To ask if you charge your phone overnight?

JustALittleQuestion · 15/06/2017 11:35

The fire at grenfell is heartbreaking and it's made me revise fire prevention rules.

One of those is to not charge your phone overnight, something that I do every night.

AIBU to ask how many of you also do this? And also those who don't, how do you find the time to give it a full charge if you spend most of the day out of the house.

Never. I always unplug the charging station and the computer before I go to bed/out. DH thinks I'm crazy, but he's used to it now. I swear the chargers get warm even if nothing is charging, but he doesn't believe me. I charge everything in the living room during the day when I'm home.

I unplug everything that doesn't have an on/off switch. And we had a super sensitive trip switch installed when we moved here.

EssentialHummus · 15/06/2017 12:27

I have always assumed and hoped that if you buy generally quality made equipment (not knock off chargers etc) and have an up to date tested electrical system that leaving things plugged in over night should not be a problem

I agree with this. Those "bargain" chargers from the market stall/low-end shops/certain websites are cheap for a reason, and I expect have lower safety standards.

I do charge overnight, next to my bed.

DimplesToadfoot · 15/06/2017 12:27

I charge mine up when I put the pc on,

I also have those remote control plug sockets, every night before I go to bed I just go around with the remote 4 clicks and all plugs bar the fridge are off, I've never done it for safety precautions purely to save costs on Electricity bonus is I'm a bit safer too

228agreenend · 15/06/2017 12:28

Teens charge their phone overnight.

I grew up in a household where everything was unplugged (except fridge). However, DH is a ex-fireman and is not that bothered.

disneykid · 15/06/2017 12:28

Every night

scottishdiem · 15/06/2017 12:29

Was it Michael McIntyre that had routine about people not trusting their televisions when going off on holiday but had a much more trusting relationship with their fridge freezers.

Between 2010 & 2014, consumer group Which! has found that fridge freezers are over three times more likely to cause a fire than a television. In fact, central heating causes more fires than televisions. How many people turn their central heating off (the whole system) off each night?

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:30

Me.

SandyDenny · 15/06/2017 12:31

I don't turn things off at night, I once counted up and I have nearly 40 different things plugged, no way am I going to turn them all off at the wall every night.

Those of you who do switch things off - how long does it take and what happens if you need to turn your bedside light on in the night say, do you have to fumble about in the dark? Do your children not have bedside lights they can switch on if they wake up and are a bit scared in the dark?

Truckingalong · 15/06/2017 12:32

Plug in air freshners are the single biggest cause of domestic fires. Never leave them plugged in if you're out.

DollyMcDolly · 15/06/2017 12:32

I always charge mine overnight, same with DH. The chargers are proper apple ones. I'm in a new build and if there's ever any problem the trip switch goes. I leave most things on stand by tbh.

ExplodedCloud · 15/06/2017 12:33

I do. I must admit I thought twice about it last night.
All phones and tablets on charge overnight actually Blush The chargers are all 'proper' ones but maybe we need to rethink this.
Is a USB port on a plug a safer choice officially?

JustArandomUser · 15/06/2017 12:33

I charge mine overnight all the time. I only use high quality chargers though, no cheap knockoffs from the market.

SandyDenny · 15/06/2017 12:34

Also if you are going to switch everything off at night do you switch everything off when you go out during the day? If not you're not really assessing the risk properly, things don't only go on fire during the night or are you just worried about the risk to people rather than property?

ratspeaker · 15/06/2017 12:37

Never.
We once had a charger explode. Luckily
I was in the same room and able to deal with it before any damage was done.
We never leave vapourisers charging unattended either

SandyDenny · 15/06/2017 12:37

Not sure where you get that info from truckingalong, common sense would tell you that can't be true as the proportion of households that have a plug in air freshener won't be very large at all.

BangkokBlues · 15/06/2017 12:37

I now have a USB socket, but I used to charge overnight anyway.

I only use actual apple chargers. You buy one for £1.79 off ebay from china and you get issues.

I also tumble dry and use the washing machine when I'm not in the house. Leave my fridge, microwave etc plugged in.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:39

I switch things off at the wall when I've finished using them. Whether that is 1pm or 1am. It's hardwired (to use a pun) into me at this point.

Nicknacky · 15/06/2017 12:39

I bought a charger from what I thought was a reputable seller and he heat coming off the plug when I pulled it out was frightening. I used it once and when I compared it I realised it was a fake. I would never take a risk which an appliance and was caught out but it got chucked out and I triple check now when I buy one.

I dread to think what potentially could have happened. I think I, like many others have had a think about fire safety in their own home and I will be making changes and preparing myself and the kids on what to do if necessary.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:40

how long does it take and what happens if you need to turn your bedside light on in the night say

I leave bedside lamps plugged in. But they're not on standby.

AdoraBell · 15/06/2017 12:40

Truckingalong what about the plug in things like mozzie repelant/pet calming liquids? We have anxious dogs and use a plug in thingy

dataandspot · 15/06/2017 12:41

I turn my central heating system off when I am not using it.

Does anyone remember the baby/toddler killed by a tank that over heated and the water tank burst and killed the child in the room below?

DimplesToadfoot · 15/06/2017 12:42

funnily enough my remote control that turns off all my plug sockets before I go up to bed on a night, also works during the day, how bizarre

lilyborderterrier · 15/06/2017 12:45

This is making me think ! I leave my phone on charge overnight in the kitchen. I'll be stopping that now !!

SandyDenny · 15/06/2017 12:47

Dimples - where can you buy a remore control that switches off plugs at the wall?

How does that work? There's no way that my plug socket switches would move to the off position without actual pressure on them, how does a remote control do that?

LittleHo · 15/06/2017 12:51

I'd be more worried about people using scented candles.
