This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

I'm delighted with the best outcome that could be expected. How TM thinks she can remain in a coalition with the DUP is beyond understanding. They are to the right of Gengis Khan and anti-abortion choice, anti gay marriage/equality etc and include terrorists also, very relevantly want a hard Brexit -- maybe to make sure a strong border is maintained between NI and Eire.
They are saying on Radio 4 that a change in leadership is expected in the summer I suppose they mean while Parliament is in recess. Not very judgment on the part of the Tories Cameron thought he had the remain vote in his pocket in an unnecessary referendum and May thought she'd get a landslide in an unnecessary election.
Heavens knows what the Scots who voted Conservative thought they'd get out of the election

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 13:49

She can holiday in Europe in about 9 days time?

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 13:50

Benedikte I was under the impression they wanted a soft Brexit so as to avoid a hard border?

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 13:50

Yes she can stay at Junkers....I hear he is getting a place ready for her. Such fun!

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 13:51

"She didn't really own it to be fair, she didn't mention the awful loss of seats, she glossed over it and spoke about how she' continue Brexit and her terrorism management plans and how she's always been right with the DUP.
She's just acting like all is rosy. She's deluded."

She's not deluded, she's speaking out in a positive way to say despite the result, she's going to get on with the job of Brexit etc. That isn't acting like it's all rosy, it's pulling your socks up and saying right lets get on with this. I'm glad she hasn't cowered away like Camoron did by resigning when things looked tough. It takes some guts to come out knowing you've fucked up and say you're going to get on with things...

Alfieisnoisy · 09/06/2017 13:52

An alliance with the DUP. I do hope the Sun and the Mail will be featuring this clearly. They are doing a deal with ex terrorists...oh the fucking irony of that.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 13:52

I'm glad she hasn't resigned either. Although I imagine she'd love to pass the Brexit buck that no-one wants, it has to stop somewhere. And it's getting silly everyone washing their hands of it.

indigox · 09/06/2017 13:52

Benedikte You clearly know nothing about Scottish politics, and as for DUP, they don't want a hard border.

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 13:53

You mean for the stability of the Conservative party.

No the country. Corbyn didn't get the number of seats. Even with the Lib Dems, SNP and Green in coalition (and how stable would that be, I'd give it months max) they would still be less in number than the Tories overall.

I'm not a Conservative, have always voted Labour or Lib Dem up to now. Voted Tory this time for Brexit after voting Leave last year. It needs to be swift. If Corbyn leaves and Labour come up with a more realistic manifesto I might then vote for them again.

Alfieisnoisy · 09/06/2017 13:54

I want her to get on with things and not walk away like Cameron did.

Be clear though that knives perfect for back stabbing are being sharpened as we speak. It's just a matter of time until she is ousted.

Praying we don't then get Boris Johnson.

I also hope that Labour make it bloody difficult to get any further cuts to social care through. I am a volunteer and charities are picking up the pieces where they can. It's an utter disgrace though.

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 13:56

One good thing today is all the nasty comments/posts on Facebook by Labour voters have stopped and they have gone very quiet...

PumpkinPiloter · 09/06/2017 13:56

She said that if she lost only 6 seats this would mean she lost the election.

So by her own reckoning she has lost. If this is not arrogance it is manipulative lies to encourage people to vote conservative. I am not sure what is worse.

It is striking that Nicola Sturgeon owned the fact that this was a bad election for the SNP and seemed generally interested to find out why, offered a few suggestions but said she needed some sleep first. Whatever you think of her this was an honest real response in polar opposite to May's speech

May's speech is just like her campaign she says nothing provides no plans and just wants to carry on as before. Well I am sorry Theresa you took a gamble and lost and now you need to admit it and come up with a plan.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 13:57

Yes Tears they are in RL celebrating.

But that there Facebook certainly worked to get the young involved didn't it?

