This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

Adelie - what makes you think this would happen: "There will have to be another election by the autumn."
Why? How?
If they are in power, albeit at a reduced strength, why would they call another election?

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 09:41

What the hell IS a hard Brexit?

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 09:42

Because war is a bigger problem than anyones personal politics. In this case There is no overarching unifying cause. Quite the opposite

Which is why a hung parliament will be so divisive

Sorry little sleep

Anyone who is pleased with this result is an idiot.

What a thoroughly stupid and unpleasant post. No more words of 'wisdom'? Thought not. Go away, do.

Thank fuck for PaulDacres and some of the other posters who've taken the time to post thought-provoking and sensible points of view.

The DUP are vile.

No one is disputing that. BUT they will be in parliament voting mainly with the conservatives regardless. Of course the conservatives are going to have to manage the relationship extremely carefully or they risk damaging their own support.

7461Mary18 · 09/06/2017 09:43

They will only have to be another election if they find day to day they cannot get any legislation passed but as Tories plus DUP are a majority - currently together 418 v 308 ( all the others) they should be fine. Not wasy but manageable.

WorshipTheGourd · 09/06/2017 09:44

I am happy there is not an outright Tory majority.

BUT... I think it makes Brexit negotiations harder.

The whole Brexit Qu is SO important - we need to have a Govt like in WW2 where the National Interest supercedes the ambitions of Cameron/May etc.

The whole world is laughing at us again Sad

QuiteUnfitBit · 09/06/2017 09:45

The DUP are vile
Maybe that is the something we can all unite around. Grin

The80sweregreat · 09/06/2017 09:45

I think that its history that tells us how unstable hung parliaments are - the whole idea of this election was for the Tories to have a huge majority to do as they pleased and wipe labour off the map.
it didnt happen as they wanted it to and May will suffer the backlash.
Her party will not be happy and will want blood after this - she really needs to watch her back, even if they let her limp on.
I will say it again, the Tories are utterly ruthless.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 09:46

I can see if you are a believer in a hard Brexit, then yes, this will feel very disappointing.

But for those who don't, its a tiny bit of light for the first time since last June.

7461Mary18 · 09/06/2017 09:47

...328 sorry... so a majority.

TheElementsSong · 09/06/2017 09:50

The DUP are vile

They are indeed vile.

But TM did not have to call this election. She gambled with all of us.

BorrowLove · 09/06/2017 09:50

@histinyhandsarefrozen - I don't believe in a harder Brexit.

This is disappointing to me. My local labour councillor has close ties with Putin (through family), my partner is currently severing on a peace keeping mission against Putin.

I am in pieces that people in our local community could vote for her.

I hope that's understandable to many people because it feels very weird to be me today.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 09:51

I'm personally not bothered by the way the rest of the world sees us. There's not a single country that is run perfectly and everybody is happy with. No country trades or co-operates with us because they like or respect us, it comes down to cold, hard cash at the end of the day...

So I really couldn't care if they think Great Britain is full of clowns, it's our circus, not theirs.

CheeseQueen · 09/06/2017 09:53

If you feel that way, then your ire should be directed at TM who decided to go to the polls rather than see out a safe three years that she had left to run. She kept saying she needed a mandate for Brexit negotiations; bollocks did she (and I voted Remain).

It is (and I voted Remain too.)
Why she pulled an election is beyond me, we didn't even need one yet!

Riversleep · 09/06/2017 09:53

Also Sinn fein don't sit, so really, they only need a couple more seats. They might decide to go it alone on that basis. They will get DUP votes without any type of deal. I just hope that there are fewer Tory MP's that are as hardline as the DUP than those who are more liberal on abortion, gay rights etc. Luckily David Burrowes has gone so that's one less.

user1480459555 · 09/06/2017 09:54

I think May was mad to call an election. I voted leave and did, originally, feel I would vote tory because of that despite having never voted tory in my life.

I decided though that as much as I want us to leave the EU there are other more important things such as our police and NHS which meant I just could not bring myself to vote for her. I also think their treatment of the disabled is disgusting.

Did she think all the leave voters would be blinkered enough to give her their vote? Also she obviously didn't think a lot of youngsters who couldn't be bothered to put their phones down and actually vote in the referendum would actually bother this time as obviously all the old/sad/racist/ignorant voters couldn't be trusted could we?

Vango · 09/06/2017 09:54

The DUP are vile

They are indeed vile.

So comforting to think that the Tories are probably trying to hammer out a deal with them as we type.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 09:57

The Tory party need to take a long look in the mirror. Bet they still can't see what so many others can

It is meant to be country before party

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 09:57

Its great that young people turned out to vote - 72% of them. Hopefully, we will see a shift in the system towards them.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 09/06/2017 09:58

Lyingwitchinthewardrobe I couldn't agree more. I find this idea that the rest of the world are perfect and are looking in at us in horror quite ridiculous. There is far far worse out there in the world than us Shock

My 418 above should have been 318 of course. It is now 319 Conservative. 326 is a majority - so 7 seats short. It will not be that hard for the Tories to continue in power in that case. 1 seat is still left to count
