watching Question Time, feeling pissed off and depressed. Finding Baroness Chakrabarti utterly awful, and Oakshott, who I know I SHOULD dislike, great.

What was the point of the programme?

Brokenbiscuit · 10/06/2017 10:36

What on earth did you like about her, OP? Genuine question!

I don't like either of them tbh, but I thought IO came across particularly badly last night. Campbell did well. Chris Grayling makes me feel quite stabby...

Fans of "In The Thick Of It", did any of you find it hilarious that Campbell was in the same room as Armando? I wonder how they react to each other- I'd love to be a fly on the wall.

We did! We wanted to see what they were like in the green room together.

As for Isabore Oakeshit, I was willing Shami Chakrabarti to get up, grab her by the hair extensions and bitchslap her. IO is rude, obnoxious and ignorant. She made Campbell look civilised by comparison.

I thought Campbell showed he kinda loved the increased fame that ITTOT brought him. Almost a smirk towards Armando.

I couldn't disagree more, OP. I'd never seen or heard of Isabel Oakeshott before QT last night, but it was her I loathed, not SC.

IO is not my cup of tea but she reflects a certain not-Westminster-bubble-couldn't-give-a-shit view that Chakrabati etc will never get/deal with.

Interestingly, AC was able to engage with her on a much more human level ( whilst still making his point).

Oakshott seemed brutally honest, which I suppose a lot of people dont like but I find it refreshing compared to politicians. Chakrabarti, I dont know, there is something creepy about her, maybe patronizing?

Rude, nasty, vile and bullying.

lucydogz · 10/06/2017 12:52

fair enough - but didn't it grate with anyone that, asked a question about anti-semitism, Chakrabarti said she was bored with the subject and refused to answer? I think if you're on QT you should show some level of respect to the audience.

Chakrabarti as ever was appalling

I didn't watch Question Time but I really do not like Chakrabati - I find her a total hypocrite, arrogant, condescending and rude . I do usually like Oakshott and IMO she normally puts her points across in a calm, measured manner. I can't comment on QT as I didn't see it - might try and watch it on catch-up

I don't think I agree OP, but I enjoyed QT more than I have in a long time. I thought the panel was great and worked together brilliantly in terms of entertainment. Lots of candour from Isabel O, Alastair C and Armando I. Achingly liberal Shami C doing her usual thing (and getting caught out by that oh so tiresome anti-semetism question from the audience). Insipid Chris G in the line of fire and dealing with it pretty graciously. Dimbleby even more irascible than usual after a long night doing the election. I was hooked.

Chakrabarti said she was bored with the subject and refused to answer?

That's a complete lie. She didn't say she was bored with the subject and she gave quite a detailed answer despite starting off by saying she had said everything she had to say on the matter.

She said there had been problems with racism and anti semitism in the Labour Party, as there have in other parties. She said she had made recommendations about the way people treat each other and hoped they would be followed.

She didn't attribute the outcome of the election to people's perception of anti-semitism within the party but said the woman in the audience who thought it did was entitled to her view.

I happen to think there is anti-semitism among some Labour Party members and others on the Left. It comes from people who can't or won't separate simply being Jewish with legitimate criticism of Israeli politics and their disapproval of the support of the US for Israel.

I think Corbyn was lying when he said he'd never heard of such a thing. I have and he's been to a lot more Labour meetings than me. I also think that he behaved astonishing badly at the launch of Chakrabarti's findings where Ruth Smeeth was insulted.

But none of that means that you can misrepresent what Chakrabarti said on QT

IO is nothing like Katie Hopkins generally, a much nicer, milder and more intelligent considered person than her.

Didn't catch QT as had to do other things but if IO was at all like KH I would expect she was more having a bad day than anything else.

Yes, I think Diddums was having a bad day. Doesn't excuse her though.

Chakrabarti said she was bored with the subject and refused to answer

How many times does the Labour party have to explain something?

I bet that the next election will still go on about 'terrorist' sympathisers and Trident.

Report
limitedperiodonly · 10/06/2017 15:31

She didn' t do that Orlantina . OP is imagining it. But yes, I agree. Her answer was more in the spirit of 'there's nothing more that I can say to convince you if you refuse to be convinced''.

She's a bit too dull and earnest for my liking but she wasn't disrespectful to the audience. Now, Oakeshott on the other hand... She flounced and rolled her eyes and was sarcastic without being witty. Her level of debate was poor - at one point when talking about the hung parliament she said: 'it is what it is' - searing political insight. It was like watching a teenager. Now that is disrespectful.

Campbell and Iannucci were good. Grayling was a complete waste of space who must really be in Theresa's bad books to have had to appear.

^ completely untrue!

What with that and the fact you thought Oakshot was "great", I need to ask a question - did you actually watch the programme?Hmm

Report
IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 10/06/2017 15:47

And yes, Grayling came across as completely ineffectual. I expect him and TM get along very well.

Report
nauticant · 10/06/2017 16:52

Sour and sulky is never a good look, especially if you've put yourself forward so prominently on telly.

It was like watching a teenager is dead right.

Report
StatisticallyChallenged · 10/06/2017 20:02

Very much like watching a sulky teenager with all the conviction of how right they are and how everyone who disagrees is just stupid! Right down to the eye rolling sarcasm.

I don't get the hate for SC. She is quite earnest and 'straight', but I don't get the perception of her as jumped up at all, especially compared to many other politicians.

I had never seen nor heard of Isabel oakshott- my initial reaction was what a cold and sulky person- then I thought 'give her time'.

She got worse.

In terms of the programme I thought Shami Chakrabati came across better. However, her part in the whitewash over anti-semitism by too many Labour party members is something I still remember.

I agree.

She's definitely the sort of female I would jump into fast moving traffic to avoid exchanging pleasantries with.
