To ask if you charge your phone overnight?

The fire at grenfell is heartbreaking and it's made me revise fire prevention rules.

One of those is to not charge your phone overnight, something that I do every night.

AIBU to ask how many of you also do this? And also those who don't, how do you find the time to give it a full charge if you spend most of the day out of the house.

I do charge it overnight, using USB port in the wall. The risk is very small. We have many alarms throughout (in all bedrooms) and a tested fire escape plan so I feel ok about it.

DrDreReturns · 15/06/2017 12:03

Never. I generally charge it at work!
I am very anal about this kind of thing though. I always turn the TV off at the wall at bed time etc.

specialsubject · 15/06/2017 12:05

once a week or less which is all it needs. The tablet and laptop do need frequent charging but are always unplugged and off at night.

the rubbish-ness of smartphones is something that is long overdue for addressing. Longer battery life should be a selling point, not being bigger, heavier and whizzier.

elQuintoConyo · 15/06/2017 12:06

I have never charged my phone overnight. My current phone takes about 1hr30 to go from 8% to 100% charged. I have a plug-in battery thingy that'll give me more juice if it runs out during the day, but rarely have the need to use it.

I unplug most things at night and alwatys sleep in at least pants and tshirt in case i'm flung over a fireman's shoulder.

There's also a rope ladder under ds' bed that we can fling out the window to climb down, if need be (3 floors up, no shed/garage roof to jump onto).

Fire alarm checked regularly, gas checked regularly.

When i was at boardi g svhool ecery child had a 'fire pack' at the end of the bed containing a change of clothes and bottle of water. Whenever there was a fire drill, we had to take these with us (unless you were too cool for school, in which case you got a detention Grin). We now, as a family, all have our own fire pack handy. Ds is still v young, so doesn't know about these things but us adults do. Can't be too prepared.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:06

So those of you that don't ever leave them on do you turn everything else off as well?

I turn everything off at the wall aside from the fridge freezer.

scottishdiem · 15/06/2017 12:06

I have various things plugged in over night. This includes the fridge freezer. I trust that device so I trust all the other ones (caveat - I use surge protector extensions throughout the flat and a robust USB hub for charging phone and kindle).

Screwinthetuna · 15/06/2017 12:07

Yes, always do

Justaboy · 15/06/2017 12:10

Decent approved original equipment then fine, imported dodgy NOT original equipment then maybe not!

DJBaggySmalls · 15/06/2017 12:10

Up til now I've used a surge protected socket but I've stopped doing that now. I do have fire blankets, we'd like an escape ladder but they are too expensive. We're looking at making one from a scramble net.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/06/2017 12:11

Every night. It's beside my bed as it's my alarm as well.

I didn't think people still turned off everything at night. What about things like Sky boxes? Don't you record anything after you go to bed?

I charge my daughter's for her in my bedroom (to ensure she doesn't have it overnight) but to be honest I leave everything on standby all the time which is probably an awful habit to have got into. I might seriously need to rethink this tbh.

shouldnthavesaid · 15/06/2017 12:15

I plug mine in overnight every night but only because I work 7-7 with no access to charger so need to charge it as I'm sleeping. In fairness it and my bedside lamp are the only things on all night, everything else is off , and it's kept right beside my bed.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:15

I'm anti-Sky.

delilahbucket · 15/06/2017 12:16

I charge mine at night. It only takes an hour or so and my charger turns itself off when it is done so it does not get hot.
We also only buy authentic chargers.

Cherrycola123 · 15/06/2017 12:17

I bought a portable charger from amazon and I use that overnight if I must charge my phone.

BloodWorries · 15/06/2017 12:18

DP leaves all his gadgets and gizmos charging/on all the time. It's a pain in the arse.

I did run around the house and turn the sockets off at the wall, with everything still plugged in before we went on holiday. But even then we have pets that require heat/lights/water filters/pumps etc. These obviously have to be on all the time, as does the fridge and freezers. So actually a lot of things were still running.
DP point of leaving everything else on the rest of the time is hard to fight... if the PC is a risk then why isn't the pet stuff or freezer an issue?

And we both leave things on to charge overnight, with me it's mainly my laptop (which take ages to turn back on after being turned off properly and can't hold a charge anymore), my phone and my ipad.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 15/06/2017 12:19

Which chargers turn themselves off please? Would like to buy them to use when travelling.

AdoraBell · 15/06/2017 12:20

No. Charge it in the kitchen and it's on the table by the bed overnight. DH charges his overnight, also In the kitchen.

He is super aware of fire risk. Many years working in insurance and he's seen photos of the aftermath of fires when dealing with the insurance claims.

His family take piss out of him for checking fire escape routes in public buildings and unplugging things not in use.

SingaporeSlander · 15/06/2017 12:20

I have always assumed and hoped that if you buy generally quality made equipment (not knock off chargers etc) and have an up to date tested electrical system that leaving things plugged in over night should not be a problem. Any fault or power surge should be corrected by the electrical switchboard flipping, or the fuse in the item shorting.

I appreciate this is not 100% failsafe, but believe it is low risk. I would not leave a tumble dryer on while out.

mayoli · 15/06/2017 12:21

Nope, I charge it in the morning

SingaporeSlander · 15/06/2017 12:21

Also wouldn't use plug in air fresheners.

CrewsInn · 15/06/2017 12:21

Nothing is ever turned off in this house, nothing.
Sky, computers, chargers, tv, all on permanent standby Blush.

squoosh · 15/06/2017 12:23

Also wouldn't use plug in air fresheners

Those things should be banned for offences against the nose!

SingaporeSlander · 15/06/2017 12:25

In fact thinking about it if you are concerned about fire safety an full electrical test of your system is a very good annual check routine to get into.
