Newborns and trolleys

Ok I don't get the etiquette here

Going to the supermarket on my own with my 6 week old DD. I can't leave her in the car to get a trolley -its that debate isn't it? Bit like if you should leave a baby in the car when you go and pay for petrol, anyway I digress...

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to. And if they do have one can i wrestle it out of a group of trolleys whilst holding her in the car seat (she is not a light 6 week old! I love her chunky baby rolls though)

So can I put her car seat into a normal trolley? Do i go and get one of those trolleys with the built in baby seat and then take her out of her car seat and put her in it? I have a big pushchair so usually put a basket in the basket underneath my pushchair and use that. But today i need to do a big shop and it got me thinking about trolleys. Maybe i should just shop online????? I wish supermarkets would have a collection of baby suitable trolleys parked next to the parent and child parking spaces. Advice/piss taking greatly received.

I pushed dd into the shop, went to customer service. Tgey got a trolley and followed me pushing dd whilst i shopped! Tesco was the best to do this in.

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 12:48

Wow! Not sure i could do that LondonRach. Fair play to you.

I would shop online for a big shop. For an odds and ends top up shop I used to put the car seat into one of the small flat bed trollies.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/06/2017 12:49

I took mine out of the car seat and put him in one of the trolley with a lie down seat. Seems to be far more of them than the car seat ones.
Or if he was asleep I'd carry him over in the car seat and put him next to the wall whilst I wrangled the trollies.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 13/06/2017 12:49

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to.

Take car seat over to trolleys. Put on ground to get trolley out. If they don't have one that straps a car seat onto (I've never used one of those), either:

use one with a newborn seat thing, put baby in carseat inside the trolley and drop car seat back off at the car

OR

Get regular trolley and put baby in carseat in trolley

Can't remember what I did! Online shopping Grin Or sling :)

Just some suggestions, I remember being so confused about these logistics.

Enjoy!

allisbright · 13/06/2017 12:50

Maybe consider using a sling instead?

isittheholidaysyet · 13/06/2017 12:52

I would take mine out and put in a lie down seat.
If not I'd probably go back to the car and use a sling.
I have put car seat in normal trolley before, but then there's no room for the shopping.

(I'm short, so if I used a car seat trolly I couldn't see where I was going!)

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 12:52

My ideal would be car seat in trolley (maybe a smaller trolley) but not sure if this would be weird? Hmm

witsender · 13/06/2017 12:53

Sling or one of those laid back seats in trolley, maybe with blanket under for comfort.

londonrach · 13/06/2017 12:53

Op...the staff were queuing up to push my dd. Seriously ask they do it for alot more people than you think and they open a till for me if its busy every time.

waitforitfdear · 13/06/2017 12:54

Ah those juggling days. Do what you need to do one a case by Case basis and book a neck and shoulder massage as often as you can afford to help the muscle cramps. Grin

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/06/2017 12:54

I'm short, so if I used a car seat trolly I couldn't see where I was going!

I'm 5ft10 so not short and even I struggle to see with the car seat trollies.

I have just put the car seat in a normal trolley on multiple occasions s however as pp said there is no room for actual shopping then.

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 12:54

Not sure about slings she is a very hot baby and isn't keen on being confined she likes to stretch out.

You do seem to be making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill. You can put the car seat on the ground while you wrestle the trolley out if you have to. Or if you were going to take her out of her car seat to put her in one of those baby seats that are built in to the trolley, common sense would be to leave her car seat in the car and carry her across to the trolley park without the heavy seat - why would you carry the seat with you?

Oscillationss · 13/06/2017 12:54

I used to put DS2 in the trolley in the car set as often places only had trolleys with one child seat and DS1 was only 18m so I couldn't rely on him to walk. Only problem was less trolley space.

AppleMagic · 13/06/2017 12:55

You can leave baby in the car whilst you get a trolley.

If it's a really long way then take the car seat with you. Put it on floor. Sort trolley. Pick it up.

I wouldn't put a car seat on a shallow trolley though.

FATEdestiny · 13/06/2017 12:55

You can leave her in the car as long as you don't forget about her. The risk of babies in cars is
(a) "Fatal Distraction" - getting distracted and forgetting the child is there, so leaving them in the car
(b) Overheating. But for a matter of minutes to fetch a trolley (or pay for petrol) this is a non-issue. Leave a window open if it's sweltering.
(c) Theft of the car. Lock the car and/or be within sight.

muckypup73 · 13/06/2017 12:55

I used to take him out the car, carryhim to the trolley and put him in one with a baby seat in it, its so simple.

KP86 · 13/06/2017 12:55

I would also leave baby in the car for 1 minute to go get a trolley. Same as I leave him in the car to pay for petrol.

MrsOverTheRoad · 13/06/2017 12:58

As a non driver I used to push my pram into the shop and do about 5 shops a week! All I could carry was one basket's worth.

Drove me mad.

Whitelisbon · 13/06/2017 12:59

I park reasonably close to the trollies, go get one and bring it back to the car to unload the kids. I discovered when I had twins that it was physically impossible to do it any other way, and, while strapped securely in their car seat, and you fairly close, for the 30 seconds it takes it's highly unlikely that anything is going to happen.
However, for the love of god, don't use those stupid car seat trolleys. You can't see over, you can't throw anything in without walking round, and the car seat wobbles alarmingly in them, generally waking baby up. Use the ones with the plastic baby seats in but put a blanket in first, or shove baby in a sling.

Spudlet · 13/06/2017 13:03

You really can leave her in the car to get a trolley. It's hardly like you'll take more than a moment, or be out of sight. She'll be fine - I doubt she'll even wake up. P&C parking is normally close to the doors anyway.

Or, if you only need one or two things, use your pushchair and get a basket. It's perfectly doable, if a little interesting on the steering.

Don't worry, once you've done it a few times you won't even remember what worried you. Then they start walking and you have a whole new set of challenges. Ds always seems to take a shine to and subsequent grab at things in glass bottles 🙄

Spudlet · 13/06/2017 13:05

Ps slings are a bloody godsend, it's definitely worth finding your local sling library and trying a few out! Makes life much, much simpler.

skyzumarubble · 13/06/2017 13:05

online for weekly shop, pick up other bits as needed. dts never went in the trolley as babies, apart from anything else they look hugely uncomfortable.

Northgate · 13/06/2017 13:08

My youngest is 6 months old now.

I've always used the trolleys with the built in lying down baby seat, so car seat always stays in the car. There's usually more of those trolleys too.

I try and park close to the trolley bays - if I get parked nearby, I leave baby in the car while I go get a trolley. If I'm not near enough to the trolley bay, I take baby out of the car seat and walk with him in my arms over to the trolleys.
