This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

Exactly. Esp if fuckface farage comes back as he has said he "has no choice" but to do Sad

PollyPerky · 09/06/2017 10:38

The Tory vote was actually up 6% in terms of actual number of votes. They have many more votes than Labour.

If you look at the map of the country most of it is blue.

The real trouble is that certain pockets- NW and NW- have more constituencies per head of population so they end up with more MPs which always goes against the Tories as those areas are traditionally Labour.

The boundaries for constituencies need re-aligning, which was a plan a few years ago.

Londonlovely · 09/06/2017 10:39

BorrowLove Please tell me how immigration affected areas such as Lincolnshire and Lancashire negatively rather than austerity?

And whilst at it, perhaps you could tell me how the NHS would cope without immigration. How our farmers would cope without immigration. even the most hardline Tories know that immigration is needed for the economy.

I like Corbyn and hope that May's hostile and stupendously xenophobic rhetoric will die down.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:39

Yep have bought a car but I didn't walk in and day just fucking give me what I want you tosser. It's all your fault and I'm not going to listen to you and if you don't sell it to me for a fiver I'm off.

Don't think that tact generally works. Remember the no deal is better than a bad deal?

Hillingdon · 09/06/2017 10:39

The young people voted for free tutition fees. By default they don't remember the 70's. The 70's had 5% of people going to university. Now it is 50%. Great news (not!) that we were close to having to pay for students to undertake mickey mouse degrees.

None of this is ideal and a hung parliament is not good for any of us even if we had another election I think we might well get a similar result.

I see Nigel Farage coming back.

Alfieisnoisy · 09/06/2017 10:39

Labour did indeed lose but a clear message has been sent to the Govt. People are upset and angry about cuts to vital services.
When you care for disabled people and see support services disappearing while the rich are getting richer and avoiding as much tax as possible it does rather stick in the throat.
That's the message they need to take from this. Start treating vulnerable people with some basic humanity and things will change.

"Anyone who thinks a hung parliament is good for the nation doesn't understand politics and anyone who thinks a hung parliament is going to be good for a soft brexit doesn't understand negotiations or politics

If you want to see the city's opinion on this, look at what has happened to the pound (down over 2%) and the FTSE 250 (not 100)

Even the BBC have said this is going to make the brexit negotiations 'fiendishly harder' because of the hugely weakened position

No one benefits from years of hamstrung government, let alone when the country is facing the myriad of issues that we are supposed to be dealing with at the moment"

Absolutely this.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:40

Are we the same idiots that where told this is democracy and shut up. How charming

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:41

Well want to look at our economy since the brexit vote? PMSL quoting 2% down

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 10:42

I know the temptation to say, 'suck it up', 'get over it' etc, is very strong.

Fortunately, we have better manners than that.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 10:42

I see Nigel Farage coming back.

Well as Nuttall has just quit I fear you are right Hmm

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 10:43

Idiots who are saying what a wonderful night are the same horrendous individuals who are ashamed to call themselves British.

Sorry? Could you...elaborate here?

aquashiv · 09/06/2017 10:43

Over the moon here. More so that young people voted who clearly aren't as invested in believing the right wing press.
Dianne Abbott needs to stand down now.

PerkingFaintly · 09/06/2017 10:43

Still not making much sense, Lyin.

Of course there are worse countries in the world.

I want the best for my country, so I'm not going to take the worst countries as the benchmark or claim we must be fine if we're better than them.Hmm I'd rather always be looking for the best way to do things - sometimes we'll think we've got things reasonably right, other times we can pick up good practice from elsewhere.

I don't see this is even remotely controversial.

I find it bizarre how often I see people saying "You can't complain about X because we're not as bad as North Korea. And if you don't like it you can fuck off there."

Er, well actually I can complain about X because I want my country to be better than that, cheers all the same.

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 10:45

I'm neither ashamed nor proud to call myself British. It's just accident of birth. I love the country though.

I'm pleased the Labour vote has gone up so much and at the gains Labour have made, though my initial elation has been tempered by thoughts of a Tory/DUP coalition or agreement. Could be very worrying for abortion rights, gay rights and so much else given how much of the Conservative Party would agree with the DUP on them too. On the other hand, it could temper Brexit.

haveacupoftea · 09/06/2017 10:46

The Tories will form a coalition with the DUP. NI has been thrown into political instability since 2016 because Arlene Foster was implicated in the RHI scandal and refuses to step aside. Seems like a great match for TM who is also refusing to do what's right and step aside tbh.

Fuck sake Sad

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 10:46

2010 coalition was similar in terms of numbers of seats between cons and lib dems

No. Lib Dems contributed 57 seats. Dup will contribute 10

hackmum · 09/06/2017 10:48

PollyPerky: "The real trouble is that certain pockets- NW and NW- have more constituencies per head of population so they end up with more MPs which always goes against the Tories as those areas are traditionally Labour."

Not at all. As I mentioned earlier - perhaps you missed it? - Labour had 40% of the vote, Tories 42.4%. So Tories have massively more seats than their share of the vote would indicate.

And, at the risk of sounding like Father Ted explaining to Dougal "These are small, those are far away", the reason that there are smaller pockets of red is that they are mostly in cities, which are more densely populated.

ShoesHaveSouls · 09/06/2017 10:48

I can't stop smiling. I'm so proud of our young people for coming out and voting, for not swallowing the bile of the RW press, for not giving TM a mandate for a hard brexit or further austerity. Gives me great hope for the future.

Hillingdon · 09/06/2017 10:49

I guess for those who want Brexit Farage should come back.

For those who want a second vote on Brexit he should stay in the background!

KoolKoala07 · 09/06/2017 10:49

Oh come on! Whatever the outcome would have been, I can't see us being dragged out of this hole we are stuck in anytime soon. I'll probably have been six feet under 100s of years before we see major improvement to this country. Same shit different day!

Zipzapzop · 09/06/2017 10:49

Can't understand how people can be happy with this result.

Corbyn didn't win

Now a minority gov is possible - the EU is going to piss all over us

Worst possible result

hackmum · 09/06/2017 10:50

By the way, I really wouldn't worry about the DUP's hardline views on abortion and gay rights. There are enough socially liberal Tory backbenchers to put a block on an any attack on abortion or gay rights. Don't forget, there are only 10 DUP MPs. Their influence will be limited.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:51

EU was going to piss on us anyway. Now we have a chance it might be just a small riddle rather than a gushing waterfall
