Why doesn't Corbyn understand that he lost?

I'm totally bemused! He thinks it's an absolutely 'incredible' result and that May should resign. Has no one told him that more people voted for her and the tories have more MPs? The tories ran an appalling campaign, trying to sell hugely unpopular policies, May comes across dreadfully (all twitchy and brittle) yet still more people voted for her - even with all the bribes he was offering. A decent candidate could have won it for labour, (Yvette cooper?) I know there's been a big swing, but still! Not winning against a poor opponent who's run a dreadful campaign is hardly a cause for celebration.

And we are not going to have to wait until 2012.

No chance of this 'coalition of chaos' limping in for five years.

CivQueen · 09/06/2017 15:50

2022, obviously, I don't have a time machine yet Grin

iismum · 09/06/2017 15:51

I know by 2022, a lot of the selfish older generation will probably have died who vote conservatives and a lot of their safe votes will be wiped out

This has been predicted for decades but never seems to happen. Sadly, it seems that as people age, many of them move from wanting to change the world to wanting to have a comfortable retirement (though I doubt many of them will have a comfortable retirement without a functional NHS).

Imbeingunreasonable · 09/06/2017 15:52

THIS - She wanted to increase her power so she couldn't be overturned by rebel back benchers.

Hopefully the moderate conservatives will also put the brakes on her plans

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 09/06/2017 15:52

YABU to start yet another thread about Corbyn and YABU to post it here instead of in the politics section of MN! Hmm

bojorojo · 09/06/2017 15:53

When I mentioned freebe policies, I was thinking of £0 tuition fees. These are clearly a big freebe to new students, that is the point isnt it? No, I am not stupid, but I do understand economics and what is free!(To the recipient of course - not the tax payer!)

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 15:54

I strongly disagree that someone like Yvette Cooper would have won the election.

I like her, but Labour is winning ground amongst young people who respect and identify with Corbyn's apparently radical left views (although as I have said repeatedly, I really don't understand how they are radical - they just seem standard Left to me).

I freely admit I am a Corbyn fan but I have done my research - I have read his policies, I have read his background (not just the press spin on it), and I still support him. There seems to be this weird thinking on the right that Corbyn supporters are wildly idealistic right on hippy types who want unicorns and magic and I'm not at all. I don't, for one thing, agree that scrapping tuition fees should be a priority right now.

I have seen absolutely nothing whatsoever to suggest Corbyn wouldn't make a highly competent PM. May, on the other hand....I mean honestly, surely the Tories amongst you can see how untenable her position is now?

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 15:56

It wasn't Corbyn playing a blinder, it was young people who couldn't be bothered to vote in the referendum suddenly waking up and voting for the teeny (to young people) party so they can put their Labour tag on social media and feel all, like, political. That and the sweeteners such as promises that are appealing (whether they'd ever happen or stack up is a different matter). Meanwhile the urgent issue of Brexit deal has been placed into jeopardy ans our infighting has been placed on a global platform for all to see. Yeah, great position, that. Oh and I'm sure they really wanted a Tory/dup coalition as a result? No? OOPS. Never mind, at least they graced the polling stations eh.

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 15:56

*trendy

Killdora · 09/06/2017 15:57

I strongly disagree that someone like Yvette Cooper would have won the election

Absolutely.

Corbyn won over the youth and the disaffected voters.

Not only that, he and his party's 'loony left' manifesto galvanised them to get out and vote!

It's pure folly to think a standard copy/paste labour polotigian could have done the same.

Leanback · 09/06/2017 15:58

Current students wouldn't be eligible for scrapping tuition fees. The people who would be eligible aren't old enough to vote yet.

Tuition fees was not a key issue in this election.

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 15:59

Moomin - you have seen absolutely nothing whatsoever to suggest JC would make a highly competent PM?

There's an opticians in most high streets.

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 15:59

^ Wouldn't

PumpkinPiloter · 09/06/2017 16:00

Theresa May said herself and I quote "If I lose more than 6 seats, I have lost this election".

She went further and posted this through a million peoples door.

So by her own admission she lost. Or she was being dishonest about what constituted a victory in order to motivate her supporters.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 16:00

Dolls

Would you like to enlighten me? Assume it's the usual terrorist sympathiser guff?

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 16:01

Leanback - you really think the majority of yoof joined the dots on the tuition fees issue?

No. It's a trendy, young matter, so it's a tick in the box from them. Simple as.

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 16:01

Moomin. Sigh.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 16:02

Lol ok Dolls. Not patronising at all.

I'm young. I did note vote Labour because of Brexit, nor because of tuition fees.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 16:02

So you're not actually going to answer my question then?

Leanback · 09/06/2017 16:03

*dolls well I am a youth and could work that out as did the people I know.

But keep Patronising us and see how it works out in the next election Wink

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 16:03

Civqueen - I really wouldn't be too sure about that. Buckle up for 5 years.

CivQueen · 09/06/2017 16:04

Hmmm we were quite trendy and young in my day.

Hardly any fucker voted though.

Best hope the Torys don't take your attitude towards the youth vote, it won't help in next months election Grin

TheWitchAndTrevor · 09/06/2017 16:04

If you don't understand why Jeremy Corbyn
Is being all chipper and happy.

Then you don't understand politics.

I would say the same if were a conservative in the same position.

bojorojo · 09/06/2017 16:04

If you have give away policies and shout loudly that the "rich" will pay, you tend to get student votes. It is just the way it is but Corbyn mobilised them like some old uncle. They are young and don't remember the unions and the strikes. The 80% tax and mortgaes at 15%. Those were the days !!!

Students don't pay tax, they don't have jobs, they do not have dependent families, they do not have mortgages or even pay much rent, they don't have responsibilities. They go home to mum and dad after voting for a bit of r and r. They want it all. They just are not paying for it - yet! You just wait!!!

DollsHouseTales · 09/06/2017 16:04

No Moomin I'm not. If you can't see it, enjoy your peace of mind. I don't have to explain it to you.
