To ask if you charge your phone overnight?

The fire at grenfell is heartbreaking and it's made me revise fire prevention rules.

One of those is to not charge your phone overnight, something that I do every night.

AIBU to ask how many of you also do this? And also those who don't, how do you find the time to give it a full charge if you spend most of the day out of the house.

3 x phones, 2 x ipads on charge every night. everything else left on or on standby. we never buy dodgy electrical goods, have 3 fire alarms in a medium sized 3 bed house, and a couple of those little pointy hammers to break the double glazing if needed upstairs.

I wouldn't leave tumble drier on while out the house, but I do setup washing machine on delay so it is finished for me getting up in the morning.

we did have an electrical fire once in our old 1st floor flat, but it was a wire coming out of our fuse box/melting the fuse box. Thankfully I was in the bedroom with the fuse box (dh was in the shower) and I could smell it when it started, I checked in the cupboard and the flames were only 5-6 inches high, so tentatively switched off the whole box (which hadn't tripped yet) and literally blew it out.

PickAChew · 15/06/2017 12:52

I could only find this one with a quick google, but DH found a good review where loads of aftermarket chargers were dismantled and so many of them make these shortcuts.

www.geek.com/apple/why-cheap-phone-chargers-cause-fires-1593785/

We have a few of the IKEA chargers for spares because these came up good in the review he found. That said, he's a bugger for leaving chargers plugged in a switched on with nothing even charging from them.

ShushAlexa · 15/06/2017 12:52

No way.

scottishdiem · 15/06/2017 12:52

So many options SandyDenny - www.maplin.ie/p/remote-controlled-mains-sockets-set-3-pack-n79ka

Thats a clunky old school option. Can get get sockets and and systems than can be used via apps on a phone.

crocodilesoup · 15/06/2017 12:52

Would it be cruel to have a fire drill in the night to see if the smoke alarm actually wake dh and dc up? I would like to see if they would put our fire plan into action, I suspect not! I would have to stand under the smoke alarm with a match I suppose..
Will need to revise charger arrangments.

dotandstripe · 15/06/2017 12:53

No. Mine charges really quickly (Samsung S7 with fast charging enabled) so I do it in the evening and top up the charge in the morning before going out.

PinkPeppers · 15/06/2017 12:54

Charged over night here too.
Mainly because otherwise I would be the one to go through all the different gizmos, incl iPads that the dcs need for school (and that need to be fully charged in the am).

I agree that most appliances are staying switched on all day long wo any issue (Im thinking dishwasher for example or alarm clock etc.

Looking at what sort electrical equipments usually cause problems, you get the usual overloaded plug/extension, faulty wiring, writing going under rugs etc...
Nothing about telephones in particular iyswim

bluetongue · 15/06/2017 12:55

Always charge overnight. Try not to when I'm not in the house but forget my iPad is charging sometimes.

Never leave my washing machine on while I'm out. It has form for washing getting stuck and madly beeping at me to rescue it.

SandyDenny · 15/06/2017 12:58

Thanks for the link scottishdiem.

I don't have ages to spend researching but it looks like those allow you to turn the appliances on and off but as they are still plugged into the socket you aren't actually cutting off the supply at the wall. It doesn't seem to be any different to switching the appliance off manually but maybe the description of the product isn't as clear as it could be

PickAChew · 15/06/2017 12:58

Fires aren't the only reason not to run a washer while out of the hosue, btw. We had a capped off pipe that used to rattle a bit when the water pressure changed eg when switching off a cold tap, or when the washer stopped filling. Though nothing of it. Then, one morning, I ran the shower to rinse out the bath and the cap blew off it - turned out that it had completely perished, but we weren't to know that because it was all boxed in (and were unaware that it was a capped off pipe at all until this happened).

If I'd had the washer on, while I did the school run, that could have triggered it and I would have got home to a flooded house. As it was, as I was home, all that happened was the (downstairs, thankfully) bathroom floor got a really good wash.

Allthewaves · 15/06/2017 13:00

Never

user1471545174 · 15/06/2017 13:01

iseenodust I wouldn't buy a knock-off charger, but other people might and they are normally the kind of people who think nothing will ever happen to them. I am not in a detached property so their bad choices (false economy, unnecessary risk-taking) still matter to me.

paap1975 · 15/06/2017 13:08

We never charge phones or anything else overnight. We also never leave chargers plugged in when not in use. In fact, we keep most things unplugged unless we are using them (including toaster, kettle, microwave). For those where it's a faff, we just flip the switch instead.

Wormulonian · 15/06/2017 13:11

Same here paap but I do worry about the fridge.

OwlOfBrown · 15/06/2017 13:13

Never. I have an ancient phone that holds its charge for a week. I charge it in the car on my drive to work.

My going to bed routine includes checking all the doors are locked and that keys are in the usual places, and making sure everything is switched off. I will only use the washing machine and dishwasher when someone is home and awake as I know people who have had house fires caused by both those appliances.

BuzzKillington · 15/06/2017 13:16

We do.

We probable have 4 phones on charge every night.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/06/2017 13:16

mobile.nytimes.com/2016/08/22/technology/personaltech/charge-phone-overnight.html

Seems like it's only for ancient phones. I will continue to charge over night .

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/06/2017 13:17

I don't leave the house with dishwasher, washing machine or drier on though.

thepatchworkcat · 15/06/2017 13:26

I always charge mine overnight Blush it's a proper apple charger though. I also frequently have the dishwasher and tumble dryer running after we've gone to bed or out. Didn't really know this was a bad thing. Will be rethinking. Might be hard work with DH, it's enough of a battle to get him to lock doors and shut windows at bed time Hmm

muckypup73 · 15/06/2017 13:34

Its a fire hazard to leave phones on charge overnight, its also a fire hazard to have a lamp and leaving plugs plugged in an on overnight, and candles lit, my uncle is a fireman and he told me this years ago.

sherbetpips · 15/06/2017 13:42

always charge it overnight

Slimthistime · 15/06/2017 13:42

everything that can be switched off when I'm not here or asleep, is switched off. That includes the router etc.

I don't use candles. Tbh this initially started because I'm an anxious person and live in a high rise but now I think it's a good plan even if you don't live in a high rise or have anxiety. My colleague - in a house - nodded off while a candle was lit and woke up with a fire all round her! She's fine, but she doesn't use candles now either.

bigbluebus · 15/06/2017 13:43

I do sometimes but I'm oten in during the day so can easily charge mine up then. DH plugs his in in the kitchen and I assume DS charges his up but he keeps his in his bedroom so I don't actually know. We have 4 mains smoke alarms so I hope we would be alerted to any smoke quickly. I know prevention is better than cure but there are other electrical items switched on at night so the risk is always there anyway. I never put the tumble drier on when I'm out but will sometimes run the washing machine or diswasher - although the latter is usually run in the evening.

Slimthistime · 15/06/2017 13:43

PS if you're on the go all the time, do you have like 2 hours when you get a home to get a full charge immediately?

I have economy 7 so everything is cheaper to run overnight but I don't do it because in a large block of small flats, it's not fair to run washing overnight, as well as the possible fire/leak stuff.

heron98 · 15/06/2017 13:45

I am at work all day and usually out in the eve so the only time I have to charge my phone is overnight
