, alarm clocks that aren't battery run, basically anything that is on a standby mode should therefore have a fire risk as power is being drawn to it.

MackerelOfFact · 15/06/2017 12:03

These are the sockets I have: www.screwfix.com/p/lap-13a-1-gang-sp-switched-socket-2-gang-usb-charger-port-polished-chrome/7271f

user1492692527 · 15/06/2017 12:03

I thought they said it was a fridge that caused the fire? Don't think you'll find people unplugging those!
