Newborns and trolleys

Ok I don't get the etiquette here

Going to the supermarket on my own with my 6 week old DD. I can't leave her in the car to get a trolley -its that debate isn't it? Bit like if you should leave a baby in the car when you go and pay for petrol, anyway I digress...

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to. And if they do have one can i wrestle it out of a group of trolleys whilst holding her in the car seat (she is not a light 6 week old! I love her chunky baby rolls though)

So can I put her car seat into a normal trolley? Do i go and get one of those trolleys with the built in baby seat and then take her out of her car seat and put her in it? I have a big pushchair so usually put a basket in the basket underneath my pushchair and use that. But today i need to do a big shop and it got me thinking about trolleys. Maybe i should just shop online????? I wish supermarkets would have a collection of baby suitable trolleys parked next to the parent and child parking spaces. Advice/piss taking greatly received.

I've nit read the whole thread but I would recommend not using the trolleys with a space for a car seat as the space for shopping is much smaller than a normal trolley and the car seat is at the exact rightheight to prevent you seeing anything or anybody, I was an absolute deadly weapon the one and only time I used this type of trolley.
The ones with the cradle bit worked much better for me; put a blanket on it so it's nice and soft and warm for baby.
A sling is also worth a shot although i found the checkout bit quite tricky with one as there is lots of leaning forward required at that point.

Good luck, you will find your own way in the end.

Just out car seat in trolley ? And try not to drop bakes beans on her Grin

Oneiroi · 13/06/2017 21:57

Internet shopping.

wonkylegs · 13/06/2017 22:09

DS1 I did shopping online
DS2 we used a sling, until he was big enough to sit (which he no loves at 1) in the trolley.

I am very short & have RA so could never lift a car seat into a trolley. Both my babies hated the trolley babyseats and screamed and screamed in them and my buggy and a basket could only do a limited shop, I also struggle to lift a basket of shopping anyway.

Both my boys are hot little things but we're fine in slings. Staff are always so helpful in my morrisons and because sling wearing isn't that common round here DS2 is well known by everybody, and after a year nearly all the staff know his name and talk to him as we go round which he adores and it makes shopping so much easier.

I always parked nearer the trolleys, I put the car seat in the trolley, ok there isn't much space but this way was a lot easier .

Screwinthetuna · 13/06/2017 22:25

I always put mine in the car seat right into the main part of the trolley and then just put the food around it

fabulous01 · 13/06/2017 22:29

Online all the way and I have never looked back. I still need to ooo to get small bits but girls are now 2 and it is a godsend

angelikacpickles · 13/06/2017 22:35

Of course you can leave the baby in the car for the 30 seconds it takes to go and grab a trolley. Park close to the trolley bay.

HeadDreamer · 14/06/2017 05:55

Online shop and travel system for the top up! I can't face the supermarket with kids in tow. My pushchair can take quite a bit underneath.

I would not leave a baby in car. I don't do it at the petrol station either. The Asda round my house has a pay at pump.

haveacupoftea · 14/06/2017 06:09

In answer to why doesn't everyone shop online - maternity leave is quite boring and even a trip to the supermarket can be a highlight of the day. Plus getting out and about and interacting with people is good for babies so the more you do it the better really.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 14/06/2017 07:38

I agree maternity leave is boring and getting out and about it important. I suppose I've just done that without doing a weekly shop at the supermarket and getting in a flap about what to do with my baby in a trolley. But then as I say, I don't have a car so it isn't really a sensible option for me anyway.

MuncheysMummy · 14/06/2017 08:40

No way would I leave in car seat whilst I drove to the shop then did a full bug shop then drive home way way too long for a newborn! Shock

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 14/06/2017 08:42

Muncheys the advice is up to two hours. You must live a long way from the supermarket if that process would take you much longer than that.

MoominFlaps · 14/06/2017 08:42

Maybe dispense with the hyperbole munch.

I'm expecting DC2, DC1 hated the supermarket (how? Why??) so sling was my only option. Now he refuses to go into the trolley seat and is too heavy for it anyway, but runs away if not in trolley. I've no idea what I'll do with two, but I feel I can't order online for delivery as I live beside Tesco and think they'll wonder how bloody lazy one person can be Grin

anchor9 · 14/06/2017 10:17

i leave the baby in the (locked, parked, alarm disabled, explosive free) car whilst I go and find trolley. sorry but I fail to see the danger in reality.

but actually, putting him in the sling is the real answer. my baby is velcro. in the trolley he is likely to scream. also i love to be one of those smug, serene sling mammys.

anchor9 · 14/06/2017 10:18

christ how distracted would I have to be to forget my baby. everything else is at high risk of being forgotten. baby not so much.

seafoodeatit · 14/06/2017 10:44

I've always just taken her out of the car seat and carried her over to the trolleys and used one with a baby insert. I don't drive though so those moments are far and few between, mostly what I do is park the buggy at customer services and use a baby seat trolley.

Oogle · 14/06/2017 10:47

Park near trolley park, leave child in car. Get trolley. Pop child in trolley. Shop.

Am I missing something here? To make your life 100% easier just do an online shop.

And go to Pay At Pump. Easy.

blue2014 · 14/06/2017 11:28

If it helps I felt exactly the same. I do it all online now

Goingtobeawesome · 14/06/2017 11:31

I took a thick blanket to line the baby seat scoopy thing and put the baby in it. If there wasn't one I'd use the pram and carry a basket. No big deal to carry baby to trolleys and then back to car to rethink if no trolleys.

isthistoonosy · 14/06/2017 11:34

I just pile the shopping on the pram around the kids, in the basket underneath, on the handle/ roof, at the sides of the kids etc but Ive a large double so have lots of space.