Jng1 · 09/06/2017 13:58

I think Theresa May has done the right thing in the circumstances. Resigning and forcing a leadership election at this point in time would cause unnecessary havoc so close to the beginning of the Brexit discussions.
As the BBC said, there may be a challenge to her over the summer recess.

I don't think she is deluded or acting like everything is rosy. She knows she has had a kicking, but at the end of the day she still has the ability and right and enough of a mandate to form a government with the DUP and that is what she has done.
It's classic Theresa May style. She's a no-nonsense, get on with the job person. It is her strength, and to some, her weakness.

She didn't get the majority that she hoped for, obviously, but the absolute numbers are not a disaster.
In 2010 Cameron formed the coalition with just 306 Conservative seats - 12 fewer than TM. And they then went on to that much bigger majority in 2015.

Actually I think good for her. Much easier to do a Cameron and bail out for an easier life.
In many ways she is perfectly demonstrating those British values and spirit she has always espoused - if you get knocked back you pick yourself up, brush yourself down and get back out there in the game...

Funny how when Corbyn was getting knocked down and came back, again and again, he was considered a hero, but when May does it she is 'out of touch' or 'deluded'.
Two sides of every coin.

Good for her, I say.

PumpkinPiloter · 09/06/2017 13:59

"One good thing today is all the nasty comments/posts on Facebook by Labour voters have stopped and they have gone very quiet."

Just a shame it has not stopped all the nasty conservative comments especially the ones denigrating the youth of this country. At least we will not have to hear all the JC has no chance comments anymore.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 13:59

But she hasn't done the job

She has destablised her party and her country. She has done this.

ShatnersWig · 09/06/2017 14:02

Cuppa said "If Corbyn leaves and Labour come up with a more realistic manifesto I might then vote for them again."

The one thing you can guarantee after this election is that JC is going nowhere. The man and that non-realistic manifesto just got them a 10% greater share of the vote than Milliband, 11% more than Brown, almost double Michael Foot's and beat one of Blair's victories by 5% and almost another of Blair's victories.

PumpkinPiloter · 09/06/2017 14:03

"Funny how when Corbyn was getting knocked down and came back, again and again, he was considered a hero, but when May does it she is 'out of touch' or 'deluded'.
Two sides of every coin."

Corbyn got back up again by winning the majority vote twice in leadership race. May got knocked down by losing a majority vote. Do you see the difference?

peachgreen · 09/06/2017 14:03

Nothing that involves the DUP can ever be good news. I really hope even Tory voters are appalled by the idea of sharing power with them.

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:04

Celebrating what? They didn't win the election nor did they get the majority of votes. Corbyn may as well resign because although they gained more seats then they had, he lost them the election, even with a bells and whistles manifesto claiming to hand out free lollipops to all! If another election is called either in the Autumn or in a couple of years, he's never going to win the Labour party an election unless he throws in an ice cream along with the free lollipop.

There's nothing for Labour to be celebrating because we still have a Tory government.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 09/06/2017 14:08

^ This. In spades.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 14:08

is PaulDacres back yet?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 09/06/2017 14:09

There's nothing for Labour to be celebrating because we still have a Tory government.

But you have to consider that the Torys were forecast to get a majority of 100 seats, just 4 weeks ago, "there's nothing for labour to celebrate" is just not true.

cdtaylornats · 09/06/2017 14:09

The situation most likely to leave us crashing out of the EU with no deal as we pass the deadline with various groupings voting against any deal.

Jng1 · 09/06/2017 14:09

No she hasn't. She's fought an election which, granted, didn't go as planned, but her party has still won the election and they are still in government, ready to continue with Brexit plans.
It's business as usual. Would have been much more destabilising to have a government change at this point with suddenly a new leader with no government experience.
The markets and currency haven't crashed.

Honestly, you guys are such scaremongerers!
"destablised her party and her country" Grin Grin Grin Grin

If anything, this current cloud might end up with a silver lining as she won't be able to force through a hard brexit now.
