Newborns and trolleys

Ok I don't get the etiquette here

Going to the supermarket on my own with my 6 week old DD. I can't leave her in the car to get a trolley -its that debate isn't it? Bit like if you should leave a baby in the car when you go and pay for petrol, anyway I digress...

I also can't carry her over to the trolleys in her car seat in case they don't have one of those trolleys that the car seat fits on to. And if they do have one can i wrestle it out of a group of trolleys whilst holding her in the car seat (she is not a light 6 week old! I love her chunky baby rolls though)

So can I put her car seat into a normal trolley? Do i go and get one of those trolleys with the built in baby seat and then take her out of her car seat and put her in it? I have a big pushchair so usually put a basket in the basket underneath my pushchair and use that. But today i need to do a big shop and it got me thinking about trolleys. Maybe i should just shop online????? I wish supermarkets would have a collection of baby suitable trolleys parked next to the parent and child parking spaces. Advice/piss taking greatly received.

Dd was a hot baby too, but still loved the sling so worth a try. I used to carry her in the sling and pop her in to one of those lie down trolleys if needed.

CotswoldStrife · 13/06/2017 13:40

Just carry the baby in the car seat to the trollies. You are way overthinking this.

Battyboo82 · 13/06/2017 13:41

I used to use a Baby Bjorn, problem solved.

MiniMummy576 · 13/06/2017 13:44

Grin Angelica I'd never be able to get him out again! Heavy baby + short mummy = embarrassment in the car park Grin

DarylDixonsJockstrap · 13/06/2017 13:46

Sheesh! I never realised how much some over think things! Either that or I'm a useless heathen who should probably consider 'etiquette' more often.

Notyetthere · 13/06/2017 13:46

Online shop. Everytime. It is so convenient. I'm pregnant at the moment and the Tesco delivery men/women all carry the shopping into the kitchen and put the big heavy water/lemonade bottles away for me. Th rest they empty onto kitchen surfaces and I put it all away in my own time. All while I'm still in my pyjamas! I can't fault the service.

DarylDixonsJockstrap · 13/06/2017 13:46

But in answer to your post OP...why not just put the car seat on the floor whilst you get a trolley out of the rack?

PotteringAlong · 13/06/2017 13:49

This isn't even a problem.

Leave Dd in the car. Go and get a trolley.

If you don't want to do that, take Dd out of the car seat, carry her to the trolley and put her in it.

You're overthinking something which really is that simple.

MrsNuckyThompson · 13/06/2017 13:50

I leave DD in car while I fetch a trolley provided I've been able to park nearby.

Otherwise I take her in car seat and if no suitable trolley I put the whole seat into the biggest type of trolley which usually still gives me enough room for the shop!

superfluffyanimal · 13/06/2017 13:52

Big shop; I carried DD to trolleys in car seat, if there wasn't a suitable trolley I got a large one and put entire car seat into trolley with baby still in position, put shopping around her.

Small shop; Pram and basket .

SisterMortificado · 13/06/2017 13:52

Take baby, put in lie-down baby seat (maybe blanket underneath), clip baby in, off you go. If baby cries, it's a pest, but I perfected going between naps and feeds so it was mostly minimised.

(I'm all clucky now, I used to go on pension day and all the old people would come and coo over DD)

Spudlet · 13/06/2017 13:54

Don't worry, nobody will look at you op. It's easy to think they will when you feel uncertain yourself (as you're bound to when your baby is so little and it's all so new) but seriously, nobody will be bothered and nobody will bother you.

It will be fine, honest!

YoureNotASausage · 13/06/2017 13:54

Grab nearest trolley if not too far from car and put maxi cosi in it. Or if no trolley bay in sight, put maxi cosi over arm and go find one together. Then seat in the trolley, food piled up on babyGrin

talksensetome · 13/06/2017 13:57

Surely you just take the baby out of the carseat and carry her over to the trolleys and put her in one with a babyseat? Seems simple to me.

I tend to stick with online shopping now that mine walk and talk and ask for things.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/06/2017 14:05

It's been forever (30 years) since I've had a baby but my options were, in order;

1-Leave DC with my mum or sister
2-Front carrier
3-Put carseat in trolley (they didn't have the fancy baby-ready trollies back in my day) and pile the food around them.

I would never have left either DC in the car whilst getting a trolley. I either put them in the front carrier or carried the car seat in. The carseat wasn't that heavy, but maybe they're made of heavier materials now.

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 13/06/2017 14:05

Park near trollies and leave baby in car whilst you get one.

Take baby out of car seat and carry her to trollies and put her in one. You're really over thinking this.

DoveBlue · 13/06/2017 14:09

I leave babies in the car. Go find a double baby trolley or if not one nearby ask the trolley attendant to find me one and bring it to my car. I don't see the problem leaving them in the car for 30sec to a min to find a trolley.

Twinkie1 · 13/06/2017 14:10

Really! Just sit the car seat on the floor whilst you pull the trolley out of the trolley park thing.

user1471443504 · 13/06/2017 14:22

My carseat was a silvercross one and it used to clip onto the pram base bars. It also handily clipped onto a normal trolley on the toddler seat part.

Nelly5678 · 13/06/2017 14:31

Get a sling, put baby in the sling then you can use a normal trolley. Simple solution to a simple problem :)

hopsalong · 13/06/2017 14:38

I think this is difficult to do if you aren't willing to wear a sling and dead simple if you are. Don't worry that she will overheat. Just dress her sensibly. Supermarkets are never that hot, anyway.

Otherwise get her out of the car into the pram and do your shopping with a basket over your arm. If you need to get more than a basket's worth, order online.

Groupie123 · 13/06/2017 14:49

Sigh. You sound obtuse OP. Or without a shred of commonsense.

All you do is take the carseat and plonk it in the trolley, do your shopping, job done. Grab a biscuit on your way out.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 13/06/2017 14:52

Although yeah, of course you can put a car seat in to a big trolley. It's not great safety wise but no one would judge you for it.

But why is it unsafe? Unless you are short and unable to reach as minimummy describes I can't see the problem.

FanaticalFox · 13/06/2017 14:56

Really Groupie? I have plenty of common sense which is why I've thought of all the ways I COULD do it but there are limitations. Its a simple everyday problem but doesn't mean its not something that can't be discussed. I imagine you're one of those "know it all" parents who has never had a doubt or a second thought in their life. Everyone else thanks for helpful responses! Love a bit of pisstaking for my first world problem but to say I have no common sense? YABU.

It's surely safer to put a car seat into a big deep trolley than it is to put a car seat into one of the smaller shallower trolleys?

I'd have thought the whole trolley / car seat combination would be more stable and less likely to tip over if the car seat was in the bottom of a big trolley?
