This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

The DUP have strong and proven links with the UDA among other select groups who have been responsible for 1000s of murders on the island of Ireland. So now there will be terrorist supporters as part of the UK government. It's not good

Yes after the Tories smearing Corbyn for speaking to IRA.

theymademejoin · 09/06/2017 12:43

Sinn Féin have 7 seats and will not be taking them. None of the numbers seem to take this into account. May only needs 322 seats so she could join with the Plaid Cymru instead of the DUP.

annielouise · 09/06/2017 12:44

Have to laugh at all the Tories on here criticising one group of the electorate - the young - voting on a policy that affects them in terms of money as in university fees. As if Conservatives don't vote Conservative for monetary reasons, oh no.

Dandandandandandandan · 09/06/2017 12:48

But Annie - there is a bit of a difference between protesting about someone taking more money from what you've earned and protesting that you're not being given more money from what someone else has earned that you may well never pay back (how many people are net contributors? precious few, that's part of the fiscal problem!)

The same students voting for free fees today will be the ones voting against it in 10 years' time when it's their taxes on the line for an ever increasing number of pointless degrees from third rate universities.

I am all for more money being spent on education, but in the right way (I would be hauling in a giant cohort of headmasters and ofsted staff for advice!), which I think is at the bottom, not the top. Spend the money on primary and secondary, and let those who want degrees fund them and pay back when they start earning above a certain threshold. Just as they do now.

Yes, mindblowingly hypocritical.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 12:50

Christ alive the young did NOT just vote regarding tuition fees. They voted to take back control people

MrsLupo · 09/06/2017 12:54

Crikey, what a pompous overblown speech. Has she learned nothing?

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 12:56

Nope......she's an odd little person isn't she

thinkiamgoingcrazy · 09/06/2017 13:00

What did she say in her speech?

Birdsbeesandtrees · 09/06/2017 13:01

Nothing of note. Will get in with Brexit.

No comment on the agreement with the DUP.

annielouise · 09/06/2017 13:03

Dandan, I'm not talking about the ins and outs of uni fees even though I think the discrepancy between what the English pay to what the Welsh and Scots pay (nothing in the latter case) is unfair. I think perhaps there should be some fees and it could all be restructured. I'm not completely against that.

What I'm talking about with my comment is people on here criticising them for having the temerity to come out and vote for free uni fees as this was a sweetie offered by Corbyn (as said by someone upthread). If that's what they did, and I don't think it's the sole reason for them voting in larger numbers than before (I think Brexit was a shock and made them take stock and show more interest), how are they doing anything different than what Tories do in looking out for their own interests? They're not. Conservatives vote for what is in their interests so it's ironic Tories commenting on it.

If the young voting for their own interests is what has happened how is that any different to what goes on anyway.

annielouise · 09/06/2017 13:07

It's the implication that the young shouldn't have voted - unless it was the way you want - as they can't possibly understand all the issues. Well who does? We could argue those that voted to leave the EU didn't understand all the issues. We all vote for who we think represents us best, and if you've a conscience hopefully doesn't crucify other groups (which the Tories have done with the disabled for example).

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 13:10

I don't think dandandand can have any idea about just how many rights the young have had taken away from them in recent years to think that this is all about tuition fees (although that will play a part). What about the housing crisis - the prevalence of rich older landlords and the lack of housing benefit for instance?

But the old should keep their free tv licences...

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 13:12

I was listening to a Tory say the result had to do with winter fuel payments. PMSL.. .nope

Rinoachicken · 09/06/2017 13:14

Her speech was bizarre - like she's completely ignoring the electorate, in denial, just pretend it hasn't happened

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 13:15

"The other side didn't understand what they were voting for" as become a byword for it can't be bothered to work out why they disagreed with me.

We don't bring a country together unless we start understanding the reasons why we disagree.

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 13:15

Relieved we can get on with Brexit now. May's the right leader to see that through.

MrsLupo · 09/06/2017 13:15

For anyone under 35, it may be the first time they've seen a principles-driven politician in action, which is in itself a very powerful thing. Corbyn has been campaigning based on his personal principles for 40 years. He knows what he believes, and why, and doesn't deviate from it for the sake of spin or soundbites or cheap votes. Particularly intoxicating stuff for people who can't remember anything before Blair. Tuition fees are the least of it imo.

annielouise · 09/06/2017 13:16

A lot of my kids generation won't ever have housing security. What about pensions when they get to that age? If they only voted for free university who could really blame them? Most look out for their own interests, none more so than the Tories financially. I was just pointing out how ironic it was Tories criticising them for that when they do it themselves.

MrsLupo · 09/06/2017 13:17

Have you just got up, or something, cuppa? Hmm

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 13:17

I am inspired by Theresa May. If I don't get into my first choice university next year I will simply turn up announcing my marks have spoken and it is the will of the examiners. Now let's get to work.

Moussemoose · 09/06/2017 13:19

Dandand but lots of Tories don't just object to paying tax on money they have earned they object to paying tax on inherited wealth and wealth gained by house price increases.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 13:20

Does this mean bye bye late term abortion? Roll back on gay marriage? You can bet TM will be happy to give them some sops on "moral" issues which she doesn't give a stuff about....

Don't be ridiculous. The DUP aren't idiots. Their concern is avoiding a united Ireland not interfering with mainland social policy.

Moussemoose · 09/06/2017 13:21

NoLoveofMine my son sat one of his A levels this morning and I have just shared your "will of the examiners" comment. He to is inspired to follow suitGrin
