Why doesn't Corbyn understand that he lost?

I'm totally bemused! He thinks it's an absolutely 'incredible' result and that May should resign. Has no one told him that more people voted for her and the tories have more MPs? The tories ran an appalling campaign, trying to sell hugely unpopular policies, May comes across dreadfully (all twitchy and brittle) yet still more people voted for her - even with all the bribes he was offering. A decent candidate could have won it for labour, (Yvette cooper?) I know there's been a big swing, but still! Not winning against a poor opponent who's run a dreadful campaign is hardly a cause for celebration.

Erm... TM is still the Prime minister, so guessing the Tories did kind of win? Think there are some over excited Labourites on here who are a tad confused.

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 21:57

Moomin Yes I would, so long as they were in agreement on getting straight on with Brexit negotiations and no second Scottish independence referendum for the term.

I'm relieved more than anything we have a government already in place with a mandate for Brexit and the top five cabinet positions including David Davis confirmed this close to the negotiations. I like many want stability and to move forward now. And no more elections for a few years!

MissShittyBennet · 09/06/2017 22:03

When you already had a majority, called an election to increase it and your main opponents got eviscerated in local elections during the campaign, if the phrase 'kind of win' has to be used... that's a pretty hard fail.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 22:03

No one won.

I'm just stating fact. Yes the Tories are still in government because they have a larger number of seats (largely all thanks to Ruth Davidson) but they did not win a majority - it was a hung parliament.

I know Labour lost the election, I'm not deluded. But the Tories didn't win. It's a minority government. Given that, she has no mandate for Brexit either.

MissShittyBennet · 09/06/2017 22:06

Yes, I wonder how long it'll take the EU negotiating team to throw May's six seats no Brexit mandate remark right back at whoever she sends.

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 22:07

The mandate for Brexit was given at the referendum last year and by both Tory and Labour voters at this Election.

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 22:09

The EU want to get on with it too now. More protracted wrangling won't benefit anyone.

Charmageddon · 09/06/2017 22:13

Indeed Cuppa, in fact, it would appear that 82.3% of the electorate are now in favour of Brexit, rather than 52% !!

BIWI · 09/06/2017 22:15

Post on Twitter last night shows why Corbyn 'won':

look at vote and not % & it is even more remarkable: Corbyn 2017 12.9m, Milliband 2015 9.3m, Brown 2010 8.6 Blair 2005 9.5m Blair 2001 10.7m

It was a huge loss for the Conservatives because they no longer have a majority, which makes them much weaker in government

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 22:18

Post on Twitter last night shows why Corbyn 'won'

Thing is May also got a biggest Tory vote share since 1979.

This election has been strange for many reasons.

ChasedByBees · 09/06/2017 22:19

A mandate for Brexit was absolutely not given by both Tory and Labour voters 😂

roundaboutthetown · 09/06/2017 22:20

Corbyn may not officially have "won" the election, but only an idiot would fail to understand why Corbyn is probably feeling like a winner, tonight, and Theresa May like a loser!! May lost her mandate and her reputation for strength and stability - now she needs propping up by her competitors. Corbyn lost his reputation as a loony who was single handedly responsible for the implosion of the Labour Party and won himself a reputation as a rousing speaker able to keep his cool and not descend to the immature mudslinging of his opponents (and even supposedly his own side), and able to go out and win votes. He has also proved that the policies put forward in the Labour manifesto are not too left wing for a large portion of the British public to stomach and proved that continued austerity and cuts are vote losers.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 22:26

Um no there is no mandate...

BIWI · 09/06/2017 22:28

Yes that's true, Piglet. We're seeing a return to two party politics

DogStrummer · 09/06/2017 22:28

"she has no mandate for Brexit either."

She absolutely does. The referendum gave her that. If that wasn't enough, both main parties supported Article 50, and Labour stood in the election on a ticket of delivering Brexit.

BIWI · 09/06/2017 22:29

... plus a higher turn out as well, so number of votes overall is higher

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 22:30

ChasedByBees Yes it it has been. Labour policy supports Brexit including the end of FOM. A number of Labour MPs in predominantly pro Leave areas campaigned on that and won their seats.

Those suggesting Corbyn could just put the brakes on are living a fantasy.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 22:30

Forgive me - for a hard Brexit.

LottieandMia · 09/06/2017 22:34

I will admit that I was a traditional labour voter who felt that Corbyn would be even less popular than Miliband and I was wrong and I actually have a huge amount of respect for what he has accomplished against all the odds...ie taking a significant number of seats off the Tories, some of which were strongholds.

Natsku · 09/06/2017 22:35

Canterbury swung to Labour too which is a bloody miracle so definite win there.

roundaboutthetown · 09/06/2017 23:03

Yes - cathedral city, grammar school area, Tory heartland with over 150 unbroken years worth of Tories holding the seat... and Labour won it! Mind you, allowing its hospital to go to rack and ruin cannot have endeared anyone to their local MP of 30 years despite the City's reputation for being willing to vote for a donkey if the Tories put it up as a candidate.... Would love to hear if there are any more results as surprising as that one!

ChasedByBees · 09/06/2017 23:59

Cupoftea and charmogeddon - you're both claiming that if you have voted labour or Tory in this GE you support Brexit. Absolutely not true. The pressure group to move away from hard Brexit recommended tactical voting to elect members of any party that might be opposed to hard Brexit.

bestforbritain.org/

I know many remainers who have voted labour to change the course of Brexit. There would have been no point voting for a minority party with no hope of getting in if it led to TM's landslide.

Ravenblack · 10/06/2017 00:02

Agree with the OP.

Fab39ish · 10/06/2017 06:47

Amber Rudd needed a recount and Richmond was close too. Yes they got the highest number of seats and 42.4% of the vote against Labour at 40% but is is nothing like the predicted landslide St the start of the Election. Yes TM ran a shoddy campaign but this TUrn is Aldo largely down to JC.
It's funny how all the predicted vitriol from the left hasn't materialized. Instead we have thread after thread attacking JC.
