This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

So Tories have massively more seats than their share of the vote would indicate.

Although their figure of % share is very similar to that which Blair had which got him that big landslide. They haven't got that number of seats.

I don't know an awful lot about the DUP, but surely the tories couldn't be that stupid to go into coalition with them? That move could easily alienate a number of tory voters (esp those who aren't Catholic). They would have to be in very desperate measures to team up with DUP.

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 10:54

guess for those who want Brexit Farage should come back.

Hell no!!!! Last thing I wanted. Wanted to get Brexit done with so we can tackle the other issues.

Carolinesbeanies · 09/06/2017 10:54

TM had to pull an election. She had no mandate otherwise. TM has been the only PM I can remember in recent times, who put personal opinion to one side and vowed to represent the UK people. Anyone believing otherwise, has just missed one of the most dedicated public servants weve had in modern politics.

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 10:54

I wish I'd been able to vote, I was so excited I walked the long way home past the polling station and enjoyed watching all the canvassers getting their vote out when I saw them. Saw a fair few young people going to vote as well, and nearly everyone I spoke to was voting Labour, unsurprisingly.

ShatnersWig · 09/06/2017 10:55

People said the Tories were the nasty party. Dread to think what word they'd use for the DUP.

TopTrumps20 I'm not sure why you'd want the EU to do that, why would anyone want the worst for the country?

Rinoachicken · 09/06/2017 10:56

DUP aren't Catholic

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 10:56

The DUP should upset any Tory voters (or anyone) who care about women's rights, gay rights and so much more.

ShatnersWig · 09/06/2017 10:56

Caroline What planet are you on? She had NO need to call an election at all. She had three years to go, had a majority in the commons, had the backing of 52% of the referendum voters and a vast majority in the commons agreeing to trigger A50. She absolutely did NOT need to call an election. Just as Cameron did not need to call the referendum.

"The EU is going to piss all over us"
Very vulgar [green]

Wormulonian · 09/06/2017 10:58

hackmum not so great for a pregnant teen in NI who has no abortion rights or a same sex couple though. There will be no pressure coming from Westminster to help change the laws in NI to bring them finally into line with the rest of the UK - so much for being one country. The DUP influence will mean money for their pet projects and more gravy troughing no doubt for them and their business friends. More same old, same old sectarian "fleg" waving.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/06/2017 10:59

The EU is going to piss all over us Hopefully Grin

I see the raw sentiment behind this statement, but how is this going to be helpful for anyone?

Why is the "EU pissing all over us" beneficial or desirable to anyone? The vulnerable, the jobless, the young, the ordinary voter?

Oops, thanks for the correction draylon Blush (i've been up half the night with a sick child in my defence)

But my point still stands, the non religious and more liberal tory voters will really not like a coalition with a party that has staunch views on abortion, gay rights etc.

Wormulonian · 09/06/2017 11:00

Agree with a few others - the one ray of light is the upsurge in the youth vote!

NinonDeLenclos · 09/06/2017 11:01

The EU isn't going to piss on anyone, this is just tabloid bollocks.

The actual pissing has been May's government choosing the most foolish and destructive Brexit possible.

BringMeTea · 09/06/2017 11:01

I am so very happy for Corbyn. What an impressive campaign he ran in the face of shocking media hatchet jobs.

LadyinCement · 09/06/2017 11:01

Yes, I saw that "hopefully" comment and was Confused .

Do you want things to be bad for this country and its people, Toptrumps20 ?

BorrowLove · 09/06/2017 11:02

Hear hear Chardonnay.

There's too many Labour voters coming out of the woodwork today saying they voted purely to screw over TM, or screw up Europe negotiations and they appear to have very little idea about how bad this is for our entire population.

(Not about all Labour voters, purely about the ones who voted Labor for the above reasons without seeing the consequences and the fact this would impact the most vulnerable members of our society first)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/06/2017 11:03

agree! they can mitigate each others worse excesses

I voted labour but can see both parties have something to bring to table

I don't want either of them to resign , and have no malice to either leader

and soft slow Brexit, yay

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 11:04

Piglet and PerkyPolly I'm wondering if the vote percentage / seat percentage is actually one of the closest it's been for a while. It has always been horrendously mis-matched. I'll have to check and do some maths over the weekend!

Both main parties' vote share went up, but Labour's increase was almost twice that of Cons. BBC has a break down page www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/2017/results
