Newborns and trolleys

Ok I don't get the etiquette here

Going to the supermarket on my own with my 6 week old DD. I can't leave her in the car to get a trolley -its that debate isn't it? Bit like if you should leave a baby in the car when you go and pay for petrol, anyway I digress...

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to. And if they do have one can i wrestle it out of a group of trolleys whilst holding her in the car seat (she is not a light 6 week old! I love her chunky baby rolls though)

So can I put her car seat into a normal trolley? Do i go and get one of those trolleys with the built in baby seat and then take her out of her car seat and put her in it? I have a big pushchair so usually put a basket in the basket underneath my pushchair and use that. But today i need to do a big shop and it got me thinking about trolleys. Maybe i should just shop online????? I wish supermarkets would have a collection of baby suitable trolleys parked next to the parent and child parking spaces. Advice/piss taking greatly received.

I used to put my newborn DDs into the lie-down seat in the supermarket trolley this was mainly because I couldn't see over the top of the trolleys that had the car seat bed

waitforitfdear · 13/06/2017 13:09

Slings arnt for every baby. My second and fourth baby hated them. Some babies don't do tight cuddles or holding they like to stretch out.

Imaginosity · 13/06/2017 13:10

I just leave the baby in the car and get the trolley. If its a hot day i'd leave a window open even though i'd only be gone a moment. Its a tiny, tiny risk. Much bigger risk to travel in a car at all but most people don't think twice about that.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 13/06/2017 13:11

Obviously you just put the car seat directly into the trolley, therefore also creating the pleasingly amusing impression that you have picked up a baby alongside your bread and milk.

rightsofwomen · 13/06/2017 13:11

Take baby out of car. Walk to trolley carrying baby in arms. Put baby in lie down trolley seat (with a muslin or light blanket underneath for comfort). Do shopping.

If you've parked near trolley park then when you come to unload you can put baby in car and quickly put trolley back in park.

Have I missed something?

I used to put DS car seat in the trolley when shopping in Aldi - not a deep one obviously! - one of those half ones that meant he could see me. I just used to pack the shopping in around him, although I was only shopping for DH and I and used to split the shop, and when going into Sainsburys after DH would push him in the pram.
Or sometimes DH would carry him in the carrier.
It was only when DS was big enough to sit in the seat that I saw both Aldi and Sainsburys have those trolleys with baby seats. Palm to forehead moment!

Oh my goodness Grinpark car. Get out, lock car. Get trolley, walk back, put baby in trolley (in car seat trolley if they're asleep and they have one), or take them out and put in a baby trolley. Do shopping Smilewhy can't you leave them in the car for a minute while you get a trolley? Am I missing something? (I have a nearly 8 month old and that's what I've always done, didn't know I shouldn't?)

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 13/06/2017 13:13

Tesco click and collect is fab. I used to put baby in car seat in trolley but that does restrict amount you can buy. I also would leave baby in car and take trolley to car same with returning trolley. I parked in p&c and it's literally a stones throw from trolley Park.

talkingtofrank · 13/06/2017 13:14

Is she your pfb by any chance? 😄

DorothyHarris · 13/06/2017 13:15

crazy this is exactly what I do, I've been doing this since I had my twins 15m ago and they are fine 😀

PenguinsAreAce · 13/06/2017 13:17

Sling.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 13/06/2017 13:17

I used to put DS car seat in the trolley when shopping in Aldi - not a deep one obviously!

Why not? Confused

TriJo · 13/06/2017 13:18

Park car, put baby in sling, go about business as normal. Simple.

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 13:23

She's my first but I'm not precious at all, I just don't know the "rules" or etiquette. I fear being screamed at by another mum for leaving my baby in the car to get a trolley/pay for petrol or getting weird looks for putting her in her car seat into a trolley. I might try one of those lay down seat ones as I haven't tried that yet, but then is the fear of her waking up and crying all the way round the shop haha. I need to go and just try and stop being scared of the looks whatever i choose to do!

Stretchy wrap so that you put the sling on before the baby (which is easier, if you're new to it). I couldn't park anywhere near my old house, so I'd put on sling, insert baby, get to car, put baby in car seat. Then the other way around at the supermarket.

If she's too hot, just put her in the sling to lock up the car and get a trolley. If she's happy, just leave her in there.

jnl0612 · 13/06/2017 13:24

I've never been a fan of slings buttttt
It's so much easier.
This morning I shopped with my 8 week of DS in a sling. Pushed the trolley easily, packed the shopping etc
I did have to get the car wash guy in the car park to fasten the carrier tho. 😂

RB68 · 13/06/2017 13:27

Park in Mother and baby and fetch trolley, load child and shop. No M&B parking then park near where trolleys are or find the trolley folk and ask them to get you one.

GahBuggerit · 13/06/2017 13:28

Am I missing something? Can you not just take her out of her car seat and carry her to the trolleys? Or shove the car seat into a big trolley?

Im scratching my head at your head scratching about this Grin

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/06/2017 13:31

At that age I would put ds in a sling.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 13/06/2017 13:33

Use a sling or do on-line shopping. Reliable on-line groceries weren't yet an option with mine, and I'm too short to see over the top of the car seat trollies.

I had lots of help in my local Waitrose, like the help given by Tesco above. Go shopping with pushchair and someone helped! A couple of times they even put the stuff in the car for me Grin. I ended up getting deliveries of heavy stuff (it was the fresh stuff they couldn't cope with in the early days e.g. an order for rocket (organic) was substituted with a frozen organic random veg and not another bag of salad) and walking for fresh stuff most days.

Now I just love my deliveries.

sticklebrix · 13/06/2017 13:34

Do big shops online

Sling (you can get mesh ones for hot weather)

Put car seat in trolley if they don't have a baby seat attachment, hang shopping bag over the handle

Ask staff to locate a trolley with baby seat attachment

I never left the baby in the car even to get a trolley. Was too worried about forgetting to retrieve the baby in my sleep deprived state

user1487941567 · 13/06/2017 13:34

I'm going to have this issue soon with a smal toddler and a newborn. I think it's going to have to ve online shops again. I usually leave my trolley on the walkway by the parent spaces so the next person doesn't have to either carry the baby or leave the baby to get a trolley. The trolley park is miles away at our sainsburys.

user1487941567 · 13/06/2017 13:35

Although yeah, of course you can put a car seat in to a big trolley. It's not great safety wise but no one would judge you for it.

sticklebrix · 13/06/2017 13:35

Oh, and ignore nasty looks from people if the baby cries. They have to be seriously unreasonable to be offended by a 6 week old crying in a public place.

BestZebbie · 13/06/2017 13:39

Carry the baby to the trolley. Then on the way back, take the trolley to the car to unload it, take the trolley back and carry the baby with you from there back to the car again.

However, around here you can usually park within about 6 cars of a trolley, esp if you use the p&c spaces, so I'd just walk briskly to fetch the trolley whilst staying within sight of the car and come straight back with it for the baby.
