This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

"There is far far worse out there in the world than us"

Whenever you find yourself comparing to the worst in the world to feel better, rather than the best in the world, you know you've gone wrong somewhere.

My seat in 2015: 274 Labour majority

Cue bombardment of leaflets, doorstepping, visits to the constituency from May, Johnson, Rudd, Hammond and countless Tory activists.

My seat now: 13,800 Labour majority

Kentnurse2015 · 09/06/2017 10:02

I think it's pretty much the worst result

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 10:02

On another note, though this may have been covered, the prospect of a Tory coalition or any kind of agreement with the DUP is horrifying for so many reasons.

Kentnurse2015 · 09/06/2017 10:05

That is why I think it's awful NoloveofMine

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 10:07

It looks like some sort of deal has been done.

Laura Kurrensburg has just said that sources are saying that some sort of deal with DUP is on the cards and it looks like she will be going to the Queen at some point today.

The80sweregreat · 09/06/2017 10:08

So a coalition of DUP and conservatives. Maybe.
How do we feel about that? I dont know anything about Irish politics at all. Would they have to go together to the EU for Brexit talks?
Could May continue.?

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 10:08

As I understand it a soft Brexit was one in which allowed us intellectual freedom of movement, free trade and farming subsidiaries but allowed us to limit immigration.

EU had already said no to this when David Cameron went begging prior to the the referendum.

Hard Brexit said we are out. Well try and sort out as mutually beneficial deal as we currently can. But we mean it out is most important we're going so you have to negotiate with us.

Now soft Brexit means we will go cap in hand to the EU with a trade deal being the most important factor. Because anything without it won't get through a hung parliament. We will have to make costly concessions. London will be happy

However the people who have suffered under immigration havent got enough that they can afford to compromise so will follow any party who offers an alternative no matter how extreme.

We are heading for some of the more extreme politics than we have seen in decades

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 10:08

I don't think it will be a coalition but an agreement instead.

user1480459555 · 09/06/2017 10:09

Draylon, May should NEVER have called an election. Unless she is a total idiot it was pretty obvious that a lot of leave voters are NOT and probably never will be tory voters.

Yes I want to leave the EU. I wanted to last June and I want to today but I have never voted tory and doubt I ever will.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the youngsters who hung this parliament. You know all those who couldn't get out of bed or put down their ipads and phones to actually go and make a vote on their future of THEIR county. Then when they didn't like the outcome of the vote they suddenly decide to use their right to vote.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 10:09

I agree Draylon.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/06/2017 10:10

Oh God the DUP....

Does this mean bye bye late term abortion? Roll back on gay marriage? You can bet TM will be happy to give them some sops on "moral" issues which she doesn't give a stuff about....

VIPissArtist · 09/06/2017 10:12

Well Hello Ukip again. Hello long torturous road back round to hard Brexit. Wine

The80sweregreat · 09/06/2017 10:12

A 'loose' arrangement with the DUP.
So much for strong and stable tory majority.

TheProLifeBergensAreComing · 09/06/2017 10:14

Prolifers will always try to attack abortion rights that's what they do. So I do feel scared at the prospect of a DUP coalition.

Nadine Dorries tried (and failed) to reduce the abortion time limit under a Labour govt (the very same Labour govt who did not extend abortion rights to NI when they had a massive majority.. ). I thought after that, that getting that hearing and having their day in parliament really emboldened the anti choice brigade and multiple other shitty attempts followed after that led on by Daily Mail and the Torygraph. Like around sex selection and sexism-or disability rights- and restricting abortion.

And probably no coincidence that pro life picketing of clinics and political lobbying really stepped up a gear after that.

I do think having enough prolifers in elected office and with actual new political power because the Tories need them, could give the anti choicers the ability to shift the window in the public debate because they will get an unprecedented media platform and they will hold all the horse trading cards with the Tories.

Cameron was an utter utter bellend (understatement) but in his haste to be seen as socially liberal Hmm he did not want to touch abortion. In fact and he and Osborne were publicly dismissive to Dorries via 'Calm down Dear' which has basically kicked her and her ilk into the long grass.

But now.. If there is a coalition with DUP/Tory the Tories will not be able to afford to challenge the prolifers in the mix on some of their most closely held ambitions.

The antichoicers play a long game because they think they have God on their side, they are not scared of repeated defeats in Parliament but relish the repeated airtime.

They know they will fail by draconian calls to ban all abortion etc or by appealing to religious voters only, but.. by chipping away at the edges over a long time they hope to shift the window of what is publicly acceptable and so get closer to dismantling legal NHS funded abortion access.

It is meant to be country before party

If only Sad

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 10:15

PerkingFaintly, it's not a 'race to the bottom' but quite frankly, if the UK is that abysmal for you then go. Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.

I love the UK and want the best for it. I don't care whether other people laugh at it. If people laughing at you/us makes such a difference to your life then perhaps you should be giving yourself a talking to. Have the courage of your convictions - or go, just go. You won't be missed.

I'm fed up of the whinging. The Referendum has been and gone and hand-wringing and arguing will achieve nothing. It's not a chatboard that's going to run the country it's the electorate, in whatever form that is, so how about going with a novel notion of accepting what's happened and finding ways to make it work. Not scaremongering and impotently blethering on about how gloomy it all is.
everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:15

People who have 'suffered' under immigration. Well these people may also be those who are seeing the NHS dismantled schools crumbling. Guess what using the one trick pony policy of immigration won't always work

It hasn't this time has it?

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 10:15

May should NEVER have called an election. Unless she is a total idiot it was pretty obvious that a lot of leave voters are NOT and probably never will be tory voters.

This.

How can someone who has shown such poor judgement run the country or Brexit negotiations I have no idea. But if she goes who the heck starts negotiations? More instability.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/06/2017 10:16

Precisely my fear Sad

"However the people who have suffered under immigration havent got enough that they can afford to compromise so will follow any party who offers an alternative no matter how extreme."

Did you mean the people who suffered under austerity?

Not sure how anyone in this country is actually suffering under immigration Confused.

Absolutely no chance. All you would need is about 5 conservative MPs to vote against it (and it would likely to be free vote anyway) and it won't get through.

And she isn't going to have time to piss about like that anyway. The foxes will also be safe I think...

TheElementsSong · 09/06/2017 10:17

Then when they didn't like the outcome of the vote they suddenly decide to use their right to vote.

How very dare they!!!! Angry

metspengler · 09/06/2017 10:17

There is no way the DUP could possibly swing those things Johnny, or indeed any serious reforms to English/Welsh rights. There are some jobs or concessions in NI they could demand, that would be more likely. Even so a coalition like the ConLib one is not the only option.

In another universe Sinn Fein might have been propping up Corbyn govt (not really possible for a couple of reasons) so the DUP doesn't seem so bad.

PerkingFaintly · 09/06/2017 10:18
