Newborns and trolleys

Ok I don't get the etiquette here

Going to the supermarket on my own with my 6 week old DD. I can't leave her in the car to get a trolley -its that debate isn't it? Bit like if you should leave a baby in the car when you go and pay for petrol, anyway I digress...

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to. And if they do have one can i wrestle it out of a group of trolleys whilst holding her in the car seat (she is not a light 6 week old! I love her chunky baby rolls though)

So can I put her car seat into a normal trolley? Do i go and get one of those trolleys with the built in baby seat and then take her out of her car seat and put her in it? I have a big pushchair so usually put a basket in the basket underneath my pushchair and use that. But today i need to do a big shop and it got me thinking about trolleys. Maybe i should just shop online????? I wish supermarkets would have a collection of baby suitable trolleys parked next to the parent and child parking spaces. Advice/piss taking greatly received.

Wow I can't believe this has turned into a 4 page thread Grin Did you go OP? Which tactic did you use? Did you look around for what other parents were doing? I bet there was at least 1 carseat in a trolley. It's fine! :)

liquidrevolution · 13/06/2017 16:16

I had a hot DD too. She hated slings. She was not a clingy baby which was nice Grin.

I used to leave DD in the car and get a trolley. Usually the ones you can put a car seat on but if not one of the little bed ones. Actually there usually was one floating around the P&C spaces so I rarely went far.

Bearfrills · 13/06/2017 16:23

I think it's really mean to call the OP obtuse or say she has no commonsense, it's a valid question and there are people who are unsure of what they're "supposed" to do.

OP, I usually do my big shop online. If I need to go to the supermarket with the car seat I just put the seat directly into a normal trolley and pile the shopping around the baby and on the fold down trolley seat. Like this

I used to just take the car seat to the front of the store where all the specialist trolleys are - they're not heavy at that age

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/06/2017 17:53

I do online shop once a week and got a mummy clip (big carabiner clip) on the pram to hang the basket/shopping bags onto. I've also just stuck the car seat into the trolley if they didn't have the ones for the car seat to attach onto. I've never cared if I looked weird.

MoominFlaps · 13/06/2017 17:55

Online shopping?

Genuine curiosity - why do people not do this? I did it even before I had DS. We do top ups together obviously but I can't for the life of me fancy doing a big shop with him (though I would happily do one alone Grin)

Catsick36 · 13/06/2017 17:58

I park, walk to trolley with toddler carrying 6 week old. Put baby in baby seat trolley (on a blanket or muslin cos I am precious like that) heft toddler into seat next to baby. And do big shops online

Kokusai · 13/06/2017 17:58

I'd use online shopping and avoid all the angst.

Vanillaisboring666 · 13/06/2017 17:59

This is why I loved my sling

AtHomeDadGlos · 13/06/2017 18:02

They'd be alright to wait in the car while you got a trolley.

Sunnywithadashofgin · 13/06/2017 18:03

I just put the baby in the trolley in the carseat!

apostropheuse · 13/06/2017 18:05

Online shopping, leave baby with father and go shopping on your own or send father to the supermarket and you stay at home mumsnetting. You decide!

purplerain85 · 13/06/2017 18:11

I'm glad someone else asked this as no matter what I do I always feel other parents are thinking I wouldn't do that :-) for me I mainly shop online and I find this works best for me. Sometimes if I need to do a top up shop I wear my baby carrier but that gets awkward when I bend down to get something. Having a basket hung off the pushchair helps too or putting car seat in a flat bed trolley. I find people are generally very helpful when they see you with a baby to pull a trolley out for you or help you load the shopping onto the belt

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 13/06/2017 18:25

Definitely online shopping. I live in the middle of a city and have no car, so I've been getting my weekly shopping delivered since long before I had my daughter. It amazes me how many of my new mum friends who do have cars faff about taking their babies to the supermarket. I don't see why you'd bother.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/06/2017 18:29

I took DD round the shop when she was 10 days old. We got out of hospital the day before and I was getting keen to go out. I just took her wrapped in a blanket over my shoulder, and the basket in my other arm, as she'd gone to sleep and I didn't want to risk waking her by faffing with the sling. She was perfectly happy.

I now feel like a slack mum for not worrying more.

Usually, we go with a sling, though. I didn't know there were trollies that you could put a car seat on.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/06/2017 18:31

But, sorry, I meant to say ... surely whatever option you choose, you can always put the baby over your shoulder for a few minutes while you dither between the car and the trollies or whatever?

Firenight · 13/06/2017 18:31

I just carried mine in a sling until they weren't big enough to sit in a trolley seat. I suspect you are over thinking this!

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 18:32

Nooo LRD you shouldnt have worried. I've had my DD out and about since day 2 after birth, i dont worry about the shopping thing i just couldnt figure out the logistics of the trolley thing haha. You are right not to worry i am a constant anti-precious mum making sure i dont over think things and reminding myself that i turned out fine without all of todays precious mum rules! The trolley thing was just confusing me though!

Thanks!

I will admit I get nervous because sometimes I worry I've done something utterly stupid without realising. You know?

I guess none of us can do right for doing wrong. Hmm Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/06/2017 18:55

I'm definitely seeking out the car-seat trollies, too.

2014newme · 13/06/2017 18:56

Sling
Or shop online
I had twins so shopping online was best for me

NennyNooNoo · 13/06/2017 19:15

I prefer to shop in a shop rather than online, Moomin. I think it's partly to do with getting out of the house, rather than sitting in front of a screen for the equivalent period of time. I actually quite enjoy shopping, although it is more trying when you have a small child. I don't plan menus in advance, rather I go and see what's on offer / takes my fancy and then plan the menu as I'm going along.

beekeeper17 · 13/06/2017 19:23

Shop online and get it delivered, I only started a couple of months ago and seriously it is the best thing ever! Makes me more organised too as I think about exactly what we're going to eat all week as I don't want to do any top up shops during the week if possible.

If I do need to buy a few things in the supermarket I just put dd in the pram and pop my shopping in the bit at the bottom of the pram.
